Taking the lead from Mid Sussex last season, a thread on which to document the exploits of Horsham League players taking part in County Opens.............
The first Open competition on the Circuit is Oxfordshire, and their XIXth was staged yesterday at Didcot Conservative Club - and Horsham have a hero already in Dun Horse's Ricky Dewdney who made it all the way to the Semi-Final before succumbling to the 2009 World Champion Phil Collins.
Receiving a first round 'Bye', Ricky then beat Oxford's Paul Butcher in round two and then Mill House player Clive Thompson in round three. In Round Four he breezed past current England player Mark Brewster of Kent, and in the Quarter-Final outplayed another International player from Kent, Curt Driver. The competition was eventually won by British Number 5 Steven Sheard.
Others taking part from Horsham were Roffey SSC's Gareth Lloyd (who made the Last 32), Plough B's Dave Ingram (last 16 of the Plate) and Mill House's Margaret Thompson (who encountered Sheard in the 1st Round and was pleased to make1000 in each game!)
For his efforts, Dewdney received a smart Trophy as well as a cheque for £30.

Thanks Tommo for the write up. I had a great day of Billiards and good support. The £30 was not in my pocket for long with me, Nigel and Lloydy having a great curry on the way home.
Thanks rik

Sounds like a sound investment to me, Rik, you've subscribed to a good 'curry club' there, especially with Richard also a member (although he missed out this time). ;)

Plough B player Jim Greensted added a nice trophy to his collection (he already holds the All-England Team championship with his Thursday night collegues New Sussex Hotel) when he reached the Quarter-Final of the Kent Classic (Open) held yesterday at Tonbridge. Clive Thompson (Mill House) reached the last 16 before losing to eventual winner Tony Woolvin of Hants. Lorraine Hall (Mill House) received a nice glassware trophy for being Furthest Lady in the competition.

Congratulations to Ricky Dewdney of the Dun Horse on the magnificent achievement of reaching his first 'Open' final in the Buckinghamshire Open, held at Princes Risborough Golf Club on Sunday 7th August.
Having earlier put out England International Paul Sainsbury in Round Two, Ricky breezed through to the last 16 stage, where he took revenge on Jim Greensted (Plough B) who had just beaten his dad Dick.
Ernie Jordan (Bucks) was his next victim, and then Ricky overcame the stern test of England No.5 Keith Sheard in the Semi. Multiple Open-winner Kevin Tunstall of Worthing was just too strong in the Final.
Still, already a semi-finalist this year in the 2011 Oxon , and now a runner-up: it must be only a matter of time before Ricky lifts his first Open title.

I've just spotted that there's a good writeup - including a photo of Ricky holding his trophy - on Page 39 of last week's West Sussex County Times. ;)

Congratulations to Ricky Dewdney on making the England Team for the upcoming internationals :) and a mention for Dave Ingram too as a reserve ;)
This will be the England team to play against Jersey and Guernsey next year. The venue will again be the Ardington Hotel in Worthing on February 4th. The Guernsey match (9 a side) next year will be Away and on the same weekend as the Guernsey Open, so book early to get the cheap flights.

Some good performances from Horsham League players in this year’s Sussex Open (played on Sunday 10th June at the Roffey Social & Sports Club):
Richard Jeffrey (Dun Horse) beat Horsham man-of-the-moment Jim Greensted (Roffey B) in Round Two, and Bob Hall (Roffey B) beat two England players Chris Reeves (Brighton) and Pete Sainsbury (Tunbridge Wells) – before both Richard and Bob were accounted for by Worthing’s Roger Taylor, at the last 32 and last 16 stage respectively. Pete Edwards (Roffey B) beat Oxford star Tony Martin and Steve Eely (Windmill B) to make the last 32 before losing to Berkshire’s Geoff Pitt – who had earlier defeated Lorraine Hall (Roffey B) in the First Round. Lorraine however had a great run in the Plate, beating Ros Appleby (Dun Horse) and then Tony Martin, followed by Dave Hampton (Littlehampton) and then her England captain Pauline Withey in the quarter-final before falling to eventual winner Gareth Lloyd in the Semi.
Ding Johnson (Limeburners) had a great result in eliminating Brighton’s Alan Brackenridge in Round Two – scoring 7670 in her break game – but Medway’s Gerry Fitzjohn accounted for her at the Last 32 stage.
Micky Fairs (Roffey Y) displayed some of his talent with an aggregate of 40,000 points in four legs when overcoming Brighton’s Bella Stoner and Redhill’s Frank Doyle - but found newly-crowned Sussex Master Mark James too strong in the Last 32.
Dave Ingram (Mill House) is usually tipped to do well in these events and this occasion was no exception as he breezed through the first three rounds against Chris Newson (Hants), Gary Powell (Surrey) and Ric Cunningham (Worthing). Here, though, his progress was halted at the last 16 stage by strong lady player Jean Brackenridge (Brighton).
Horsham Master and Singles champ Jim Greensted, having lost to Jock, had a good run in the Plate, a first round Bye being followed by a win over Hastings’ Phil Osbourne before defeat by Chris Reeves in the last 16.
Gareth however bounced back from a first round reversal at the hands of Hampshire’s Barry Radford by lifting the Plate with wins over (Rd 1) Darrell Skinner; (Rd 2) Chris Turner; (Rd 3) Denise Wills; (Qr Final) Bella Stoner; (Semifinal) Lorraine Hall and (Final) Paul Sainsbury (Berkshire and England).

