Nigel, their seems to be a big difference now with the amount of ranking points players get for the County Championships since P.F was doing them. I haven't looked yet, but is the new points system set up on the All England site.?
These are the comparisons from 2006 to 2007.
2006 Jon Bamsey 19.7 Chris Reeves 18.6 Mark Turner 15.4 Steven Sheard 16.4 Tony Walsh 12.4
2007 Phil Collins 9.8 Paul Sainsbury 9.3 Mark Turner 8.8 Keith Sheard 4.8 Leon Beer 4.3
Are the Counties not so important anymore.?
Keith :(

Hi Keith
Yes the ranking points have been changed, if you have BBQ63 you will note that PF made a few changes, a major one was to the county champs.
Basically now you get 1pt for a win with the break, 1.5 pts for a win against the break, and 1 extra point if you win all your matches. So a maximum of 6pts are available. If more or less than 4 matches are played the points earned are adjusted accordingly. Also 2 points are deducted for div 2 players and 4 pts from Div 3 players.
However if a player loses more than they win they receive no points
In addition the top 7 player averages (across all divisions) are awarded points from 3.5 to 0.5.
Bonuses for scores over 8,000 apply as normal.
So for example, Phil Collins won all 4 matches giving him 6 pts, plus 3.5 for the top average, plus 0.3 score bonus giving 9.8pts
PF changed the points I think because some people felt too many were being awarded for what was effectively just 4 legs of billiards, as you can see from last year Jon Bamsey received 19.7pts which compared with just 10 for winning an open. The balance has been addressed now, with 15points for winning an open and Phil has taken 9.8 points for the best performance in the County last Sunday.
I think the change was definitely an improvement by PF. With regards to importance of the county champs it is still a major part of the ranking system with over 130 points being allocated across all players that participated (not yet including div 3) compared with the 60pts that are allocated to each open.
PS The ranking system in full is available on the All England Website

I am still of the opinion that the system still needs to be looked at again with a view to all competitions.

Agree Dave, I will be proposing at the AGM that a sub commitee be setup for rankings, therefore any changes can be agreed between several people. Also then basically anyone who wants a say can join the commitee.

Nigel,
You can count me in for that sub committee, if it is so wished. At this moment in time, I am not sure as to my attendance at this year's A.G.M.
