Old Oak 2, SPCC A 3 @ Salfords SC (l.h.table) *Nick 730, John S 4780 Clive 4070, *Tracy 2940 *Martin 4000, John M 1090 Paul 1760, *Laurie 3430 Charlie 970 & 310, D.C. 3800 & 3740 (decider over 2 legs)
Sleezy the best score on the night, although Martin could have made 6k had he not put the balls down 4 times. A good evening with sociable opponents, whom we wish the very best in the next round.

Horley CC | 1 | v | 4 | Nomads | Roland* | 60 | - | 3110 | JP | Nev | 1430 | - | 2510 | *Jim | Aaron* | 4370 | - | 0 | Michael | Alex | 400 | - | 6820 | *Joe | Chris* | 2000 | - | 2020 | Abbey |
First up this week was Roland and JP. Sadly for Roland his night was going to be foreshadowed by his first shot - where neither ball reached the pockets - and this was the script sadly. JP steadily accumulated as he has done all season but Roland finished on 60 - a score which does not reflect how he played. 0-1. Next up Nev and Jim battled out a scrappy leg, in a similar fashion to the Bill Burwood decider last week, and it was Jim who once again came out on top. 0-2. Third up Aaron got comfortable with the table quickly and looked far more comfortable at the baise than Michael. Despite this the game was nip and tuck throughout but Aaron ran out as a deserved winner. 1-2. So now things got interesting, from a position of control the Nomads, all of a sudden, looked shakey and when Joe came off after 2k attentioned turned to Alex and how he would cope with the top. Before he could get the break back though Joe added another 3k to give himself a 5k lead with 8 minutes left. Alex cleared the balls and started to accumulate steadily and, although he was finding tough going on the split shot, he kept managing to scrap away, steadily accumulating to the point he was 2k behind with 3 mins to go. Sadly, at this point though, the troublesome spilt proved costly as a ball was left in the centre of the table. Alex tried to hit it direct but took out the black peg - ending the game and match as a contest. 1-3. Last up Chris and Abbey played out an enthralling battle. With the table loaded early on Abbey showed great skill at the back of the table to accumulate points without ever getting back to the break. All the drama came to a head after the bar though as Chris had a 90 point deficit as he approached the table. He cleared up wonderfully and - now 80 points up - he just needed to sink the remaining white in the hundred. His shot was wide - though - and Abbey stepped up and slotted it in the 100 first time to come away as the winner consigning Chris to two cup defeats in two weeks by an aggregate of 80 points... harsh! 1-4

