As a new member of the forum I thought it only polite to say hi. My name is Brian Sydenham and I live in a little village near Taunton in Somerset (or Zummerzet as we locals would say)
I have a growing collection of tables including one in The Blackbird Inn, West Buckland. www.blackbirdinn.net
As a joiner I have always been interested in the construction of Bar Billiards tables and am currently producing a replica of a Jelkes table (hope there are no patent issues) as I have one that I am restoring and thought it an opportune time to copy it.
I will post some photos of the project as soon as I get a few minutes.
Brian

Hi Brian & Welcome to the Forum. I expect there will be lots of interest in your project & also maybe some advice. take some time to explore the different sections as well as the different Counties boards there are some technical sections & some fun sections.
You need to talk to my mate Q who is a moderator & is the Founder member of the Cornish bar Billiards League.

Hi Brian and welcome, A "brand-new Jelkes" is a mouthwatering prospect and I don't think it has been tried yet, so theoretically you have found a gap in the market. Also your location could be a good catchment area, as although there were once thriving leagues in (travelling westerly) Andover, Pewsey, Taunton and Portishead, and the counties Wiltshire, Somerset and Avon taking part nationally, these have long since gone. It would be great to see a renaissance of bar billiards in the West Country ! I will get the Blackbird Inn, West Buckland, added to our map of known venues (link given below) as a non-league table. maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=201756322675068450682.000485981969d13618db1&msa=0tommo

Question for you Brian, and hopefully you've given this some advance consideration for your Jelkes replicas.........
What are you going to do about a timer ? The ones you find in all the traditional 70-odd year old tables are a masterpiece of Swiss/German engineering and are very difficult to obtain as spares. Working ones on the rare occasions they come up can command £300. The last retailer of bar billiards spares (Bar Billiards Ltd of Ascot) sold off their remaining stock when they ceased trading around four years ago.
The answer may well be to fit an electronic one as favoured by the modern Supreme tables, but these are not popular with players as they have a Pool table styled slot, inconveniently positioned as it skins your knuckles as you pick a ball out of the tray !
I have seen other tables with a slot mechanism on the side which is far less obtrusive.
A bar mechanism is an essential part of the kit, as without one you haven't really got a bar billiards table.

Hi Brian, only just realised that you are the closest forum member to myself, just checked it out and the Blackbird is only 1½ hours drive from me, I may have to pop up sometime in the new year and give you a game or two
