Well done to David for winning the open yesterday.
He played a great match in the final giving me no chance. I’m really pleased to have made the final after a series of very close matches. The narrow tables certainly put a twist on things for those of us that normally play 3 - pin and it showed with the drop out rate of 3 - pin players throughout the day.
A very challenging but enjoyable day.

Congrats to Taffy and Curt and for the other achievers of the day. Always knew you could do it Taffy, remember this? Practising by yourself on your own bespoke table is fine, but it's a completely different matter when it comes to competition conditions. However in view of your obvious enthusiasm and the sheer scale of the practise you're getting (neglecting poor Ally !) I'll be tipping you as a dark horse. Having a little bit of luck along the way helps too and you certainly had a bit against Geoff Bridges when, thinking he could win with a last-ball 50, went for it, potted it - only to discover he had lost by 10 ! But, to win an event like this you not only need skill and a tiny bit of luck - but bottle ! And you proved you have plenty of that.

To add......a huge thanks and well done to the organisers, Dave Lillie, Chris Cass, Jeremy Fry, Steve Hale, Del Atton, Girls on the admin desk, the caterers (who offered an excellent reasonably priced breakfast), Chris Saville in his support role, in fact anyone directly involved in making for such an enjoyable day. Your fundraising efforts for the worthy cause are noteworthy too, all-in-all you do a thoroughly professional job.
The use of narrow tables, as has been said already, offered a fresh challenge and levelled the playing field. Games were won by back-of-the-table ability and a willingness to take calculated risks on the high-value holes. How 4-Pin should be played ! It was good too to note the skills demonstrated by some of the lady players.
My journey took exactly 2 hours each way, leaving the A12 at Marks Tey, then cross-country via Fordham. Hope to make it again next year, and maybe do a stop-over if the the plans of expansion to a full weekend of doubles and singles come to fruition.
Thanks once again, tommo

Another great weekend in Sudbury. Lots of games decided on the last ball!
Playing on the narrow tables was brilliant and I'm looking forward to next year.
Thanks to everyone involved for all their efforts, and I'll see you next year!

Its nice to read so many positive comments but I was saddened to hear of a couple of things that tainted the day for a few people. Unfortunately I wasnt made aware until long after the open had finished so there really isnt much I can do apart from send my sincere apologies to those concerned. I have made some of more of our committee members aware and I can assure you things will happen this end.
Thank you once again to everyone who supported our open and helped us raise such a fantasic amount for charity
I think all the rooms and tents have already been booked at the bay for next year.

A great Day, well organised and run. food was great value, organisation top class.
I went into the hall yesterday for my reading glasses and the oldest members of the club were hard at it. reminds me of when i used to organise the Soham 10s rugby tournament. we had the 'Chippenham Allotments Society' marquee and it was put up by 8 octaganerians and they moved like the marine corps! every year we promised to be there to bring it down and only 1-2 lads would arrive blind drunk. so really well done to those that were still there yesterday clearing up....you're special (Chris!).
as for the competition i was so proud that Newmarket lads in their mid-fifties without a pub table, or a pub, or a league even for 23 years were able to play so well. we had two sessions on my wide table and then a fortnight ago we had one evening at the White Horse. I did well but on so little practice my 3 colleagues were amazing!
for those that don't know, Andy pollard couldn't do a thing right and indeed having lost all 3 league games he was losing the KO match 1450-450 when the lady unfortunately took the black skittle out. I mentioned that this would would be a turning point for Andy and so it proved.
As for myself, Simon deserved runner up in our group 9 table and he lost our game 2250-1750 and as we agreed when he said; 'I won't get 1750 too often today and come second!' and so it proved I think.
Jeff Bridges and I had the awkward table 6 and the game could have gone either way. I had a reasonable cushion as the gate dropped but he cleared up and I'm told someone whispered in his ear that the red in the 50 (100 points) would do. ah-oh!!! But Jeff was close!
I then played Chris Haynes over two legs on table one and about halfway through the first leg he discovered a break shot! OMG!! I clung onto my 1,000 lead for 6-7 minutes and knew that leg two would be tough if he had a great start. he also seemed to sober up! (I hope that's fair Chris) and luckily I stuck with him. he then had to chase the game which just made me safer but if he'd REALLY got that break shot going I would have been gone.
in the Semi's I played (I've forgotten your name, I'm sorry) some of my best Billiards and he reminded me of me when I was younger because he chased some big shots and again, that just made me more comfortable.
next to me was the other semi and I don't know Curt but I do know Steve Hayle and I thought Steve (who'd just put away my mate Colin Baxter who I think is a better player than me) was going to see to me. i said 'so it's me and Steve in the final then?' "no mate, you've got Curt Driver".
I guess that means I didn't have any pre-conceived ideas so I just settled in. Like all my games I missed everything for 1-2 minutes but nailed the centre section. I really piled it in that middle sector and I always stand to the left of a player. Jeremy moved the counter over and I thought I saw 3,000. so i moved to the right the next time and stood STARING at the score. someone else was pretending to be me and had scored 3,000! I still don't know who he was!!! there was still 5 to go and then, class player that he is, Curt went from like 750 to 1,500 and i had an 1,800 cushion for the second leg.
he never once resorted to speculative no-hopers and tried to break build from beginning to end....fair play to you Curt.... I thought I'd play to the end though and see if I couldn't go unbeaten in legs as well and so I sneeked the second leg as well.
so that's my story, an abbreviated one. I didn't know what i'd do rather than was hopeful. If i did anything well it was to break build relentlessly by "digging" balls off the back cushion and knowing what exactly both balls would do. I think it was the backk cush that won it. But i think anyone who gets the break going is still going to take some stopping next time.
everyone learns a little off everyone else and it will transpire soon enough how best to play. good players are still good players...
thanks again
Taffy