Presidents Cup Quarter-Final played at South Park Merstham VC B | 3 | v | 2 | Nomads | Tony Cross* | 8910 | - | 3210 | Jim Balchin | Bud Abbott | 2970 | - | 6860 | *John Palmer | Colin Robbins* | 11350 | - | 4770 | Michael Wilson | Geoff Jukes | 3990 | - | 4210 | *Max Burt | Gary Powell | (12080*,5220) 17300 | - | (760,4300*) 5060 | Abbey Balchin |
A clash of the two league leaders in the Presidents Cup Quarter-Final produced a real scare for the favorites, Merstham Village Club B. First up captain Tony set the tone for his team. He was well aware Jemima's last visit to South Park saw him get 12k so made sure he finished this leg in one visit. The first three thousand was sketchy - several trips to the back of the table - but after that Tony got into his flow for 8910 and tap for the leg. Jemima came to the table after and added 3k across a couple of visits. 0-1. Next up the Nomads form man, JP, faced off against Bud. JP was a man on a mission, a sublime 4k break to start in which he admitted afterwards his own surprise and delight "I was even leaving the one-up where I wanted!" Bud couldn't get the balls back but the brilliant JP could, adding a further 2k to put the leg in the ledger with Bud out of time to catch him - despite getting the break back late on. 1-1. Third on was Colin and Michael. Colin took a leaf out of his captains book, making sure he got it done in one visit. There was only one excursion down the back as Max said "this is perfect Bar Billiards". He was also in awe at the fact that Colin was essentially stood up while playing - Max being a snooker player his chin is used to being firmly to the cue - thankfully Gary was on hand to explain to Max that as Colin is about 123, so he can't bend over so well now. Colin tapped up on 9600, leaving Michael seven minutes to chase. He got to 4770 but caught his one up too thin trying to rush- although he likely would have fallen short anyway- and Colin played the rest of the table out. 1-2. Next up was the Nomads "Mr. South Park", Max, against Mersthams "Mr. Dependable", Geoff. Max was on and off quickly, missing his opening split shot, and Geoff immediatiely got the balls back. It was ominous, it looked like the dependable Geoff would replicate his teammates before him, make enough to win the leg and tap. However when people play Max at South Park there is always a twist or three in store. 3 and a bit k in Geoff caught his split too thick, the white pulled up short of the 100 and the red came inside the 50. Game on! But Max was rattled, he'd clearly been thrown off by his early miss and it looked like the pressure was getting to him. A battle at the back commenced. It seemed inevitable that Geoff would get them back, Max's inexperience of the back of the table letting Geoff back in, but he could never clear. Then came the moment - Max got the break back! plenty of time to go but he pushed the red past the 50 almost immediately and was off. Just a few minutes remained and time was getting tight for Max, but thankfully for him the throw on the RH cushion caught Geoff out and Max got one last chance to pinch victory from the jaws of defeat. 2.5k in three and a half minutes. Max got the balls back and started the chase. Initially he went to hard, the balls flying into the holes but taking an age to drop, but as he settled his pace got better and he was on track to overtake. Clunk, the bar has gone. Max looks to the scoreboard and tries to work out where he is. 80 behind, 5 balls left. We've been here before, the whole Nomads team held their breath and prayed that the "Sleezy game" wouldn't rear it's head again. Both whites went down - he was 20 up. "One ball" was the call. Phew. Max chuckled to himself "we've been here before". Indeed we had, this time Max made no mistake, one-up was complete, now for a nice 10 split... no. Max decided to pot into the 50. There was one ball left and he was just 120 up! Thankfully the potential crisis was averted, the 100 went in clean as a whistle as Mr. South Park did it again - a superb win in his debut season. 2-2. After all that excitement, Abbey was not best pleased at the prospect of two legs against Gary. Them's the rules sadly Abbey. Gary was not going to make the mistake Michael made in his singles match against Abbey - that be losing every break he could possibly make - and opened up with 8430 and touch. Abbey got a bit of table time, but Gary made sure of a big lead by finishing off to stick up 12k. Abbey had the break in the second leg and went about her task admirably. 12k was always a very tough ask, but she had the belief of Max for sure - he went through the emotional rollercoaster - as Abbey racked up her seasons high break of 3940. Gary eventually got the break back and caught up and very unsportingly declined the opportunity of the 200 in both legs, much to the disappointment of the Nomads. 2-3. So a brilliant game which was close to an amazing upset. Tony, Colin and Gary gave their opponents no chance while JP and Max were superb in taking it to a decider. The re-match is in a fortnight as the Nomads visit Merstham in the League, the question is... can they get their revenge?

Spcc A 4 Salfords B 1
Laurie 4460 Mark 1280 DC 9130 Dave 1570 Tracy 3800 Tom 4600 John 5800 Caroline 1300 Vern 5160 John 1300
First up Mark and Laurie. Mark off early and Loz with a good chance took a 2k lead. Plenty of goes each and Mark pulled a Few points back. With time running short Laurie cleared them and made another useful break to win the leg.
Game 2 and a crucial big game for both sides saw DC v DJ. DC with the break and off with a very useful 5k and a vital lead. Dave struggling to get the balls back but DC cleared some awkward balls and back on the break. One last great visit and Game over 2-0
Tom v Tracy next and Tom off with a steady start. Tracy next to get the balls back regained the lead. A few goes each and a pretty Level game. Tracy next to make enough to gain a good lead but Tom played really well to make enough late on to nick it and Put the b's back in it.
Game 4 and yours truly and Caroline. Only off with 1500 and the game got bogged down at the top of the table. Plenty of goes Each and I eventually got them back and made 3k enough for frame and match.
Last up and dead rubber John and Vern. Very similar to my leg previous a few breaks each until Vern made enough to win The frame . 4-1.
A nice evening with Salfords B at the Garland and our 3rd encounter in a month. Victory at last and cup honours shared.

