You saved me a trip to the Steam Engine, thanks Tommo, it was next on my list to check out. Steam Engine still worth a visit although no bar billiards ! Their four-cheese pizza really was delicious....although it made us run short of time and couldn't quite fit in our planned visit to the Pilgrim (Kennington Park) ;D Re: the new list from Fancyapint.com, a couple we can quickly knock off: - the Morpeth Arms in Pimlico doesn't have a table (just checked) - the Three Bells at Heathrow T3 didn't when I checked a few months ago - I recall it was on the map before, though I can't seem to find the thread where I reported it missing. Yes, I remember the Heathrow one being on their before, but I thought I'd better put it back for a further check as there seems to be a change in postcodes from Uxbridge initially.....from this I assumed the bar had been moved from the Middlesex street that the airport backs on to - to inside the airport complex. :-/ I may be able to check out the Tooting and Putney ones fairly soon, if so will let you know what I find. I'm not overly expectant that website will have got much right, but who knows... I too am a bit sceptical at the accuracy of the information from FancyaPint, and it's useful that you've volunteered your help with this, as otherwise it would take me about ten years to visit all the potential London venues at my current rate of progress ! ;D

We had just about halved the remaining investigations to be done on London, but this has restored it to the original figure ! :o[/quote]
I shall add these to my 'to visit' list!
A friend of mine is planning a Bar Billiards pub crawl/tournament day for a bunch of us Minigolfers later in the summer - should be a cracker and a very busy day!

I just Facebooked the De Hems Dutch Café Bar (Nicholson's Pubs) and they said "Hi Richard, unfortunately we don't have a Bar Billiards table in our De Hems Dutch Cafe Bar."
19 to go then...

I visited Number 1 Bar on Duke Street Hill near London Bridge yesterday to see if they still had a Bar Billiards table. They haven't. They've got five or so Pool Tables and an Out of Order arcade punching machine though.
I managed to get three games in at the King Charles I pub in the evening though :-)

Wouldnt it be awesome if merry old london founded a league, i could imagine the london open for one thing ;D Extracted from the other thread: London rather strangely appears to be a no-go area as regards bar billiards ! Maybe it's because people have to be able to get around really quickly to meet up to play matches and the M25 is seen as the border for which this is possible. Tables do however exist within the circle of the M25 - I have played on tables in Raynes Park and Tooting, and also a league match at the Emma Hamilton (Wimbledon Chase) - though I doubt if those particular tables are still there now ! There's a remote possibility that pubs within close proximity in local areas (eg Hackney) could unite to get something going......and some places like Mark's Bar at the Hix in Soho stage their own tournament periodically, but as regards a London Open - ain't never gonna happen. :-/

The Pilgrim in SE11 - visited today - doesn't have a BB table any more. It now has a pool table with red baize.
Would be great to get a London league going, but like Tommo, I can't see it happening
Thanks OB - deleted from map - Tony 2.3.13

On Tuesday evening my mate Brad and I planned to have a few games of Bar Billiards in London. After a five hour pub crawl we eventually got a game, at the King Charles I near King's Cross, where we are now regulars!
The Cheshire Cheese near Temple had a meeting booked in the games room so everything was off limits.
The Bishop's Finger in Smithfield hasn't got a table. I spoke with the landlady and while she knew of the game said there hadn't been a table at the pub in her two years in charge.
The Clerkenwell House pub has closed down.
On the plus side we received a warm welcome at the King Charles I and were aksed why we hadn't played there last week after our visits in the preceding weeks :-)
We had a few games, including some against some regulars. A lot of people in the pub were interested watching us play and asking about the rules.
I mentioned that there is no London league or competitions and the pub may be interested in hosting/running something on one of their quieter nights (and Saturdays are an option for 'hiring' the pub as it's not normally open then). A possibility discussed was a 'Bar Billiards Open Day' to gauge interest and just get people playing.
Any suggestions on taking this forward most welcome...

