Redhill League are pleased to announce……………..
.........that the first- ever Surrey Open is now a ‘goer’. 8-)
We have a date (arrived at following discussions with other emissaries such as Sir KT – hope he won’t mind me saying so) – but of course this is provisional to being able to reserve tables with Brian Daniels for the appropriate weekend.
We have a good venue which is able to supply food throughout the day, and if the sun shines on us there will be an outdoors barbecue. :P
There will be parking for 60 to 70 vehicles.
The standard fee for entry to the tournament will apply, and Surrey being central for most counties, we are looking for a line-up of around 96 players.
An official approach will be made to the AEBBA to seek their endorsement of the event as an additional one on their calendar, and for it to be classed as a ranking event.
So here are the details which I have been given permission to leak to the Forum.
Date: Sunday 10th May 2009 Venue: St Nicholas’s School, Taynton Drive, Merstham, Surrey.
Once we have had the event officially sanctioned, an entry form will be displayed on the Redhill – and hopefully the AEBBA – websites early next year.
*****Should have added, of course there will be a bar - so no danger of any raging thirsts going unquenched on the day********

Tommo, that's great news and I hope that the AEBBA will sanction the event...... ;D ;D My one concern is over the date, which would be very close to the Guernsey Open assuming that they run their Tournament at the same time next year.....?? ??? Hopefully, the organisers from both Redhill (Surrey) and Guernsey will be able to arrange that the events don't fall on the same weekend, which would probably weaken the field of entrants at both events...... :( ::)

Hopefully, the organisers from both Redhill (Surrey) and Guernsey will be able to arrange that the events don't fall on the same weekend, which would probably weaken the field of entrants at both events...... :( ::) Deciding the date has been discussed long and hard and has not been arrived at in an arbitrary fashion, Dave. This event has already been in the planning for over a year. There are very many variables to consider as certain months have to be avoided for peoples' holidays. Assuming Guernsey will be held each year around May Bank Holiday time, it's close, yes, but there will be no clash. If I do have a concern, it's over Kent Finals which unfortunately coincide with Guernsey, meaning some top-class players like Sav and the Rooster won't be able to do both. But at least by announcing our intentions now, everyone has time to make contingency arrangements. We have bounced the date off both the Brighton lot and Worthing, and there has been an enormous amount of enthusiasm. Being more or less central to the bar billiards world, I think the Surrey Open will be well-supported, and when the time comes we may well have to restrict entry to 'first come first served'.

It wasn't meant as a criticism Tommo, merely an observation, and I'm sure that a lot of planning has been put into it. 8-)
I think that it is fantastic that you can put in the date now which hopefully gives the opportunity for Guernsey & Kent to plan their dates around this to ensure that everybody who wants to enter these competition will be able to...... in addition to Surrey ;)
I'm sure that it will be VERY well supported and that a number of Mid-Sussex players (including myself) would also go in for it as well as Brighton, Worthing and other parts of the country...!! ;D

Re KBBA and our traditional May Bank Holiday Bar Billiards, Beer and Butties Binge, there will be major changes in deepest darkest Kent this year. It is unlikely that KBBA interleagues, if they still exist, will be on the May Bank Holiday weekend as KBBA will have to fit into a vacant slot on Brian Daniel's calendar for table hire. Whether we can then afford table hire is another issue.

I hope it will not be seen as me rocking the boat to mention Northants - there was talk of them resurrecting their fine Open (the last time they staged it was back in the nineties and I remember driving a party up there which included a Lloydy of very tender years ! ;) However it has all gone a bit quiet but next year we might see a full calendar with Northants added to Guernsey and Surrey. Plenty of opportunity there to earn those coveted British Ranking Points ! ;)

Agree totally Tommo the more we promote the game via opens the better, and sure with advanced planning even us poor old shift workers can arrange our calender around the dates.
Would love to have been coming to Guernsey, but with other things going on it is just a bit to far to be away at the moment. Really hoping things will fall into place so that I can make my first Jersey this year.

This is great news Tommo, well done for getting this off the ground.
Unfortunately, this may cause a problem with Oxfordshire based players as the 2nd weekend in May is always the Wallingford Finals night and Oxfordshire County Singles weekend (would have thought KT would have remembered!)

While that's regrettable Mark, I should point out that I'm not on the organising committee for the event, and am just acting as a spokesman.
I can however relay messages back to the committee and have already done so regarding the necessity of booking tables without delay - and also your above comments (after you spoke to me in Guernsey).
Please bear in mind, though, that considerable effort has been put into finding a nice venue - one with ideal conditions conducive to bar billiards - and what is a convenient date in their calendar is obviously the paramount consideration.

Also raises the question of table availability as you will presumably be competing for the same set of tables??

Not shooting the messenger Tommo, just airing my thoughts. I do know that this will have an impact on the Wallingford league if they are unable to get the tables for their finals night.

Speaking with Brian Daniels over in Guernsey, there could be as many as three bodies competing for his tables over that weekend.
And his suggestion of 'diary filling up' and the ruling that it will be 'first come first served' would seem to suggest that this is not a unique situation ?
It is rather a lot to ask to expect us to plan any further than one year ahead. :o
Re: League Finals Nights etc, I would have a problem if our local leagues held ours at weekends, as they fall due round about the same time. But fortunately we hold ours midweek, hence there's no clash.

As you brought my name up in this discussion Mark, i must say that we never had the same weekend, year in year out. It all depended how many teams we had in the league and how long the fixture list went on for. May has always been a busy month, with Oxford,Wallingford & Witney all wanting the tables for the same couple of weeks, it`s always been first come first served We have actually brought it forward before now into April because we couldn`t fit in with the other leagues. Another thing, it`s far harder to organise a date for an Open than it is for a finals night. The advice i gave to Tommo & the Surrey organisers was to try and leave a 3 week gap between Opens. May was the only month that they could realistically hold theirs but it would clash with some finals nights. When Bar Billiards ltd were doing the tables, they often took 4 tables over to Witney for the Friday night and dropped another 4 off in Wallingford for the saturday/sunday. Looking ahead to next year, there are two weekends which Wallingford & Oxford could have after the Surrey open, and they still avoid the bank holidays :)

Thanks Mark and Henry, list updated with these latest three entries. That still leaves 43 slots, but entries at the moment are a trickle rather than a flood. Surrey is virtually central in the bar billiards playing world, but 80% of those received so far are from either Surrey or Sussex. :o We have a few from Kent, Oxford and Hants - but none from Berks or Bucks, which are adjacent counties. So how about it ? ;) ;D
