Reminder it is the Brighton AGM next Wednesday 29th July. There are a couple of rule changes submitted that will have a direct effect on playing conditions so it would be nice to see at least one member from each team so all views can be heard before voting

I am surprised that the proposals have not been circulated to Committee Members (at least) before the meeting.

I received the email from Jim, although I had heard that he had withdrawn that as there was no committee meeting to discuss it.... which he had requested at the bottom of the proposal. I have not received a copy of Jean's proposal....

May I just say that if Jim’s rule is being discussed, that given it’s ramifications to the entire league, I would be truly and utterly dismayed that a decision would even be considered to be taken on it without consulting the entire league…. The ramification of such a change in circumstances is too huge to be taken by a few people who happen to know about the AGM.
On that subject…may I ask how we informed our league members who did not view this message forum about the AGM date? There are quite a few of them I’m sure. I’m thinking of last year when hardly anyone turned up.

I think Jim has withdrawn his rule proposal. As far as I know most people are aware of the AGM date and not only by going on here.
Last year there were few people who turned up and the year before and the year before that. Could go back loads of years.
Its always the same people who turn up as although its wrong people are just not bothered and perhaps scared they might get voted on the committee?
The AGM is open to all who can be bothered to turn up to discuss any proposals put forward. People know this and if they cant be bothered once a year to turn up to discuss any changes then that's their lookout and will have to accept the decision made at the AGM.
Before this forum proposals etc were never discussed until the AGM why is different now
Rant over
See you tonight

This is not a reflection on your personally Jean, don’t take it that way. You do a great deal for the game and we are all appreciative of that.
Regarding your points, I was not aware of the date, so I’m sure a great many people were not either. To me it seems bad practice to announce the most important meeting of the year and give people 21 days notice…. And only announce it on this forum. Was this date published anywhere? No. So we’re relying on word of mouth are we? That’s not the way to ensure good attendance.
Before we start branding people as not bothering to turn up, I would recommend you guys do the following:
• Decide the date for the next AGM at the current AGM (standard practice for any committee or indeed meeting I have ever been too) • Publicise that date in the Team folders you give out each year • Failing that give people more than 21 days notice to change there schedule • Don’t rely on this forum, some people myself included check it very rarely these days • Be a little more specific about the start time rather than saying “8ish”
Do the following and you might be surprised how many people are actually interested in having a say about important decisions regarding our game.
I'm afriad I won't see you tonight, I have a dinner date that I won't change at short notice.

I don't think anything in my post suggested I was taking it personally.
I could answer all your points but I don't really want to get banned from here
Lets see what happens tonight. I know of at least 55 people (and I know there are more)who have been aware of the AGM date for longer than 21 days. Lets see how many are actually interested in having a say on important decisions regarding our game and turn up. Hopefully we will be surprised.
I'm assuming the 21 days comes in to it because of the date this thread was started. The date was known to people before this but was put on here when a venue had been booked

Just an observation, but low turnouts for AGMs seem to be a sign of the times. This is seen as 'apathy' but there could be something in what you say about people being 'scared at turning up and being voted on to the committee'. We advertise our League(s)' AGM all year round on the website(s) and take low attendance as a compliment, that people are happy with how things are run, and with the people running it ! It's when members turn out in force (= "mob-handed") that you can sense that something's wrong !
