Splendid. ;D Recently been sifting through some wheat beers - there's a pretty good selection in supermarkets these days. I like this one: www.ratebeer.com/beer/weihenstephaner-hefe-weissbier/1156/15206/ Vanilla and banana by the bucket; maybe an acquired taste, but there's fun to be had in acquiring it! On honeymoon last month, we popped in to this place; www.tuckersmaltings.co.uk/Truly a bottly-beery heaven. The online shop is tempting - but so was the chance to browse glasses, beer towels etc from around the world. Unique place - just a shame that the rest of Newton Abbot is such a hole!

Tommo's favourite tipple over Christmas : It's Portuguese, and just seems to slip down smoother and quicker than normal. ;D 95p in Sainsburys at the moment for a generous sized bottle (about 3/4 pint).

The Royal Oak in Noninton, Kent ( a bar billiards pub) currently has a choice in ales of Old Speckled Hen, a Timothy Taylor beer, Bombadier, and Tanglefoot (from the Hall & Woodhouse Brewery, Dorset). Enjoyed the Tanglefoot Wednesday night ;D

After a study that has taken me 34 years to complete, it is my opinion that the best tasting beer is one that someone else has bought you

This is slipping down very well at the minute: The 'dubbel' variety is a dark brown, very tasty, 6.5% rather like a cross between a Mackeson and a barley wine. Gonna have another one in a minute. Probably sleeping on the roof tonight. ;D

To celebrate the Z's surprise success in the (Mid Sussex) League, Margo and I held a beer tasting evening for the team round our house. Most arrived on foot or by taxi and thus there was no holding back. ;) Pick of the bunch for me that night was this naughty little number: www.shepherd-neame.co.uk/beers/index.php?bottle_1698

Been buying this one up recently, 'cos Sainsbury's have it on offer at a mere one pound:
Theakston's XB. Rich, ruby colour. And very tasty indeed (he says, smacking his lips) :-* :P

The mighty Trams faced Biggleswade Town in the FA Vase on Saturday. Found a gem of a pub on the High Street called the Golden Pheasant with 6 real ales. Pick of the bunch was Hop Back Entire Stout. Wonderfully complex. Hyde's Jekyll being a close runner up.

We haven't had a recommendation for a while, but both Margo and I have acquired a taste for this one, currently on offer for £1 (normally £1-72) at Sainsbury's: A clear French lager, brewed with Champagne yeast, 5.2% vol., distributed by Coors.

Have to say I have a very poor opinion of beer in anything apart from a cask, then a glass and then in Sav. I find almost all bottles / tins a poor substitute. However on my own doorstep DogBolter a fine porter (live bottle conditioned) from Gadds the Ramsgate Brewery and not unpleasant ;D ;D ;D We take clean polypins of Gadds 'Number 5' to all of our motorcycle weekends and keep it cool with ice blocks! 20 litres (35 pints) for £50 so £1.50 a pint!! I can remember David Bruce's original Dogbolter when in Islington we used to go into the Flounder and Firkin, The Firkin chain was a revelation in home brewed beers which most used to brew on the premises.

At the risk of cries of 'sacrelige' here is a zero-alcohol beer which actually tastes like beer and not dishwater: Even my brother-in-law likes it, and he's an 8 pints a session man. :o

Think that beer is named after the river Piddle. The woodforde's Wherry is available in a self brew kit, have made two batches myself. 40 pints for less than £15. Going to be a heretic myself now and recomend a lager. Co-op have a new Checkeslovakian lager, and it is very good. Have found a number of lagers I like, then someone brews them under liscence in the UK and they taste like all the rest. Anoys me a bit. Thebitterone

Hi Tommo Have you tried the beer which is called Piddle ( Dorset.) Pete Not familiar with it although I am with Hall and Woodhouse (Badger beer) and there's a Thomas Hardy beer. There's a river Piddle in Dorset, maybe it's brewed using natural freshwater. :-/ :-/ :-/

There is a brewery in Worcestershire called the Wrye Piddle and I believe they sell a beer called "Piddle in the hole".

In the company of strangely named ales, I always enjoyed an "Old Leg Over" ::) ::). Good job we had a broadminded barmaid!! ;D ;D
I think Daleside only do it bottled nowadays.

Very dark, rich and nutty (he says, still savouring the taste): Sainsburys are doing a Shepherd Neame version for £1.19 a bottle at the moment.
