While waiting for a friend in London I decided to check out the marquess arms Canonbury road n1 2tb, cross it off the list, £5.25 for a pint of cider too. Crossed off the list and sorry to hear of your experience. Finding value for money in London is always a bit hit and miss and you can read of some of my own experiences on this thread ! tommo

A friend of mine told me that a friend of theirs had spotted a Bar Billiards table in The Parcel Yard pub at King's Cross station. I went for a look yesterday and couldn't see it. When I looked online I saw it mentioned as being in one of the Function Rooms www.parcelyard.co.uk/functions

AEBBA did not snaffle the other one it went ooop Narf.
I'm passing ST. P. with the 'bi-pedular electro velocipede' on Saturday doing a 'daytrip' to Wrexham, will take a look if I get time on the return journey.

A 2nd Jamies Bar in the City has a table: Creechurch Club Room, Jamie's Wine Bar & Restaurant - non-league - 18-22 Creechurch Lane, EC3A 5AY
Perhaps one day a restauranteur's challenge vs Mark Hix (also 2 bb venues) could be in the offing ?

I visited the glasshouse stores about 6 months ago and there was a supreme table there Thanks for that information, Jell. Along with the Pembury Tavern Hackney, the Glasshouse Stores has been the London venue most reported on. First we had this blog, showing a picture of what appears to be a Jelkes table: stonch.blogspot.co.uk/2007/02/bar-billiards-glasshouse-stores-soho.htmlThen I visited it myself and reported thus: Squire Richard then reported that in Nov 2012 the table was out of action. There's now good cause to get the venue re-instated on the AEBBA map.......lets hope the Supreme table has been set up better than its predecessor, which wasn't in any way level !

Popped in to Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese a month ago to check out their table. It's a supreme with bad water damage to the cloth, and looked pretty battered in general. It was shoved into a corner and I didn't even bother trying to have a game, had a game of darts instead!

Likewise, these four London ones to remove, which will lend more of a level playing field to our investigations ! Ashburnham Arms, Greenwich (table reported as removed around 2013) Conquering Hero, SE19 (also no table as at 2013) London Apprentice, Islleworth (also table gone) Magpie & Crown, Brentford (replaced with pool table in 2010)

Popped into the Masons Arms (Kensal Green) as the nearest one to Wembley according our map of tables (two tube stops away).
Nice roomy pub with good decor and atmos - and a nice drop of Aspall's - but unfortunately no bar billiards.

It was shoved into a corner and I didn't even bother trying to have a game, had a game of darts instead! Looks like it's since received some TLC, from this recent picture of it on t'internet: Hi Clive, may I ask where you found that picture? That is an entirely different table from when I went and their website still has a picture of the old one: thecheshirecheese.co.uk/, but maybe they haven't updated the website. But also I don't recognise the interior of the pub from your picture, the one that I know of is in the basement and that picture looks like it's got a window with daylight coming in. I have also noticed there are 3 "cheshire cheese" pubs in London. Could it be that another of them has a table? Cheers, Joe

You're quite right, Jell, the one I spotted last week when trawling for bar billiards table pics is of the Cheshire Cheese at Buxton Derbyshire. I'm deleting my post and putting the pic. up on the E.Mids thread insted. The London one is indeed a Supreme table (not a nice Jelkes) according to their website. I did try to visit there last year but it was on a Friday afternoon and the place was closed (they keep journalistic hours, I suppose).

THE SHIP , 171 Kennington Road , Kennington , London .
Their website shows a table , a table with SKITTLES .
They obviously still have a table , cos they just ordered a set of MUSHROOMS red , black and 2 white from me .
So now if you go there , you have 2 options of play !

During our day out in London yesterday Margo and I actually visited the Ship in Lambeth - and had a go on the table ! It is indeed an original (pre-war) Jelkes: one which, according to the knowledgeable barmaid, is a former B-B Ltd of Ascot rental, which the pub now owns. It is on free-play but the bar is permanently lifted, and the barmaid was happy to hand over a box containing the balls and pegs. The table remains in excellent condition, is nice and level apart from being set slightly downhill, and "700 and off" soon saw 6k on the scoreboard - much to the surprise and consternation of two lads watching. The Ship looks small from the outside but is like a tardis - massive inside. A wonderful aroma of cinnamon greets the customer. There are some defects in the wooden floor, which allow you to see down into the cellar below ! The table is however up against a wall meaning masse shots would be needed for any off-the cush shots to the left-hand 50. There is no overhead light. We had intended to eat there but the evening meal menu was extremely pricey and did not contain anything that really took our fancy anyway, so we decided to investigate the other potential b-b hostelry within range - the Steam Engine. The Steam Engine, just off the main Kennington Road, proved to be well worth the visit. Happy Hour extends from 4pm to 7pm and it is £2-95 a pint. There is no sign of bar billiards, a pool table only. But we shared a piping hot giant four-cheese pizza on a revolving stand for which, along with the pints gave me change from fifteen sovs, so I'm not grumbling. The concert was brilliant and we were back in Crawley before midnight. Super day. Yes, we've been to the Ship (see report above). Top quality Jelkes table, in better nick than any of the others in London that I've visited. No league there of course. Interesting that they've now ordered a set of mushrooms - perhaps the plan now is to switch it over to Four-Pin.

An interesting one here: SPG YOUTH CLUB, SPG CENTRE, 38 MORLAND AVENUE, CROYDON CRO 6EA (Fri nights only, 6.30 - 9pm) So the possibly of some untapped young talent may exist in the outskirts of Greater London.

Planning a visit to London tomorrow, may be able to investigate one or two.......... Whilst at Maida Vale I visited the Robert Browning pub, now re-named The Eagle, whose website claims to have bar billiards and actually shows a photo of a modern Supreme table. My plan was to see how they had handled the change to a new pound (old pound token ?) see how it played and chat to any regulars. There was no sign of a table, and the South African barman informed me that the pub "did not now cater for anything that energetic, and was now a relaxed, chilled out place". A couple of locals offered that there used to be darts in the left bar and bar billiards in the right bar but both had gone with the pub's refurbishment. Never mind, the pub was warm with comfortable decor and served food upsatairs although "the Sunday Roast was off". I settled for a glass of Sam Smiths cider which was nice and refreshing. So the Eagle, Maida Vale also to come off.

Progress continues with the investigations, and we have now reached the stage where future visits can be concentrated into four areas: North London, East London, South-East and South-West. The above list has been divided to reflect this accordingly.
