Yup Roger, think it was still a straight knockout in that year. Barry was also runner-up in 1996/97 after it had changed to a 2-group round robin system. Barry was dependent on me beating Sean Taylor to propel him into the final and I duly obliged ! My other run in the competition was in 1983/84 when I made the semi-final. Bad memory there of my Littlehampton opponent barging me out of the way while I was on a 3k break with my one-up teetering on the edge. It dropped soon after.

Hi Tommo The year I had the shock result was 2000. I was the minnow drawn in the 'group of death'. I won my first. In my second I was behind after my break leg, but came back to win. I think my opponent went on to become world champion that year, something he repeated another 3 times. I know you were there because you were the first to congratulate me. All I had to do now was beat Van Guerwin for a place in the final. I went off with 5k and did not get another go over the 2 legs. He had done something similar to me in a previous COC. 2 weeks later I became a father, and have not played in anything other than Mid Sussex stuff since, although I might have a little outing this weekend.

Ok, you've successfully pinpointed it now.......you won the Mid Sussex Singles against Chris Ellmers in 1998/99 which qualified you to take part in the Sussex C-of-C competition in 1999/2000 - which Lloydy went on to win (against Alan Shaw) after you knocked Jim out. 4-timesChamp bounced back the following year to beat A.S. aka the Yorkshire Terrior, in the 2000/01 final. Like Barry, Gerry Smith was also twice runner-up for Mid Sussex. The competition provided the extra incentive to winning a League's singles title in the form of going on to represent said league against the others in the county: looking back at my own record of 10 singles finals in 4 different leagues, I see now that I underachieved, as I only managed to win three of them !

I played in 1995-6. Beat Mick Johnson (Billingshurst), then lost to Roy Taylor (Hastings) before being mullered by MVG. Played Ian "Bruce" Goulding (West Sussex) in my last match, who needed to beat me to qualify from the group. Much to MVG's delight I beat him, which put MVG through to then win it.

Yes, presumably you were Worthing champ that year.......van Guerwin went on to beat Eastbourne's Ian Street (doppelganger for Damon Allbarn) in the final.
My first recollection of the competition was going along with a contingent from Crawley in 1977 (I had just moved there and joined their League) and their champions pulled off a surprise double: Ken Brown won the Mens and Jackie Lewry the Ladies.

Two photos of the Sussex Ladies team who were the front-runners when the County Championships started in the 1970s........ The first one is around 1976/77 and the second one around 1979/80 - although Jean might know for definite. Names to faces, anyone ? Virginia Ifould, Sheila Pinner(O'Brien), Erica Malley, Ann Richards, Linda Turvey(Lennon), Jean Over(Brackenridge), Lyn Hibbard(Draper).

Correct, well done Neil. Ladies on extreme right and left in photo are Virginia Ifould and Lyn Draper.
You can now see many of the Worthing scorecards from that era by viewing my websites.
