But I have a set of final averages from around ten years ago from the Mid Sussex League which show the record of a certain R Wooton from the Brewers Arms (Burgess Hill). It doesn't make very impressive reading though, and was probably some young whippersnapper just starting out in the game. ;)

Ah yes but i did start out in Lewes. I started playing when I was nearly 15 so 13 years ago, I think i played one year in Mid sussex, I think to make up the numbers, did I play a whole season or just a few games?
The only players I can remember was Trevor Greenyer and Ted Stringer.
Where did you get the stats from it would be good to see, are they on a web site somewhere ?
Were you playing at the same time ?

Hi Richard, 'Kinell, started at fourteen ? Why, if you're still playing at my age you'll be entering your 43rd season !
Trevor and Ted still play M-S : Trevor plays for the Watermill and Ted for Clayton & Keymer RBL.
Sorry to 'out' you like this. Yes I have a full list of averages from that year, I'll dig it out when I get home and post the results. It's only a hard copy though as electronic records do not date back that far. Prepare to be really embarrassed ! Allowances obviously to be made though for your tender years. I seem to remember a young girl playing at that time too who was quite good - the landlord's daughter, maybe ?
On to some quotes from the other thread which I didn't have a chance to comment on earlier :
RW : Maybe a way around it would be to make Worthing like Brighton, the premier teams to give away all five breaks against div 1 teams . Good thinking. Do you think they'll buy it ?
RW : It took a lot of persuasion to get Gareth to play bar billiards again as he took a year out because he lost interest, I am glad he did not pack it in all together. He has always been a great player but he is now even better as his past results show. Yes I remember he got fed up and started playing football for Barns Green. But he loves the game and will always come back to it.
RW: I think it is great to still have lots of leagues and teams, Myself, Nigel and Marcus do as much as we can to promote new teams, we got a new team set up at the Brewery tap last year and two new teams at the duke of wellington this year. Very commendable, we need more like you and I'm sure that KT will be regenerating some extra interest out Lancing way !

I think one R Wooton is enough for all of us thank you Tommo! ;)
Come on, embarass him lets see the stats of his first season, i will show you mine if you show me his ::)
With regards to Worthing Premier sides giving all the breaks away - would love to see it but don't think it will happen.

Richard as you know I remembered you from my first season, assume I must have noticed your potential ;D
My records started 1996/97 when you were 47th in league played 13 (out of 22 max), Won 6, lost 7, highest score 7080, average 2598, and if that was your first season then I take my hat off to you but I seem to think you were a bit older than 14 then ;D
Interestingly MSBBL was much stronger then with ten players with 10k+ high scores that year, Jim Broderick (No1), Iain Graves, Mick Holmwood, Graham Lewis, John Turner, Chris Ellmers, Clive Thompson :o, Mick Roberts, Philip Standing, Alan Downes, and some notable near misses so your record stands up well.
From what I can see that must have been your last year in MSBBL.