Well a London Bar Billiards Open Day sounds a fabulous idea, but as London isn't an area affiliated to the All-England Bar Billiards Association, any organisation of a competition would have to be off their own bat. All we can do on here is pass on what other Pubs within London are likely to have an interest. Maybe then the King Charles could send a poster around to these pubs and see what sort of reaction they get. The first ones that come to mind would be: Pembury Tavern (Hackney) Glasshouse Stores (Soho) Mark's Bar at Hix (Soho) Dog & Bell (Deptford) Selkirk (Tooting) Ship (Lambeth) Catford Bridge Tavern (Southwark) Cheshire Cheese (Adwych) William IV (Leyton) Who knows? We could yet find a London league springing up !

I checked out the three listed SW15 pubs today: Normanby, Putney Fox & Hounds, Putney Green Man, Putney Heath
It was a fairly pleasant wander, but unfortunately none of them had a bar billiards table. The first two did have pool tables. They need to be crossed through on the list and deleted from the map.

Thanks Old Blue,
Our latest source Fancyapint.com hasn't proved to be very reliable so far, but it's good to have a definite yay or nay on these.

Yes, Fancyapint doesn't seem to have got much right.
I do wonder though whether in future where there is weak evidence on the internet it might be better to add the pubs to the list, but not add them to the map until they have been checked out. The reason I suggest this is that those of us who check pubs out will refer to the list anyway, so don't need them to be on the map, whereas new visitors to the site, who are likely to find the map first, could be put off (as I must admit I was initially) by finding that claimed tables turn out not to exist.
That would I think keep the map more definitive. An alternative suggestion would be to find a way to record on the map whether the locations have been verified or not (and if they have, possibly, when that was).
These are just ideas, for which apologies if they've already been done to death somewhere before my time - I'd appreciate others' views.
On the plus side it looks like I have a fair bit of spare time over the next few weeks and intend to get through some more of them.

Last Saturday a group of us headed to five London pubs for a day and evening of Bar Billiards. Great fun it was too :-) The pubs were: • The Pelton Arms • The Dog & Bell • The King William IV • The Pembury Tavern • The King Charles I All of the tables were there and in good working order. Here's a report, results and pics from our visits hamandeggerfiles.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/a-london-bar-billiards-pub-crawl.htmlHoping to do another day out to a few more 'new' pubs/tables this summer.

A great report and a brilliant Ham and Eggar Files blog as per usual. On your blog you ask for recommendations for a future visit, and I can recommend two for you: - Glasshouse Stores, Soho (Regularly used but far from level)
- Ship, Lambeth (Probably not used much but perfectly set up)
Keep up the good work ! tommo

Well, Margo and I did visit the Smoke on Sunday and found the Cheshire Cheese quite easily (literally a stone's throw away from St Clement Danes church). However we found it (and the two pubs nearby) closed for the day, and a board outside notified the hours as "11am to 11pm Monday to Friday". * Most surprising for London, though I suppose understandable when you consider Fleet Street journalists were probably its main patrons and their base has now been shifted to Docklands. So with the Mustard Bar also shut, we once more drew a blank on the bar billiards front. However a good afternoon was spent admiring the architecture of the Temple Bars(Inns of Court): www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/activityandadventure/walkingholidays/5552171/Great-walks-around-London-the-legal-district.html... and after re-boarding the tube at Greyfriars, relaxing in the gardens overlooking the Tower of London before proceeding to the Barbican with its massively tall modern architecture nearby. Concert was brilliant b.t.w. * pity - looks a great pub to go to on weekdays, judging by their website:thecheshirecheese.co.uk/Table is a modern Supreme, but - hey ! it's a table. And their menu looks varied and not too pricey considering it's in the heart of London......

This film was shot in the Pembury Tavern, Hackney (report of my visit to this pub to be found on page 1 of this thread):
A 20 minute video of some guys and a gal having a crack at the game, learning the rudiments and having some fun in the process !
Postscript..............Pembury table has now been refurbished - as per this report on Twitter:

An evening out in London on Monday meant we had a chance to return to the King Charles I pub near King's Cross. We managed to have three games on the table - it's now got red baize instead of green. Great fun :) This table is currently up for sale on eBay.

So another London venue will be biting the dust......but no doubt they have their reasons. Re-listed 04/06/14: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bar-Billiards-table-/121355424740?Bought by our great leader and will become part of the AEBBA stock following a straight exchange for their one least conducive to transportation !King Charles I removed from the list of London venues.
