Howlett/Newman 1, Hammond/Clack 2 at the Windmill tonight. Played in a torrid atmosphere, and apologies for the testosterone-fuelled Neanderthal over in the corner making it difficult for players and scorers alike to hear themselves think. Good to see both sets of players arriving with support, and supporters rewarded with a close contest. Leg 1 Twiggy a good opening break of just under 3k, Billy replied with a patient 1k, it went round a few times before Noggs put it beyond reach. Leg 2 Clacky a similarly well constructed opener of 3k and that was the difference at the end. 1-1 Decider... Nip and tuck throughout, all players contributing. Thought Noggs was going to snatch it, but unlucky in pegging a useful 700 and Clacky was on the table at the right time at the end.

Michael Wilson 2-1 James Childs 2860 | *4320 | 4060* | 3280 | 6640 | 4900 |
On a miserable night where the rain poured down constantly, Michael and Porge faced off in their overdue QF. Michael won the toss and opted to put Porge in, but the first frame was a struggle. Porge only made a k on his opening visit, and when Michael got them back he could only respond with a k too. Porge got the break back twice more, again adding about 1k each time, and Michael practiced the split off both one-ups that Porge had left short, twice rimming the 100 and taking out the peg. Michael did get the break back to add 1k, but hesistansy had crept in as he tried to overcompensate for the ridiculous LH roll on the splits and so was soon off. Porge was the better player, clearing balls at the back of the table with more ease and took a deserved lead. 0-1. Second frame and it was Michael's break. Having impressively cocked up the break in the opener, caution was the order of the day with an opener of 3.3k - split left short with both balls on the edge of the holes to end the break. Porge had two stabs at the break, making 1.4k and 1k respectively, but couldn't chase down Michaels opener. 1-1. So, a decider. The coin was spun again but Michaels call of "Heads" fell of deaf ears, the coin deciding tails was better and so Porge had the choice. The final leg is neutral breaks and Porge decided to set a target. He started well, steady accumulation with break, break, 50, 100-30 the order of the day and Porge went on to register a new high break for the match, an opener of 4710 in 7/8 mins a good start - ending after a 50 span out. So the pressure was on Michael to make the semi-final with a target set and break back. He knew time was not an issue, so steady accumulation and no rash shots was his plan. Clear decision making and a mixture of 100 splits/10 splits and 50-30s took Michael beyond Porge. at the 13 minute mark. When to touch was the next question? As he approached a 2k lead things were starting to get a bit scrappy. Deciding to cut his losses and just tap down the end of the table Michael came off with 6640. Thud. The bar had gone at 16:20. First frame was 19:20, second 18:00. A sigh of relief from Michael, a look of surprise from Porge. If the bar had run to 19, Porge would have had a chance to overtake - but alas it did not. 2-1. So a brilliant deciding frame, essentially one visit a piece, as Porge had potted the remaining balls for 190, which was some contrast to the quality of the opening two frames. Michael had lost 2/2 at Roffey CC, it's fair to say he's not a big fan of that top - god only knows what Tom Pearce would think of it - but he'll be back there again to take on a certain Ricky Dewdney in just a couple of weeks time.
