When I first set up the Mid Sussex web-site one of my first enquiries was from a guy in Alaska asking where he could purchase a table, and failing that he requested dimensions and was planning to make his own!!!!
I've since had a couple of HD failures and consequently have lost his email address but I can promise you that it is true.
I also had a couple of enquiries from ex-pats in Oz

Yes, there are quite a lot in the US, I had the Lion and Rose bookmarked, it is actually a franchise chain of 6 or 7 pubs in the area, all British themed (not sure if they all have tables though) www.thelionandrose.comwww.thelionandrose.com/index.cfm/mode/push/Container_Id/487/Container_Top_Level_ID/455/view_only/1.htmThe second page says to watch out for a Bar Billiards League coming soon! There is also this company who "theme" British pubs, including supply of Bar Billiards tables, based in Pensylvania: www.ukbrewing.com/www.ukbrewing.com/barbilFR.htmThis is probably the one referred to earlier in this thread with the Florida championships (this page also refers to leagues): www.theicehousepub.com/billiards.htmlScroll right down to the bottom of this page about a pub in Portland, Maine for a description of the Bar Billiards table (dated 2003): www.greenmanreview.com/archives/2003/old1003.htmlThen there is this "little beauty" which goes one step further than a Supreme ::) : www.ebarbilliards.com/There is an American guy who is a regular at the Sportsman who assures me there are a number of tables dotted around in bars in New England, there are at least 4 in Rhode Island where he comes from. He says he was taught the game by a lady from Jersey - the Channel Island version, not New Jersey. Consequently he is used to playing "off the spot" He also has seen tables in Pennsylvania and Michigan.

Some great links there, Q and Ros. I particularly like the quote on one of them: Bar Billiards is an opportunity for you to have all the advantages of pool without the disadvantages that accompany it. So we are a long way now towards knowing where at least some of the Jelkes tables exported to the US in the 1980's ended up.
That eBarBilliards looks a good recent invention ! ;D Careful, though, you must use the red whenever possible and the last ball has to be played into the 200 hole (not the 100). ;)

Hi,
I was wondering if any of your members knew of any Bar Billiards tables in the USA? I am an exile in New York City and have had an uncontrollable craving to play while i'm out here. I very much want to show my American friends that there are more pub sports than beer-pong and arm-wrestling!
If not, does anyone know of any sellers in the US, or in the UK who would ship a table out here? And does anyone know how much such an endeavor might cost? Lots of questions i'm afraid, and I know it's a bit of a long shot, but any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
George
ps Great website!

Ken Hussey of Bar Billiards Ltd has shipped tables out to the States, he once told me, best to speak to him he may have contacts there, glad you like the site, we're all slightly mad you know,

A little while ago I was told that there are a couple of leagues in the States. I looked on the Web and found lots of places with ads for Bar Billiards. Unfortunately they mean bars that have billiards (pool) in them.

Copied from the "Where else in the world" thread :
The U.S.A. - I learned recently that several hundred, maybe a thousand Jelkes tables were sold on there as antique furniture in the 80's by Bar Billiards Ltd.
The response to this from Sav was : "I have first-hand knowledge of tables in the USA"
My impression was that the tables were sold into private hands to satisfy American cravings for English art (why, they even bought London Bridge) and would therefore be found in drawing rooms in New England rather than in bars in Boston or New York. Perhaps Sav will offer us some enlightenment !

Dear All,
Thanks awfully for spending the time to answer my query.
I will follow-up on those British-exporter leads you suggested. But if anyone has any any news on one of those alleged "hundreds of Jelkes" tables shipped over to the USA in the 1980s, please do let me know. They appear to be hiding from me.
Thanks again,
George

Hi across the 'pond'. Unfortunately my PC crashed a month ago and wiped out all my emails and addresses, so I have lost contact with the people around the world who have emailed me. :'( I would keep your eye on Ebay in the States, tables appear on there occasionally, in fact there's one on your doorstep now. Brooklyn Bar Billiards Table. Chris.

Alas, the eBay Bar Billiards sale Chris forwarded me was a hoax. The seller didn't seem to exist, let alone the table! If anyone else has any info about playing Bar Billiards, or buying tables in the US, please do post them here. Thanks! George

Sorry that a firm 'blank' has been drawn so far, George. The eBay item was a strange case, the seller had not dealt before, so that's usually a sign to be wary. But the amount of the 'sale' was paltry - hardly worth all the trouble to go to for a scam.
Tables in America ? Well, the question of their existence has taken on a mystique akin with the subject "does life exist on other planets in distant galaxies ?". We know that it's a mathematical probability but can't seem to be able to prove it.
Sav needs to be called to the rescue......

Just stumbled across this, which seems to explain part of the mystery : www.ukbrewing.com/barbilFR.htmSo it seems that Atlanta is the centre of activity in the U.S.A.

Oooh yes, they've got one of our nice Jelkes tables over there. 8-) Pity they're abusing it by playing 4-Pin on it. ::)

Oh no! - not another map....... ;D ;D cheers Tony This could be a serious suggestion, a World Map! However, I don't think we'd be able to pinpoint the tables with such precision as we did for the UK - as afforded by Google Earth. As far as the U.S. is concerned, we only have vague sightings to go on, so any 'map' would have to be a primitive one. Here are the locations listed on this thread: - Alaska
- Atlanta, Georgia
- Brooklyn, N.Y.
- Dallas, Texas
- Florida
- Michigan
- Pennsylvania
- Portland, Maine
- Rhode Island
- San Antonio, Texas

I found a beauty of a Burroughes and Watts table at an antique shop in San Francisco. Now it's sitting in my family room. I was thrilled to find it. The game is even better than I remember from when I lived in the UK back in the 90s. If there are any displaced ex pats or players in the bay area let me know. It would be nice to have a game with someone who is familiar with it.
Jim.

I hope you find someone amongst our members/lurkers.

I was lucky enough to find one of the Jelkes tables on Craiglist about a year ago much to my surprise. It is now in my spare bedroom in my house in Santa Clara, California. My sons friends (late teens) think it is one of the coolest games they have ever played.

Having just got back from Las Vegas on my holsa few weeks ago, there is a hotel called "Bagatelle" Unfortunately didn't get any time to go in there, but would be interesting to see if they had tables of any variety...

I grew up in Rhode Island but now live in North Carolina. I've made many trips to England and love English pubs but never came across the game there. My only experience was about 10 years ago at a person's home in Rhode Island. It was a short visit but I fell in love with the game. He had purchased it from an English source and had it shipped over. After failing to find a US source, I recently did the same thing. I purchased a table from Peter Ludgate of Hubble Sports. It’s a narrow Sams. He did a great job restoring and shipping it. We’ve had it a few weeks now and the entire family loves it. We play all the time. I hope to add a standard / league size table one day soon.
As for tables in the US, I’ve traveled a lot on business over the past twenty years and have only ever heard of the one at the Idle Rich in Dallas. Other than that and the one in RI, I’ve never heard of any others in the US. And I haven’t come across more than one or two Americans that have ever heard of the game. They must be very few and far between over here.
I look forward to learning a lot more about the game.
George
