Since Horsham and Mid-Sussex have their own threads about this, I thought that I would start one for the Lewes players that perform well in national events.... ;D
Starting off with Henry Brooks (Laughing Fish) who played superbly beating Keith Sheard (Oxon), Paul Sainsbury (Berks) and Tom Oliver (Guernsey) to win his group at the AEBBA Grand Prix played in Reading yesterday before losing to eventual winner Kevin Tunstall in the semi-finals. ;D
Amazingly, there was actually a Lewes League player in each of the 4 Groups for the Open Grand Prix.... :o ....with Richard Wooton (Black Horse), Dave Ingram (Laughing Fish) and Nigel Senior (Bridge) also taking part.... and Sandra Hall (Bridge) and Colleen Park (Laughing Fish) both also took part in the Ladies Grand Prix competition that was played at the same time. ;D
Well done to all involved. ;D

There is certainly plenty for the Lewes League to be proud of after the recent World Championships..... Nigel Senior (Ye Olde Black Horse) - Runner Up in World Singles and Winner of World Pairs Championship. Marcus Chipman (Ye Olde Black Horse) - World Pairs Champion with Nigel, Runner-Up in Group 10 of Singles, lost in Plate Round 1 Kevin Hall (Ye Olde Black Horse) - World Singles Semi-Finalist and Last 16 in Pairs (with Kevin Tunstall) Ian Lelliott (Laughing Fish) - World Singles Semi-Finalist and Last 16 in Pairs (with Mark James) Richard Wooton (Black Horse, Lewes) - World Pairs Semi-Finalist (with Gareth Lloyd) Alan Brackenridge (Ye Old Black Horse) - Runner Up in Group 2 of Singles, lost in Last 64 of main competition. Jim Millward (Laughing Fish) - surprising to find him in the Plate.... but he did go on to win it! Well done to all of them and the all of the other Lewes players who all had their moments over in Jersey.

I must admit that I had forgotten all about this thread until a comment was made in the car on the way home from the Oxon Open yesterday about what a successful day it had been for the players in the Laughing Fish K team! So, I thought perhaps I should start with that.... Congratulations to Jim Millward on winning the Oxon Open yesterday, beating Curt Driver (Kent) in the final. Ian Lelliott reached the semi-finals of the main competition before losing to Curt, while Dave Ingram lost to defending champion Gary Powell (Surrey) in the quarter-finals. Tony Jenner lost to England player Gerry Fitzjohn (Kent) in the semi-finals of the Plate Competition, Gerry having lost to Dave in the First Round of the main competition. Michelle Baden (Hikers Rest B) won the Ladies High Break Award with 6,820. Nice to see so many Lewes League players there yesterday and will try to pick out some of the other notable performances of the day when all of the results are available.

Having realised that I had missed our 2 years of history here (it is amazing how fast time goes!) I thought that I would make a atart on trying to fill in some of the gaps during that time....

Oxon Open - February 2014Certainly not a competition that I will forget as Dave Ingram (Laughing Fish) won his first national title beating his team mate Ian Lelliott in the final! Dave had beaten Colin Southouse (Glynde Club) in the semi-final after Colin had taken the notable scalp of Mark Trafford (Oxon) who was the current world champion at that time in the quarter-finals and his Colin's team mate Mike Daw also reached the Last 16 in the main competition. Ian Lelliott also joined the Sussex 20k Exclusive Club at this competition when he played the table out for 20,790 to beat Richard Wooton (Cock Inn) who had set the imposing target of 19,000 in the first leg. Kevin Hall (Hikers Rest B), Colleen Park (Laughing Fish), Nigel Senior (Hikers Rest A) and Phil Osborne all reached the Last 32 of the main competition and Bill Kerr (Laughing Fish) reached the Quarter-Final of the Plate Competition.

Surrey Open - April 2014The turn of Mike Daw (Glynde Club) to lead the way for the Lewes League players reaching the Quarter-Finals of this competition while his team mates Colin Southouse and Phil Osborne both reached the Last 16 and Sandy Harmer can probably feel unlucky to lose after making his first competitive table play-out with 13,320 only for Dave Ingram to catch his score and beat him. Michelle Baden reached the last 16 of the Plate Competition.

Ian Lelliott and Dave Ingram finished runners-up in the Pairs Plate Competition behind Mark Trafford and Keith Hollis (Oxon). In the Guernsey Open, Dave Ingram reached the quarter-finals and also took the High Break Award with 11,350, while Kevin Hall and Alan Brackenridge both reached the Last 16 of the Main Competition. Kent Open - July 2014
Richard Wooton (Cock Inn) continued his good form winning his second County Open title beating Gerry Fitzjohn (Kent) in the final to become one of only a very select group of players that have won back-to-back titles in national competitions. Nigel Senior (Hikers Rest B) lost to Richard in the semi-finals and Phil Osborne (Glynde Club) reached the quarter-finals.

Berkshire Open - September 2014This competition was notable for being the first time that a county open had been hosted by a different county (Oxon) as Berkshire were unable to find a venue in time after the Post Office Club in Reading closed. Dave Ingram (Laughing Fish) was runner-up to Mark Trafford but completed a good day by also taking the High Break Award with 18,700 while his team mate Bill Kerr reached the Quarter-Finals. Michelle Baden (Hikers Rest B) won the Furthest Lady Away by reaching the Last 16 and Ros Appleby (Plough Plumpton) reached the Last 16 of the Plate Competition.

AEBBA Mixed Pairs - October 2014
Colleen Park and Dave Ingram (Laughing Fish) won the competition beating Michelle Baden and Nigel Senior (Hikers Rest B) in an "all-Lewes" final, it was also the only defeat that Michelle & Nigel had all day as they had earlier beaten Colleen & Dave in the group stages while Ros Appleby (Plough Plumpton) and Colin Southouse (Glynde Club) had finished 3rd in the same group and just missed out on a place in the semi-finals on aggregate score.

World Championships in Jersey - November 2014 World Pairs Jim Millward (Laughing Fish) and Guernsey player Trevor Gallienne won their first world pairs title together beating the Oxford pairing of Mark Trafford and Keith Hollis in the Final. Jim and Trevor both played well throughout the competition beating former champions Kevin Tunstall and Kevin Hall (Hikers Rest A) in the semi-finals and Nigel Senior (Hikers B) and Marcus Chipman (Hikers A) in the quarter-finals. Derek Taylor (Cock Inn) and Rob Hall (Hikers A) reached the Last 16 of the competition. World Singles Dave Ingram (Laughing Fish) was the surprise winner beating Kevin Tunstall in a memorable final (for me anyway! ) after being rather lucky to progress in several of his games including the semi-final against Mike Daw (Glynde Club) who was making his debut in the competition and Tony Jenner (Laughing Fish) who reached the Last 16. Richard Wooton (Cock Inn) reached the Last 32 while Henry Brooks (Laughing Fish), Jim Millward (Laughing Fish), Ian Lelliott (Laughing Fish), Kevin Hall (Hikers Rest A) and Marcus Chipman (Hikers A) also qualified from their groups for the Last 64. Nigel Senior (Hikers Rest B) beat Rob Hall (Hikers Rest A) in the Plate Final to complete a great weekend for Lewes players while Colin Southouse reached the Plate Quarter-Finals.

Nigel lost to Phil in the semi-finals and Kevin beat Curt to set up a memorable final with Phil scoring 23,210 in the first leg and although Kevin played the table out for 21,170 he couldn't catch Phil's score.
