The last time this prestigious competition was due to take place (2020) it was a victim of the fall-out following Covid. Horsham League has of course now disbanded but I have 'rescued' the perpetual trophies on behalf of original sponsors (Hall and Woodhouse) and can confirm that arrangements have been put in hand tonight for the following: Sun 1st Oct 2023 at the Inn on the Green, Ockley - Billingshurst League curtain-raiser, the KING & BARNES OPEN DOUBLES.
This has now morphed into a one-day event but provides a good opportunity to try out a new venue with possibilities for further competitions in the future. Lauren has promised to make us comfortable - the pub has lots of space and has two tables (Jean and Alan's, plus one which will have to be set up carefully beforehand). Assuming 16 pairs in the line-up, the competition should run from 12 noon to 7.30-ish. Straight knockout, 2 leg matches, 1 leg played on each of two tables. Clock trophies for winners and runners-up, further awards for semi-finalists and highest break of the day on each table. Entry will be completely free this year, and if all goes well, the Billingshurst league will be offered the competition to take on a year down the line, Hall and Woodhouse already being credited as Sponsor. Entry form HERESome blurb on the past history of the competition HEREClive T Entries received: 1. Tony Jenner & Rick Cunningham (Wor) 2. Matt Knight & Joe Oakley (Bri)
3. Michael Wilson & Joe Elleson (Red) 4. Phil Osborne & Chris Cox (Wor) 5. Jim Balchin & John Slee (Bil) 6. Martin and Rebecca Greenway (Red) 7. Stuart Mepham & Bob Hall (Bri) 8. Kevin Tunstall & Martin Cole (Wor) 9. Tony Franks & Lee Cable (Bil) 10. Dave Howlett & Keith Newman (Bil) 11. John Tidy & Dave Sands (Bil) 12. Paul Trottman & Clive Thompson (Red)(entry now closed at 12 pairs - ct 11/9/23)

Paul Trottman and I are giving it a go, so that makes 12.
I have worked out an alternative programme for 12 pairs (4 round robin groups of 3 with the group winners proceeding to semi-finals).
This will be used unless there are any more entries (up to 16) whereupon the 16 schedule will be used, with Byes if necessary.
The draw will be done on the day.

I am closing entry for this now on 12 teams. Having worked out the alternative schedule for 12 (4 groups of 3), it looks more beneficial to those taking part, as all teams are guaranteed 4 frames of b'bs - rather than the sudden death situation of a 16-pairs knockout.
The full line-up will be accredited on a souvenir programme which I can now finalise, but the draw will be performed just before the start - so if players can be there for, say, 11.45am then you can pick your own number out and we can be underway at 12 noon.
I will start a reserve list for any showing an 11th hour interest.
Cheers, tommo III

Well done to Michael Wilson and Joe Elleson on winning today, beating Kevin Tunstall and Martin Cole (no mean feat) in the final. Michael with a superb break in the second leg. Thanks to Clive for running an excellent day, our hosts looking after us very well

