Hi Tony
Just a question - and please don't all shoot me down cause I don't usually put a lot on here!! Why would Sussex arrange for an Inter League night on the same day as an AEBBA competion? Dave put the competition dates out last year on the 28th November. Just interested, as with our Inter Area we are given specific months to play games by, but arrange the actual dates to avoid any AEBBA competitions.
Dawn :)

Although looking at last years entries the impact would be low as not many people who played Alt rules last year play Sussex interleagues as well. Maybe it was an educated decision ? But did Matt sort the interleagues out ?? So maybe not Curt

Changing that rule for the inter league was not properly thought through I reckon. Why change something that had clearly worked for over 20 years? Playing in a Sussex league that nominates the order makes it more tactical and I think more interesting. And I also have played in a league that has drawn out the order for over 40 years...

Sadly not enough people support the league at agm and people that don't play interleague much any more voted for the rule change so maybe next year a few more people will turn up and put the rule back

Although looking at last years entries the impact would be low as not many people who played Alt rules last year play Sussex interleagues as well. Maybe it was an educated decision ? But did Matt sort the interleagues out ?? So maybe not Curt The decision about dates for Inter League was taken after considerable discussion among members of the committee, with 10 matches to fit in for the competition it is impossible to only choose dates that do not clash with other competitions and still have an end date before the end of the season. Unlike the Inter Area Competition, our games are given specific dates to be played although it is possible to re-arrange those dates with prior agreement from both teams, so teams do have the option to do that if players wish to enter the national competitions when the dates clash. Please bear in mind that, in addition to the AEBBA competitions that run (almost) every weekend from the middle of September until the end of November, there is also the National Off-the-Spot, Jersey weekend, Christmas & New Year, Sussex Individual Competitions (early January), Redhill Team Inter League Competition (end of January), Oxford Open, Sussex One Day Inter League Competitions (end of February), Bournemouth Pairs etc to take into consideration. We also try to avoid having matches on consecutive weeks as teams and players always seem to struggle to fulfill those. Sussex always try to support the County Opens / National Competitions and usually get more players to those than any other county, the Inter League dates were chosen to try to have the minimal impact on those based on the number of players likely to enter the national competitions. My personal view is that if there is a shortage of numbers at the AEBBA events this year that is probably more down to the travelling distance to the venue for players within some of the southern counties and the fact that the competitions are clustered together which does put some players off entering them when it means that they would have long journeys several weeks running.....

Agree with everything Daves said.
We have 17 teams split in to 3 Divisions. It is run as a league so Div 1 & 2 have 10 matches Div 3 8 matches.
Not sure how the Inter Area is played. Is it played on a league basis or a knockout? Makes a difference to the amount of games that need to be arranged. The Sussex Inter League would have 80 matches that would need to be arranged
I have just had a quick look at the dates and if we avoided all AEBBA competitions our Inter-League would not start until end Nov Beginning Dec This means teams would have to play 10 matches in 6 months.
To try and arrange a game other than a Sunday is almost impossible. Different leagues play different nights (Mon - Thurs) and many players play more than one league. There is no way if teams were left to arrange the matches they would get played on time.
With the amount of competition weekends Dave has mentioned as well as Easter it is impossible not to clash with something.
Thought did go into what Competition would be affected the least. Although there were 13 players at the Alternative Rules last year I think it would be fair to say that half only attended as they were at Keiths Birthday party and will not go this year.

Mental note to self - don't ask questions :) :) :) Hello Dawn, No harm done as it was a perfectly reasonable question.... hopefully now everyone understands why some of the Inter League dates clash with the AEBBA Competitions and knows that the Sussex players do have the option to travel up to Didcot and play if they want to. The new Inter League rule that has been mentioned does have an impact as far as the teams and players are concerned, under the old rule (Captains Choice) it was possible for players to arrive late and still play on the designated night, the new rule (played as drawn) does complicate that and would probably mean that if players want to play in the national competition they would either have to say that they are not available to play in Inter League that match or the team would have to rearrange the match.... not ideal but just one of the problems that the new rule causes.

Dawn there's no problem with both you and Curt asking the question and both Dave and I were trying to answer showing the problems arranging dates in Sussex
We're lucky in the fact we have 11 leagues affiliated to Sussex but this can cause problems when people try to arrange matches.
