Could anyone confirm dates for this as the May bank holiday is going to be on a Friday instead of the Monday as a one off, so as looking to arrange next years leave, just wondering if going to be Saturday/Sunday 2nr/3rd May thanks

Hi Tony, I was already going to bring this matter up at our AGM which is in two weeks time. As it has to be fully discussed, hope you can wait until then. However I might ask for some thoughts from the main organisers prior to this meeting so that options can be considered.

Hi Norman Logically it would all move back a day if on that long weekend - Pairs on the Friday and Singles on the Saturday but: Does Guernsey get the Friday as a holiday ? so the organisers are not inconvenienced in taking a day off work ? Would the hotel you decide to use do Friday / Saturday ? Or will you just still do the first weekend in May ? Personally:( but not expected to be considered at all ) We sail on a cruise on the 12th May 2020 - so would appreciate an early decision as we come out for 6 days to Guernsey this will be key here for us personally re return for the cruise I would though appreciate the committee making an early decision please whatever that may be x

Hi
I don’t know why you couldn’t still play on the sat and sun as normal ?? The move of the bank holiday to the Friday doesn’t really make any difference. Most players go out on the Friday and come home Monday. For those working it just means you book the Monday off work instead of Friday ....... Simples

That was my thinking Curt but want to make sure of getting the time off.
Norman no problem can wait for the meeting, but my thoughts same as Curt, for me the normal first weekend in May makes sense.

I agree - just play it on the first weekend as usual would get my vote. A lot of people travel on the Monday anyway.

My selfish vote would be the bank holiday weekend.
For those of us working it means 1 less day of annual leave needed as one day is a bank hol .

One other factor has come into the equation which may affect hotel bookings that month. May 9th 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the Liberation of Guernsey from German Occupation. Liberation day (May 9th) is always marked by a bank holiday and most companies will close if the day falls on a weekday. As next years' Liberation Day falls on a Saturday and it the 75th year, there is pressure from a lot of quarters for the local Government to declare Friday May 8th or Monday May 11th a Channel Islands bank holiday, As this would have great consequences for schools and government departments, there are many discussions going on behind the scenes involving the powers that be from Guernsey and Jersey as they have to agree jointly on such a decision. However at the moment there is a possibility that Guernsey could have two bank holidays in the same week. It could be a very busy weekend for flights and hotel bookings so I would hope that decisions could be made as soon as possible to allow the event to flow as smoothly as ever in 2020.

my personal view would be to have it the week before the liberation weekend. The cost in going to this open is already quite high, given its usually a bank holiday weekend and if it were on the same weekend as the liberation day, it would enevitably put the prices up even more.

Looking at the possibility of two bank holidays on the 2nd weekend in May for Guernsey, would it not be sensible to make an early decision to hold it the first weekend in May as normal, the Friday and Monday Bank Holidays in 2020 are only going to be one off, then it will revert to the first Monday in May. As Mark says the prices will go up for the 2nd weekend, hotels will be at a premium and flights extra busy.
Agree with Chris that it is early but some of us have to book time off work, and where I am it is a year in advance, also like to check out the best deals.
Thank you Norman for keeping us updated.

All
We are currently discussing the issue, at the moment it looks like we will remain on the normal weekend. However it is our AGM next week and the new committee may have a different view.
As soon as we have something confirmed, we will let you know.

Following the A.G.M. of the Guernsey Bar Billiards Association held last evening, it was decided that the 2020 Guernsey Bar Billiards Open will be held, as usual, over the first weekend in May at Les Rocquettes Hotel, that is to say the 1st, 2nd and 3rd May. Whilst this may not suit everyone, the general feeling of all present was that it would be more practical to keep the usual dates for operational reasons. Also, it was noted that the following weekend will be extremely busy with the 75th Anniversary of Liberation from German Occupation, with extra events and celebrations planned in Guernsey. Many Hotels and are already being pre-booked, and travel slots will be taken up as soon as the schedules come out. We thank you all for your loyal support in the past and we all hope to welcome and see the usual players and supporters back at Les Rocquettes Hotel once again, as well as some new ones possibly next year. Thank you all. Norman Wilkinson on behalf of the Guernsey Bar Billiards Association.

Thanks Norman
To be honest, selfishly that totally suits us as we cruise from 12th May.
Regardless of the date I would like to thank all for making a prompt decision as I can get on and book.

Having never missed a Guernsey Open since it started, the defending champion is planning on going next year. Please can someone advise when entry forms will be available? Many thanks, in anticipation.