Hi Richard,
It's a bit cringeworthy, but you asked for it, so here goes : In the season 1996/97, Mid Sussex league, record for Mr R.Wooton (Brewers Arms) P13 W6 L7 Average 2598. Other teammates: A.Farmer-Wright; T.Greenyer; E.Stringer; D.Randall. You had your moment one particular night, though, with a top score of 7080. In the same year the Mens singles was won by Graham Lewis (Ted's brother-in-law) -formerly of Hastings and now of Worthing. Player of the year was Jim Broderick who claims to have learned his billiards in Brighton under the tuition of Harry Leeson.
In the same year also....... (Press releases) All-conquering bar billiard team Windmill 'Z' swept the board of honours at MidSussex Finals Night. The wizards from Gossops Green collected the treble with the Premier League title, Team Knockout Cup and (handicap) Charity League. The latter two competitions were won on the night. The latest League title completes an unbroken stint of six championships since the side transferred from its former Queens Head base in Bolney, to Crawley in 1992. At one stage during the season the Z's recorded an amazing seven 5-0 victories on the spin. But all good things must come to an end. The Z's are set to change Leagues next season in order to give the rest a chance. This should be good news for Windmill's 'A' team, who finished in the runners-up spot.
And....... It is official - Windmill 'Z' are the best bar billiards team in Sussex. They beat Foresters 'B' from Horsham, who were the champions of the Billingshurst League, having first eliminated champions of Worthing and Littlehampton. The victory came in the Sussex Champion-of-League-Champions Cup Final played over two legs with a 7-3 scoreline. Match one (played at Crawley) Home first: Mick Holmwood beat Peter Gibbs 10460-1510; Clive Thompson beat Sue Loughran 4180-2020; John Turner lost to John Slee 2410-3420; Nick Hayes beat Gareth Lloyd 3130-2830; Barry Timson beat Peter Wren 5010-2120.(Windmill Z 4, Foresters B 1) Match two (played at Horsham) Home first: Sue Loughran lost to Barry Timson 1110-1220;Gareth Lloyd lost to Nick Hayes 2240-3980; Peter Wren lost to John Turner 0-6790; John Slee beat Clive Thompson 14080-660 (ego trip - moi ?); Peter Gibbs beat Mick Holmwood 3240-920. (Foresters B 2, Windmill Z 3) This means that Windmill Z -who have won every team event in which they have taken part this season - will be invited to represent Sussex in the annual Southern Counties Bar Billiards Championships next spring. On Tuesday, the same players plus captain Mick Wright won the Horsham Festival Cup as the Black Dog - the team's new home venue. In the Final they beat Foresters A 3-2 in a closely- contested match.
To spare Lloydy's blushes................ Yes he was even good in those days : "Rising star Lloyd frankly too hot" The Mens Singles final of the Horsham & District Bar Billiards League saw young superstar Gareth Lloyd (Rising Sun) up against the experience of former All-England Champion Tony Franks. The quality of play never let the billing down: Lloyd made an excellent opening break of 10,000 to take the first frame, but Franks levelled the match with a 7,000 late in the second leg. The all-important toss in the decider went to Lloyd and his opening break of 14,000 was enough to take the match.
Ah ! the good old days ! ;D Cheers,
tommo

Nice info there tommo/sparky, poor old Richard ;) Thanks Kevin and I think Richard can stand those stats, as they are fairly good in those days considering that 44 out of the 46 players above him had played more games ( mostly 19-22 range) and amongst the players behind him were 14 or so who also had played more games. He was about 29th for High Score and about 37th for average, both of which include some reserve players who only played one or two games so tend to upset the stats a little. But Nigel/Tommo I have to agree there is only one Richard Wooton...... 8-)

Nah, it wasn't his first season and his record was crap. ;) Richard would be the first one to admit it. ;D He took a whole season to score what he now scores in two games. Let's see if Nigel can admit to something more embarrassing about himself, as promised. My own first-ever league game was a baptism of fire, just 580 against 6000 stuffed past me by Oscar Jobbins (father of Paul, Pete and Phil). Mind you, he was the landlord - and playing on his own table.

Well my first ever league game (1996) for the Queen Victoria B was against the drunk landlord of the Toby who had come to play the last game for his team (Brighton League Division 3). Although barely able to stand he knocked in 3k and I scored 220.
I was promptly dropped for the next match.
My full record for that season was P25 W17 L8 Ave 3,203 Highest Score 8,620.

Continuing the current theme, my first season was 2002/03 in Brighton Division 3 for the Windmill C.
From Nigel's excellent brighton website i've found that my performance for the season was:
P14 W12 L2 Average 5,819 High Score 11,150 Not bad! :)

Impressive, Feed the Goat, very impressive.
But consulting the aforementioned excellent brighton bar billiards website you too suffered the debut curse that befell me. A loss to T.Martin (who?) from the Kendal by a slim 70 points. Yes it was close, but I will embarass you by saying that you scored 1,890.
Ok i know that is more than 220 :P
However we are both in the priveliged position in that our first ever games are recent enough that we can remember them :D

However we are both in the priveliged position in that our first ever games are recent enough that we can remember them :D This is good fun lads, jibes at others, with a healthy measure of self-deprecation. Although I started playing league billiards whilst still a teenager, it was not until my seventh season that I got a five-figure league score, 12,560 at Ye Olde Six Bells, Billingshurst. I then had to wait a further 25 years (until 1999/2000) to beat it ! '74/'75 was a good year : Horsham A beat Brighton A 5-2 in the Interleague final, held at the Sussex Sports centre (and had to wait another 10 years to repeat the feat against Littlehampton. Also in 74/75 my teammate Chris Lewry (he emigrated to Australia in 1978) went through the card, played 22, won 22, lost 0. His last two games were quite funny. Penultimate game he was well behind with all the balls on the table and the bar due. So he gave it a thrash, Feed-the-goat-style, got them back in a couple of shots and played it out to win. The last game he was playing the slowest player you'd ever seen, an old boy with a pipe from the White Lion, Thakeham. Chris was shaking like a leaf the whole game and, fighting his way through the smoke, managed to win with just over a thousand.

