Can I just clear up a few points about the Frenches Club. It is true that the Water company own the club and seeing it doesn't make any money for it, they have decided to lease it to 'us' for quite a large amount of money or alternatively, knock it down and build houses. The committee have decided to go with the former and the long drawn out legal process has started. So if the lease goes ahead, the Frenches Club will remain. But another closure has coincided with this news which may impact more on the Mixed pairs, Redhill Invitation and other Frenches club BB tournaments, that Terry and Sue have announced their retirement of organizing and catering for the tournaments at the Frenches, after 20 years.

Thanks indeed Montyzoomer for the clarification. Either way it will be the end of an era. I particularly will miss the best Scampi and Chips I've ever tasted. :P :'( tommo

As some of the RDBBL members may have read in the local paper, the Sutton & East Surrey Water co. moved the goal posts for the club to lease the premises and as its been leaked and no more a secret, I'm afraid that the club will close on 31st May 2009. Great pity, 2 teams to find another venue, a loss of a great venue for one day tournaments, part of my life for 40 years... :'(

What unfortunate news!
I've spent many a happy day there over more years than I care to remember.
I hope Redhill find a replacement venue.

I don't think that the two teams would have much trouble in finding a home in this present climate, most pubs/clubs would be falling over themselves to accommodate :D

Indeed a great pity. The Frenches has been a great and convenient venue over the years.
I just hope that as one chapter closes, another will re-open, and in the meantime we'll just have to make the most of it while it's still there.

Another blow to bar billiards in these depressing times, but as already said sure venue will be found as pubs are definitely going to be looking for trade. Hope there will be other suitable venues for the invitation and the newly formed Surrey Open. Tony.
