Finest player never to have played for England. Oooh, that's a big claim Tommo.... no pressure on Jon now then at all! It could be an interesting talking point of who is the best player never to have played for England.... or to have never won the World Championships? I could think of quite a few, especially for the latter of those two.

Steve Mariner would come to mind in the case of Jersey Certainly some strong contenders (and great players) mentioned by Tommo and BigTJ. Nigel (14 national titles, Jersey runner-up and 3 times semi-finalist), Curt (8 national titles and 4 Jersey semi-finals) and Steve Mariner (3 national titles and 5 Jersey semi-finals) have certainly all come close to winning the world title. You could probably add to those Mark Brewster (2 times finalist), Richard Wooton, Mark James, Steven Sheard, Gareth Lloyd who have all won multiple national titles and (from before my playing days) Mark Sawyer (world record high score), Les Green (6 national titles), John Burrows (6 national titles in 36 tournaments, average 9,940), and Kevin Clark (4 national titles) into the conversation as well, all of who had brilliant records. For some "local flavour", spare a thought for the Jersey players who have also come close over the years with Graham Bisson, Nigel Ryall and Harry Barbet being runners-up 2 times each while James Jeanne, Bob King, Nick Barnett and Don Cadec also reaching the final. I am sure there could be numerous other great players who could be included in this list, it has certainly been the subject of numerous discussions in pubs over the years and the lovely thing about it is that there is no right or wrong answer the question, it is just a personal opinion and it is always nice to talk about great players in our game.

A pretty decent summary from BB Warrior there. (Graham Bisson has actually won it though - in 1982). I would add that Guernsey have a few capable of reaching the heights (Ian Champion, Bob Chapple, Tom Oliver etc) given a good run on the Jersey tables. And let's not forget the whippersnappers whose day is probably still to come - I would not be at all surprised to see Martin Cole, Phil Osborne or Joe Oakley lift the title one day in the not-too-distant future.

Best player to have not won the World Championships is.....Jimmy White!
Best to have ever not is probably a bit of a poisoned challice...not wanted but guess its a compliment.
The main thing to hope for is that there are plenty of more Jerseys to come so that a few of these names mentioned can get themselves off the list!

Thanks for the correction Tommo about Graham Bisson, I had based my comments about players from information shown on the AEBBA website (World Championships, all-time stats) although I see that record only started in 1991 so after Graham had won it. Looking at 1982 result, a few things strike me.... 7 of the 8 quarter-finalists are from Jersey (Vivien Shepherd the only exception), the highest individual leg score shown is only 6,180 and an amazing 377 entries! (Although I think that the record number of players in Jersey was 524 in 1988) How things change....