Last night saw defending champions SPCC B taking on the league chasing MVC B in the Presidents Cup semi-finals, with MVC B looking to exact revenge for the damaging league loss they suffered at the hands of their opponents just a few weeks earlier. The game was played at the Garland and Denise won the toss, opting to have the second and fourth breaks, so first up was Bud with the break. Bud didn't seem to get the pace of the table, although he was far from the only one on the night, and he was off with 1k. Pete - who is in a rich vein of form currently - got the balls back quickly and set about adding 4k. Bud was unable to get the balls back and another 2k from Pete put the game to bed and chalked up a crucial leg against the break. 1-0. Next up Mick and Tony. Mick started well but seemed to start struggling as he appeared to experiment with the break - trying to get the white ball in clean. A good opener of 2k and, with Tony unable to get the balls back, a further 2k break was soon added. Tony continued to struggle to get on the break and by the time he did it was too late as he could only add a rapid 2k before the bar went. 2-0. So with just one leg required for SPCC and Denise ready to feed off any leaves from Geoff, MVC knew they'd need an excellent display to force a decider. Geoff started well, amassing 3k before leaving a ball right between the 100 and 10. Just trying to clip it on the way down the white rolled agonisingly past the object ball... but the trace of side meant it hit the top cushion and glanced it on the way back for the break to be kept! With the balls now awkward in the middle, both players had the task of clearing up and it was Geoff who did this first and added a further 3k to his score. At this point Geoff held a 6k lead with 6.5 minutes remaining, but Denise couldn't clear up first time leaving her to make a wonderfully amusing break of 3k to finish off. Lots of comments started flying about regarding who had prepped the table - particularly in scorer Michaels direction - but his return was simple "I got 15k on this last week, so I'll hear no complaints about this top thank you!" 2-1. So the key game was to come, Martin had the break and he started off with a steady 2k. Colin had one shot to get them back, but failed and Martin once again pounced, clearing the table without an issue and adding a further 3k. At this point Colin knew he had to get going but once again Martin had cleared and he added a further k to seal the victory. Colin eventually got the break back, but with time almost out he could only add a few consolatory points. 3-1. So the defending champs march on to the final where they will either face their fellow South Park residents or Fritz-inspired Salfords Y - and by Fritz inspired I really mean team spoons. Good luck to them in the final, MVC B will now focus on their chase of SPCC A having ceded the title-lead to them in recent weeks.

Salfords Y 1 - 3 SPCC A
Fritz* bt Tracy Baz lost to *DC Nev* lost to Laurie Karen lost to *Sleezy
Played at the Garland on Tuesday night, South Park could have won 3-0. Tracy very close to an epic comeback (500 needed, 6 balls left iirc) but just missed out. DC was comfortable to overcome Baz, Laurie came past the astonishing 8-peg Nev! Slee finished off to set up a South Park derby in the final!

SPCC A 1 SPCC B 4
SPCC B retain the Presidents Cup
SPCC A won the toss and Vern decided to have the breaks in the 1st 3rd and 5th legs.
Dave lost to Denise, Dave off to an early lead but a good break of 5K plus put Denise in to 2K lead, but she left Dave enough time to catch up, he played the rest of the table out and had the hundred shot to win but missed, Denise hit her shoot a little weak but it just reached the hole, teaterd on the edge and eventually dropped. 1 nil SPCC B
John lost to Pete, Pete built a lead 0f 3K with John struggling, Pete had a chance to make the game safe but lost a 1.5K break, John break back but not fluent, came up 1K short. 2 nil SPCC B
Vern Lost to Genette, Verns break but did nothing with it, Vern first to get break back, got up to 3.5K but struggling wit the 1 up he sunk the break 4 times!, Genette then made a 3.5K break, no one got much more. 3 nil SPCC B and cup retained.
Junky lost to Mick, Micks break and no pressure on him showed how the table should be played, near 10K break, game over, 4 nil SPCC B
Laurie beat Martin, Laurie losing plenty , I could not do much (to many Jack Daniel's as we had already won), Laurie trying out different splits ran out an easy winner. 1-4 SPCC B
A good night and very proud of our team for retaining the Cup having defeated the League Champions in the Semi and the League Runners up in the Final.

Many congratulations to our B team retaining the President's cup at Salfords last night we were never really at the races and they were a very worthy winner. First leg a pivotal one and so close we made a few too many mistakes and were Punished A great evening as always with the B's with plenty of friendly banter. A year of near misses and roll on presentation night.