Hi Richard, Makes me feel old when I can remember Cliff Richard bursting on to the pop scene as a 19-year old, and Dick Dewdney (Rik's dad) practising in the Horse and Groom as a 13-year old: he was known as "Young Richard" then.
Anyway, tommo's first seasons stats :
(Horsham league - Sunallon Club) 1968/69 P22 W10 L12 Ave 1735 HS 3220
(Billingshurst league - Six Bells B) 1970/71 P25 W19 L6 Ave 2261 HS 4500
(Crawley league - Brewery Shades C) 1977/78 P26 W20 L6 Ave 3060 HS 7650
(Mid Sussex league - Victory B) 1981/82 P22 W16 L6 Ave 3509 HS 6320
(Redhill league - Black Dog) 1998/99 P15 W10 L5 Ave 3364 HS 6690
Not much in the way of average scores, but I always look to win around 70% of my league games.

I cant remember the stats, but I remember well enough my 1st league season.
It would be around 1978/9 in Mid Sussex playing for the Victory in Staplefield (dont know if we were the A, B, or Z (or even Q) but I do remember that I felt as though I'd played really well if I scored over 1000 in a game.....
I also remember that I knew nothing about finals nights in those days, we didnt qualify for anything so our captain didnt tell us.
Only did maybe 2 seasons then gave up until 2000 when I made a comeback.
Over to Tommo to look into his book and tell everyone what my stats really were.

Welcome back Captain Oates.
Re : the Victory, you must have been the A team, the B team was formed round about that time when the League Champions (which included Tony Franks !) transferred there from the Rose and Crown, Cuckfield. Peter Wren persuaded me to join in 1981, I think to replace Franksey (a rather inadequate replacement if I may say so !)
LMAO about your captain (Tim Newnham) not letting you in about Finals Night and keeping it a secret ! Year after year the little so-and-so used to cadge a lift there with our team ! ;D

So where's my stats???? Dont tell me that your book of knowledge doesnt include MY first season? Hi Bernie, You really want to know what happened in the first season that you played - 1978/79 ? You may live to regret this... Well unfortunately my records don't touch upon the Mid Sussex, as I was extremely busy playing in three (!) other leagues, as well as captaining Horsham A at Interleague. Anyway, it turned out to be quite an eventful season : We (Michell 'B') were Second Division champions of Billingshurst - Dick Dewdney played in my team. Runners-up were the Rising Sun - no not the Horsham one (nor indeed Le Soleil Levant of St Helier) - this one hailed from a little-known place called Nutbourne. Our 'A' team were runners-up in the top division to the Mucky Duck. In the Horsham League my team the Railway (B'hurst) finished third behind champions the Bell 'A' and runners-up the White Hart, Cranleigh. But we went on to win the Team Cup, triumphing over the White Hart 3-2 in the Final. We (the Brewery Shades) retained the Crawley League championship following a merger of the 'C' and 'B' teams under Barry Timson's captaincy. Runners-up were Crawley Club. Margaret and I got to the Mixed Doubles Final but lost to Peter Gibbs and Sheila Wootton. I also lost in two Mens Doubles finals with different Andy's - Andy Finn in the Crawley and Andy Gilbert in the Horsham. John Turner knocked me out of the Crawley Singles ???and John Slee knocked us out of the Horsham Mixed Doubles - we gave him a lift to and from the pub (the same thing happened the following year) >:(. Slee won the Horsham Singles title, Don Fairs (Mickey's dad) was runner-up. We entered all the Sussex competitions in those days, and were invariably sent down to the coast for our trouble :o: I lost to Vic Ryan (Littlehampton) in the Singles at the Oving Club; to Brian Richards and R.White (Worthing) in the Mens Pairs at the Albion, Brighton, and in the Mixed Doubles to J & J Hayward of the Oving Club at the Crabtree, Lancing. In the All-England (Open) the Brewery Shades beat the Royal Coach, Shoreham but then lost 2-3 to the Mile Oak, Portslade. In the Watney Mann we lost over two legs to the Beach Hotel, Littlehampton - beat 'em 3-2 at home, but lost 0-5 away on a Frank Sumner-prepared table - unsurprisingly ! ::) In the Interleague Competition Horsham A were group runners-up to Brighton A but failed to qualify for the Final. Mick Holmwood was our best player with six wins out of seven and an average of 5500. Well, you did ask !!!