Thanks to Clive for organising a great event - a great couple of days at the Inn on the Green. Silent will be happy that I'm not planning on a long post, but who knows what it will turn into. From a personal point of view Joe and I had a tough start, losing our opening leg on table 1 ("the good top") to JT and Sandsy but recovered to sneak the second leg on table 2 ("the tough top"). So we had to beat Stu Mepham and Bob Hall 2-0 to progress and managed to stumble to victory on table 1 via three cracks at the break. The table 2 leg was, therefore, do or die and after Bob had gone off with 50 I'd had the chance to put the leg to bed, but 1.5k pegged meant it was anyone's game. Bobble and Stu eeked out a lead but Joe kept us in touching distance and when it came to the bar they were 390 up. Bobble mopped up a few balls leaving them 440 up with two whites down the back and the red in hand. So I was tasked with getting the two whites down but keeping the red up. First was easier, down the 30, but the second was fairly tight in the corner. I tried to get to the side of it and try to kick it out towards the 20/30 and thankfully judged it well. So red in the 200 off the cush that was throwing down like buggery, a little light petting of the black but the pace was perfect as it rolled in to give us a win by 10 points! By this point I was wearing four headbands, one per leg, and Arthur chose a fifth for the semi vs Jözil and Silent. I think Joe and I were to have progressed, so now had a free crack at getting to the final. We started on table one and JoeO went off with 450. Neutral breaks and I replied with 450. Top quality stuff. Thankfully for Joe and I we managed a further crack at the break each and between us added enough for a 3k lead going into the table 2 leg. An opening 2k and just touch was enough as the second leg resulted in much hilarity. So we'd made the final! Headband number 6 went on and once again Table 2 served up a treat, 510 start from me and 500 from Coley meant the tough work could begin. Lots of laughs as three top players "and Michael" took turns to add a little bit, with the leg finishing with Joe and I 50 up. So nothing in it. Down to table 1, KT had the break, I fully expected him to go off with enough, but the second split went wrong and he couldn't recover it, leaving the table with about 1.5k. I stepped up knowing I just had to play time to secure us the win.. thankfully this leg was by far the best I played all weekend. The only time I struggled was when on the edge of a 10/100 split (the occasions I chose the 10 were the ones that caused issues!!). I managed to go down the table two(/three?) times but recovered on each occasion without too much drama. As the time ebbed away I reached 7k with 5 mins left, time to touch. Martin tried to get the balls back but failed and after Joe's visit hands were shook! Champions!! Six headbands is clearly the charm! I'm super proud of Joe and I to put our names on this famous trophy, especially having had to beat the last two champions in the knockouts. Fair to say we were buzzing, as was young Arthur who'd been our supporter extrodinaire throughout. Great day, the victory pint on the sofa went down real smooth! (Goodnight Silent, you may sleep now!)

Thank you Clive for an excellent day and well done to Joe and Michael. A fun day with the tables there to play but offering challenges. Well done to Phil O on getting the high break on both tables, an excellent 5360 on table 2 making it look easier than most of us found it. By the feed back everyone enjoyed their day and good to see quite a few stay to watch the final. Nice venue and made very welcome by mine hosts. Food was good (roast looked lovely). Plenty of banter and good to see a mix of leagues represented

Good summaries on the day so far and it was gratifying to see a general air of enjoyment and competitive sportsmanship. The idea of the souvenir programme seemed to work, players needing minimal prompting to start their games and no trouble finding scorers. As a result we were able to keep to within 15 mins of schedule. As mentioned by TJ there was a good mix of players, with 4 pairs from Billingshurst, 3 from Worthing, 2 from Brighton and 3 from Redhill. The groups as they came out in the draw were evenly matched, with Groups B, C and D won convincingly but high drama in Group A where Michael and Joe had a 'winner takes all' match with Stuey and Bob, with Michael cool under pressure at the end as he described. At this point he must have known it was going to be his day. The Inn On The Green is both spacious and comfortable, and we were looked after well by Lauren and Julie. They in turn were thrilled with how the weekend went, with some of their regulars captivated by the high standard of play. Several commented on the suitability for further competitions, for example the BIOC Ladies which could be fitted in on the two pub tables - or even for something bigger if AEBBA tables were available. Although many view Ockley as 'out in the sticks' it would be central for the Ladies, with Oxon/Bucks in the north, Sussex in the south and Redhill in the east. Anyway, this will be a Billingshurst League event from now on, but sadly this was the final year of Hall & Woodhouse (ex-K & B) sponsorship as they are left with no remaining pubs which have bar billiards. As a last gesture they agreed to fund a re-plating of the winners' cup, but it worked out more cost-effective to purchase a new one, which is a perfect match for the runners-up cup. Finally, congratulations to the prize winners, especially Michael and Joe who I know are tickled pink to be added to our hall of fame. And young Arthur is so proud of his dad:

Congratulations to Michael & Joe on winning this event at the first attempt. I missed Michael potting the red in the 200 on table 2 you wouldn't think it was possible. Congratulations also to KT & Martin on reaching the Final, they also played the day in the spirit of making it a fun day with the right amount of banter.
The Inn on The Green really looked after us along with running a busy Sunday trading for the regular customers. A big well done to Clive who gave up his weekend to run both events & kept a dialog going with Hall & Woodhouse, who eventually funded the cost of the replacement trophy (which matches the R/up perfectly) where most other organisations would of been a flat no way. As has been said it was good to see a mix of players from several Leagues.
The balls in Billingshurst's court now to keep it going.
