Mmmmm...like you Nige I find it strange that/if Surrey selection was purely on the results of one day.

Well, Nigel, you sound shocked, but it's not too radical an idea if you think about it. ;) To "qualify" you have to be first or second in a group of four. Anyone that good usually makes it. But of course it can go wrong if, when the draw is made at the start of the day, there is a weak group and a "group of death": That's what happened to me - Jason Wadsworth finished fourth in my group and he's just had a last-16 finish at Bucks. 8-)
But you're right, it's not absolutely set in stone, so what I said was only 87.5% God's truth. :-[ Tony Cross was one of the best eight on the day and will only be in the 'B' as it's his first time for Surrey for several years. We've a rather lop-sided spectrum of playing ability in Surrey - there are very many players in the lower divisions who just play for fun and have no aspirations to play in the premier div, and then most of the premier div players who have had a crack at county level at some stage - with virtually nothing in between. So it doesn't really matter who makes up the County teams - the players all have the required experience - but the Invitational County Singles is a good way of getting all the candidates together in a form of trials, and getting a commitment out of the players.
Believe it or not there are parallels with Sussex in that a) Sussex used to hold "trial" matches (I remember John Slee cursing his luck when he lost to a 'local' player at the Green Dragon once which blew his chance for selection); and b) You have Terry Race and Jim who could step in at a moments notice if invited: Similarly we have Simon Tinto and Terry Oakley.

They are not similar at all....... Honestly, Pete, I was using a similie, ie a comparison of one situation with another, not claiming a similarity in the players. ::) You must learn not to take things too literally. :)

I never take things literally (?) It was just my poor attempt at humour. Unusual for me, I know. But one last thing, you were using a "simile", or was it a smilie simile?
Better move on....

you were using a "simile", or was it a smilie simile? Nice one Pete. Quite often I think I'm using a soliloquy. ;D

As "Frasier Crane" used to say "I'm listening" even if you are talking to yourself.
But congratulations Clive: you are probably the first person EVER to .......
congratulate me on my sense of humour...
You too must be perverted, or do I mean"perverse".. you work it out.

Pete just to point out there has never been a problem with your sense of humour or anyone elses for that matter, the problem comes from members having to 'guess' when you are joking, this is where members take offence. As can clearly be seen on the forum, the Northants boys get OTT but you can tell from their use of smilies and small fun images they use that it is meant as a joke, or when they are angry they have an angry smiley. They are posting things that are more OTT then you do in many cases but allowed because it is clear it is not insulting but fun to them all. I and all admins are in total agreement to these actions, you may believe you were singled out but that was not the case, you are a victim of your own actions in not emphasising with the use of smileys, nothing more. Personally I dont want to modify any posts on any forum, we all want fun mixed in with serious debates too, this is the only major forum for BB and will get bigger.

Just to meekly point out that Glenn's assurance that I do not have to use smileys unless I want to was one of the reasons that I am back on the forum.
Whether that is permanent or temporary is still to be decided.... ::)
Please allow me not to comment on what is posted on the Northants threads. It is nothing to do with me.

I will point out that it is Glenn's board, however, I nor any other mod that I am aware of have not been given any special instructions to this effect, I will continue to admin to our agreed methods that all staff have agreed to.
