HDBBL When we played the Windmill B the other night, Steve Eely donated a framed lamentation poem written by the Partridge team immediately following the 1986/87 Team Cup Final which they had lost to the Three Bees. It's hilarious, but definitely an 'under the counter' item. ;)

Please see extract from Minutes from our EGM outlining our proposals for the Celebrations.
Mr Giffen outlined the arrangements for an ‘open day’ on Sunday 26th June at Roffey Social and Sports Club. On the day, all current and any players that have had an involvement with Horsham Bar Billiards EVER were invited to come along and talk about the good old days and have a drink or two. Anyone with old photos of Finals Nights, or press cuttings or old anecdotes would be more than welcome to share them on the day. A buffet would be provided if the numbers in attendance justified it. Moreover, plans were afoot for a 3-way challenge match along One-Day Interleague lines, and Mr Thompson had been tasked with providing a format for this, which he had done, allowing for an 11.30am start and finishing at 7pm with the Presentation and a Raffle.
The Jubilee Day would now be further publicised along with the Masters (1st May) and Finals Night (3rd May) by means of a poster, and word of mouth from members would be very much relied on too. The format for the challenge match was not fully finalised at this stage, but the principles already agreed were for : a) teams of 6 (the President’s Select; the Chairman’s Select; and an Under 30’s team headed up by Adam Bateup.); b) held on 2 tables – for which Mr Giffen would be seeking sponsors; c) each player in the team of 6 playing 4 times, with a maximum time to wait between rounds of no more than around an hour. d) Some flexibility – one team could consist of up to 12 players if required, with each playing twice. e) Jubilee medals have already been struck, and to be awarded to everyone taking part.

Just to add on the subject of the 3-way challenge match on Sun 26th June............
Due to some constraints put on us over the arrival time of the tables, teams will now be of 5 rather than 6 and it will be a 12.30 for 12.45 start. All players in a team of 5 will get to play four frames, but a team could accommodate say, 10 players rather than 5 with the players playing twice.
Either way, there shouldn't be a gap of more than an hour between playing, according to the schedule worked out.
The canvassing now starts for volunteers to make up these teams, and some have already come forward!
It will be interesting to see what sort of team of past players our new President, Rod can come up with !

I distributed some posters tonight amongst the Horsham interleague team: Vernon, John Slee, Peter Gibbs, John Miller and Gareth Lloyd are all interested.
Ricky Dewdney and Adam K are both interested in playing for the 'younger side' although both just the wrong side of 30.

Now that the Masters & Finals are out the way its tlme to turn our attention to our other big event so I'm renewing my plea for any information or photos we can use on the day. Bernie did you find those ones from the ymca.
Please spread the word as we want this to be a great social gathering & bring together people that have played in HDBBL over the years.

Serendipity.......................was searching for something else and I came across a vital piece of the League's history, which I should have handed over in 1992 but am glad I didn't.
It's a discarded plinth, with engraving for all the League Div One winners since the League started, up to 1982 when the magnificent wooden shield was commissioned and presented annually thereafter.
There is no cup to go with it, as I recall that at the time the cup itself was used to upgrade another competition (the Ladies Doubles Runners-up I believe, which was the size of an egg-cup !)
Anyway, the hitherto-missing early years' winners have now been added to the Hall of Fame page on the website, and the records show that the Horse and Groom won the Horsham League for each of the first five seasons.
I will give the band a good polish, and hand the item over on Sunday at our Jubilee event.

Rod Tarratt has just phoned me and confirmed that he has now done all he can to raise his team for Sunday. Some are 'probables' rather than 'definites' so in a worst case scenario he may need to 'borrow' a player on the day. But this is very promising, and he is looking forward to it.
So, President's team sorted: one down and two to go. ;)

Good news, I reckon that the teams will comprise the following numbers:
President's ............10 players (after some arm-twisting) Chairman's ............ 10 players Under 30's (-ish) .......5 players.
Suggested rules for the competition:
1. A 'round robin' of matches, meaning that there are 6 matches in all. 2. Captains to make random draw beforehand on a scorecard, each being responsible for 2 scorecards. 3. Substitutes are allowed. 4. Level beaks in all games. 5. A maximum break of 5,000 (if you go over, one legal shot needed to hold score.)

It was indeed an excellent day with many highlights, and I would like to thank Ian and Sparky (and any others) for their hard work in preparation for making our Jubilee Day a meaningful event.
Surprise attendees were: Ray and Margaret King; Pete and Glenda Wickersham; Elsie (Vizor) and Fred Fuller; John and Angie Thayre; Sue Loughran; Judy Munnoch; Ian King from the Railway; former AEBBA Champ Mike Hinton.
Sparky gave a nice speech to the memory of Ron Child; Ian had produced a cortege of photos and clippings of past events and achievements going back over the years; The 3-way match ran to schedule, and provided a good mix of serious and not-so-serious play; Many thanks to John Miller for arranging - and paying for the food - empty trays at the end of the day are always good to see.
The highlights for me were: Seeing Mike Hinton's scrapbook/album full of goodies including many photos of the Sussex team of the early 1970's; Seeing Rod Tarratt play again, he still has the art and scored an impressive 8k in one frame; Group photos were taken of the 3 teams, and also an assembly of past Mens Singles Champions of the last 30 years. .......and we had a 'shot of the day': Lloydy, faced with a ball smack bang in front of a peg, cut it finely, the ball then set off down the table and came back to drop in perfectly for 400 points !
Fabulous event, will put the match scores up tomorrow.

Sounds good and certainly a pleasure to see Mick Hinton attending a few events, always the total gentleman. it is good to celebrate this great games and remember the characters we have all encountered, also to catch up with how things are going for those who have moved on.

Match scorecards as promised, accessible via this link: www.horshambarbilliards.co.uk/page1.htmlThough no amount of arm-twisting could persuade Mike Hinton or John Thayre to delight us with their skills :'( it was good to see Pete Wickersham and Ray King play their first games for more than 30 years, and President Rod was really up for it, winning three out of his four games, his only loss being to victorious Chairman Sparky ! The photos to follow from Ian Giffen, hopefully. 8-) - now added, with reports and captions - tommo

Thanks Tommo, and IanG, for the info and recollections as it is good to hear that others enjoyed the day too.
Folks when viewing the scores remember the 5k maximum allowed break rule, wasn't always needed but did see the odd 'awkward leave' complete with friendly chuckle or wry smile, as you would expect.............not sure how much was 'over cautious' play, not used to a deliberate short ball from the break ;D ;D ;D