Jim Greensted (Roffey B) improved on his last year's quarter-final appearance in the Kent Classic, making the Semi-Final in this year's competition held yesterday at the 6-in-1 Club at Tonbridge.
Having confined Kent's Martin Leach to the Plate competition (he went on to become runner-up), Jim then beat Surrey's Richard Plaw in the second round and Eastbourne's Chris Haggar in Round Three. In the Quarter-Final Oxford's Ian Gordon provided a stern test and Jim proved he was up to the challenge: Ian made a complete table playout for 14k in the first leg and most of us had written off Jim's chances as he only opened with 3k on his break game. But a second chance materialised and this time there was no mistake with Jim racking up a further 12k - leaving his young opponent the impossible task of 600 to make up with the bar - and red ball - gone.
Jim's first semi-final of an Open proved to be a culture shock as England regular Paul Sainsbury played out the first leg with 20,000 meaning Jim had to do the same. At his first miss Jim was obliged to concede and Paul went on to win the Final as well (against current World Champion Kevin Tunstall). Jim however received a nice trophy and cash prize for his efforts.
Colleen Park (Mill House) had a tremendous run in the Plate Competition, reaching the Quarter-final before losing to the eventual winner, Oxford's Tony Martin. She had earlier defeated Sussex Under-30 champ Mike Daw, strong Surrey player Tony Cross - and Eastbourne's Chris Turner in an exciting last-ball victory.

The AEBBA Special Ladies Competition took place on the same day and was won by Oxford’s Pauline Withey from Surrey’s Denise Wills. With apologies for it being a little late, extracted from website: 25 Feb 2013 Hastings won a very competitive Division 2 One Day Inter League competition at the Hurst Club on Sunday 24th February finishing just 1 point ahead of Horsham in an exciting end to the day. After 4 of the 5 matches there were only 3 points separating all 6 teams in the competition but a 4-3 win over West Sussex in the last series sealed promotion to Division 1 for Hastings next season. Colin Southouse (Eastbourne) was the only unbeaten player on the day while Mike Daw (Hastings) hit the highest score of the day (12,050) in one of his 4 wins and Dave Howlett, Adam Kuzimski, Keith Newman (all Horsham), Lee Sunshine (Eastbourne), Rick Dewdney and Ding Johnson (Billingshurst), Gary Evans and Kevin Charlton (both West Sussex), Sandy Harmer and Dave White (both Hastings) and Chase Newman (Lewes) also winning 4 matches out of 5 on the day. – Dave Ingram, SCBBA A new star for Horsham has been found in Stuart Carruthers who during the course of the day recorded a personal best score of 8010. The same can be said for Dave Howlett's 11,110 made against West-Sussex. Full details of the event can be found on the SCBBA website: www.sussexbarbilliards.com/Sussex/1%20day%20cups/2013/Division%202%202013.htm.....and....... 16 March 2013 The AEBBA British Pairs Championships were played at the Queens Hotel in Bournemouth over the weekend of 9th-10th March and was won by Brighton pairing Nigel Senior and Richard Wooton who beat Steven Sheard (Oxon) and Pete Phillips (Kent) 3-1 in the final. Steven and Pete had beaten Henry Brooks and Dave Ingram in the semi-final on aggregate, despite Dave joining the Sussex 20k Club with a personal best table play-out of 21,760 in the final leg to fall just short of the 24k target, while our own Ros Appleby and Ron Sheridan (Dun Horse A) were amongst the prizes, reaching the last 16.

A big well done to Clive Thompson from the Mill House for reaching the Final of the Norwich 4-Pin Open today, which included a win over world number 1 Kevin Tunstall in the semi-final before losing to Curt Driver in the Final. 8-)
It was a fitting reward for Clive perhaps in view of all the promotion and publicity that he had given this new event, he must have been doing a bit of practice as well.... ;D

4 pin might be making us better players tommo !!! I think that the 3 pin players went further....!! Both the Winner (Mark) and the Runner-up (Keith) turn their hand to 4-Pin, Dave. Plus the Plate Winner (Simon). All were at Norwich. To answer Gandalf, seriously, yes, practicing 4-Pin does no harm whatsoever. I had a good season in both Horsham and Billingshurst last year and I'm sure it was down to playing 4-Pin and the extra degree of accuracy some of the shots require.

Point taken Tommo.... although I doubt that any of the 3 players that you have named would credit playing in the 4-pin Open as part of the reason for their success at the weekend.... .... I agree that any form of practice can only improve your game, however the skills required to be successful in the two formats are as different as chalk and cheese IMHO. Although you won't find me playing 4-pin anytime soon, I hope that the enthusiasm for the game will continue and there will be another 4-pin Open run by East Anglia again next year as anything that means that more people will play the game has to be encouraged. Apologies to Horsham's Heroes for taking this thread totally

Just to add that Curt Driver won the 4-Pin Open and then went straight on to win the very next 3-Pin Open (Surrey). Coincidence maybe ? Probably yes, as he was already that good !