Another good weekend, not much to add to what has already been said, always made welcome in the pubs when we go up from Wednesday, and great to have the challenge of playing narrow tables.
There will always be some slight problems, which are being addressed but I would imagine most will be back next year, and we will be along for the 4 team event later in the year.

Well bigjt I hope you will remember where to get the Sunday roast dinners.
Taffy I have sent you a PM but congratulations on winning the open. And I did hear you returned to the masonic Sunday morning, guess it was just to make sure you wasn't dreaming and nothing to do with leaving your glasses there. I should also say I did go there to help take the tables out. Only problem was that I was two hours late, sorry Chris and del. On a plus note I did remember I was staying at the bay this year

I've managed to get two good articles out of it all for the The Tharp Four in two of today's papers, the Cambridge news and the Newmarket Journal. Not sure if the Bury free press wrote anything Dave if you could have a look?
Just trying to get publicity for the game and there's the offer of a table for any pub interested in trying the game. you never know do you!
I'll scan them up and put them up here in the next few days. Alfie took me home past the Tharp Arms, Chippenham (Cambs lads C-A-M-B-S!!!) but he didn't want to stop and I said they aren't interested in some toss-pot showin off but I went in on the Sunday and the last Captain was there, old and ill i'm afraid and he was a little interested but as for the rest well, you know....
anyway, i wrote a very nice letter to the majority owner in the 'people's-owned pub' and I'll keep tapping away....
cheers

Full credit where it's due: www.elystandard.co.uk/news/soham-man-scoops-first-prize-at-bar-billiards-competition-1-5456859This years competition was also remarkable for a number of achievements......... 1. The Newmarket boys (check out the above article)2. Curt Driver managed his fourth final in six years. 3. Andy Hill (last year's Plate winner) and Steve Hale made it to the Semi-Finals - the only Suffolk player to have managed this up till now being Luke Cole-Watts in 2014. 4. Hastings's Phil Osborne and Chris Haynes (quarter-finalists) proved they could handle narrow tables without the need for the double-50 hole break. 5. Dave Lillie shrugged off the morning hangover to make it to the Plate final. Roll on the 2019 competition - can't wait !

thanks for the link Tommo. I have to work the computer when Ally moves away....and fast too!...woh betide if I'm still in the chair when she comes back so I got the information in order of priority out to the Newmarket Journal (Printed), The Cambridge (Evening) News (printed) and then the Bury (St. Edmunds) Free Press. alas, where I live now is nearer Ely and I got the info to them a little late for Thursday's paper. I guess there might be something in ink and paper next week. The lad from Newmarket was right, it wasn't just a sports story, it's a human interest story. Can i mention that in the notorious first game on table 4 between Phil Osborne and Colin Baxter (they started the game three times!), Colin had the good fortune to get the break shot off three times and was lining up the 4th when Phil mentioned that 3 was the maximum for the same holes. Colin didn't know this so on behalf of Colin I'd like to publicly thank Phil for that sporting gesture. Cambridge News Thursday 29th March Newmarket Journal Thursday 29th March They have half copied what i wrote and decided on the rest themselves. regards Taffy

I think these are third party links (?) at the moment but sending them as attachments may be too large for the forum in it's present form.

Hi Tommo
that is their online report and is from thursday morning. So the actual hardcopy is next week, next Thursday.
Was great to have the write up in the NJ as it is where my local tables were. would have been nice to have been in the Bury Free press as well. maybe Dave Lillee will report back on that as copies get as far south as Sudbury. 4-pin BB means nothing to the CN or the Ely Standard.
Hello Tony, and thank you. I use one of those photo store web sites at $2 per month.
cheers
Taffy
