During a pre-match pub crawl Nick Brown and I found one in a pub in Ipswich about 15 years ago. We were there to watch Ipswich go up to the top division (may have been before the premiership) and Brighton be relegated to the third tier.
We played the 'East Anglian Open' on it and Brown won >:(
Long time ago, but so what?

Wenham, Near Hadleigh "East Anglian Open" has been switched for this year to Norfolk, though, with margo hot favourite to be first-ever female winner next week ! ;)

More than that there's a whole league in Suffolk, not affiliated to AEBBA.The previous admin never bothered to contact them after they approached me for help.

May I suggest then, that if they bother to enquire again, they are offered a free affiliation. Their website: www.sdbbl.co.uk/

More than that there's a whole league in Suffolk, not affiliated to AEBBA.The previous admin never bothered to contact them after they approached me for help. Sav I think I have found them, it is the Sudbury and District League(formerly known as the Greene King League) they seem to be thriving with 9 teams in 8 venues, the following recent article gives both an email address and phone number for the league secretary: www.suffolkfreepress.co.uk/sport/Bar-Billiards--League-seeks.3233904.jpThere are numerous articles about them in the Suffolk Free Press, including match reports going back to 2002, but clearly hinting at a much longer history. I wonder what type of tables/rules they play under? I would like to echo tommo's sentiment that they should be offered a free affiliation for their first year if they were previously ignored by the AEBBA. I'm sure the admin team here will extend an invite to the forum :) I would also like to propose that a Tarts "B" side should give them a challenge (looking at their usual scores) and would like to be considered :D

Raises the interesting question, what are the nearest AEBBA-affiliated playing areas to Sudbury ?
Well, due south and across the Thames there's the Medway League, but Cambridge is about 30 miles WNW.
Looks like a mission for Johnny George ! ;)

Correct, here are the latest happenings from Sudbury : www.suffolkfreepress.co.uk/sport/Bar-Billiards-Nine-set-to.4269855.jpwww.suffolkfreepress.co.uk/sport/Bar-Billiards-Doedy-is-the.4219417.jpwww.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-179786850.htmlwww.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-180720309.htmlBefore anyone scoffs at so-called low scores, I believe I'm right in saying that this league in Sudbury play 4-pin, which requires a different set of skills to the game that we play. This really is the ethnic minority part of our game which is dying out, and as far as we know little pockets of resistance exist in Wellingborough, the Isle of Wight (according to recent post from Honchair), and possibly the north of England - as well as Sudbury, Suffolk. At the risk of upsetting Sav, I would reaffirm that it's time to dump the contrived game of 'Triangles' and adopt four-pin as the 'True' Alternative Rules, and allow players that we have never met before to take part in an AEBBA-sponsored event. Can our consciences allow this rather quirky - but traditional - version of our game of bar billiards to die ? >:(

What is alternative rules, is it off the spot or something?
4 Pin is different to the version we play, are the 4 pin tables the same in dimensions?

Scores certainly point to 4 pin billiards.

Sudbury play 4-pin, as you can see in the photo. There is also a functioning 4-pin league in Northants, the Wellingborough League.
4-pin tables are normally Narrow SAMS (very difficult to play normal bar billiards on).
The "Alternative Rules" is a national event, the last one on the AEBBA calendar before the Grand Prix, I believe. It carries British Ranking Points. Since its inauguaration it has been the game of "Triangles" where instead of a normal break-off shot, when the table is cleared all the balls are put in a triangle between the 10 hole and 100 hole (like starting off a game of snooker).
So we have the whole market stitched up, the serious game, and the muckabout game, with serious players taking part in both. No room in our bar billiards world for poor old 4-pin. :'(

It's a four pin league, would be nice to get a photo of the tables to see if they're of the narrow type.
I've sent an email off to them.

Of course we're interested.
The subject of Sudbury has been aired several times elsewhere on here. It is of course a 4-pin League, probably played on Narrow SAMs tables - like 'your' Wellingborough one.
I believe we agreed in principle to give them a free affiliation to the AEBBA - providing they are interested.
You didn't get a reply before because a) the website link does not work, and b) we're waiting for the promised picture. ::)

I've done a bit of hacking and found that the url should be... www.sdbbl.co.uk/page/index.phpYou'll have to copy and paste this into your browser - it won't hotlink for some reason. *** additional - just found that the original link works if you cut and paste too.
