Nomads | 2 | v | 3 | MVC A | Abbey* | 1550 | - | 2220 | Colin | Dave | 1370 | - | 4080 | *Benny | Jim* | 3130 | - | 1150 | Neil | JP | 1770 | - | 2380 | *Chris | James* | 2820 | - | 100 | Grahame |
The Presidents Cup got underway last night but the Nomads suffered for the second consecutive week at the hands of a Merstham side. With the draw done, Abbey expressed her surprise at being picked first as this "never happens". It was, in fact, the first time Abbey had opened up since February and the lack of G&Ts in the system may have been an issue! Colin and Abbey were close throughout, with Colin pulling out a 500 lead but Abbey got the break back with a couple of minutes to go! Sadly the potential glory was too much as the break was missed (not for the last time this evening) and Colin closed out the match well. 0-1 Next up the two stars of this evenings show, Benny and Dave, faced off in what could be the crucial match of the night. Benny left his first one up short and Dave pounced immediately with an excellent clear and started building up a lead. But then the turning point, with the Horley table being uphill Dave didn't quite have enough puff on the split and the white stopped hanging over the 100. Dave tried to hit it off the side cushion but, like almost everyone on their first attempt, he went too high and missed the ball. The game was now in the balance and after a battle Benny was the first to get them back. An brilliant break of 3k using the "Jersey method" put the game beyond Dave and left Merstham just a frame from glory. 0-2 Third up the glorious Jim had to take out stand-in captain Neil, and things didn't look too promising when he missed the first break and left the table with 50. Neil couldn't get the balls back though and Jim took advantage mid-way through the game to clear and add a decisive 2k. There was still time though and Neil did get the balls back but the one-up being left short put the final nail in the coffin. 1-2 So the Nomads needed one more frame to make it to a decider and JP would have to do it against the break. Chris opened up with 700 but JP would never let him get away, each time Chris opened a gap it was closed back down. The crucial point though was when JP did a lot of good work clearing up an awkward table (with six balls behind the two 50s!!) but one tricky shot too many came along as he pegged a crucial 300 points to get level. Chris kept his lead and, similarly to the first leg, mopped up the last few balls to put the result beyond question after the bar went. 1-3 So the match was over, but no matter the dead rubber went ahead with James easing past Grahame who had just returned from Tenerife in time to play this game. Rumour has it that he's now on a flight back, much nicer temperature over there! 2-3 So an excellent win for Merstham VC A, with a couple of tight games going their way. Jim commented that he thought the break was lovely and that there should have been an easy 10k on there, Jim you're verging on Jemima delusions there mate, unless you meant that the overall score for each team should be about 10k, in which case you're basically bob on!

South Park A 5 Salfords A 0
John 5180 Bobbie 1040 Dave 4750 Les 1320 Laurie 3180 Yvonne 1380 Junkie 3870 Sheila 780 Ricky 6830 Terri 980
First up me and Bobbie and my break. On I went and off I came first split too fat. Plenty of goes and I got Them back 1.5 k then pegged them. A few points each and I managed to get them back again and fortunately Made a few. 1-0
DC and Les on next. Les off early and Dave with a few small visits accumulated a good lead. Not a lot of luck For Les and Dave ran out a good winner.
Third up Yvonne and Loz. Laurie's break but soon off. Yvonne cleared the table and was very unlucky not to Make more. Eventually Laurie cleared the balls and was happy to make a decent break to take the leg and Match.
Next on Junkie and Sheila and another scrappy encounter. Plenty of goes but hard work. Junkie keeping his Nose in front with some old school 50 play. 4-0
Last but not least Ricky and Terri. Terri not having much luck but Ricky struggling also. Ricky next to get them Back and going well only to come off on a thick split. The game got bogged down for a time till Ricky got The hang of a tricky top.
A fun night as always with Sheila and the Salfords A . Great to see Bobbie and les still playing thanks to the Salfords team.

MVC A 3, Old Oak 1 at Salfords (LH table) * Neil 3530, Rebecca 480 Chris 2240, *Clive 4650 *Graeme 1670, Paul 1140 Jeff 3130, *Nick 450 - and that was that, Charlie relieved that he no longer faced the prospect of playing two frames ! *Benny 4430, Charlie 920 in the dead rubber.
Games 2 and 3 were hotly contested: I took half the game to get going, Chris seemingly having all the answers. We stood level before my last visit, and it took a 2k and touch to keep us in the hunt. Graeme and Paul had a similarly close game, just 50 in it when the bar went and there were a couple of difficult leaves. Some positive play and an element of luck won it for Graeme.
A solid performance from the victors and they're a nice bunch so we wish them well in the Semi-Finals.

Horley CC 0 Spcc A 5
Played at the Jolly Bricks.
Luke 400 Dave 4430 Roland 1370 John 6240 Graham 2020 Ricky 8750 Alex 2190 Laurie 7220 Nev 2530 Dick 2890
First up Luke and Dc and Lukes break. Unfortunately Luke off early but Dave unable to take advantage. Eventually dave cleared the Balls and made a few. Game then got bogged down with a ball right on the left peg. Everyone decided to leave it until everything got Clearned and Luke drew the short straw. Dc balls back and one good Break sealed it.
Game 2 me and Roly. My break but off on 500. Plenty of goes till I got it back again and made a couple. Roly next to clear the balls But unfortunately put the break down 4 times giving me it back. 4k and touch was enough. 2-0
Next up Graham and Ricky. Graham's break but soon off. A few shots more and Rick cleared up. 5k and touch put the frame out of reach And gave us the match. Ricky added some more late on.
Next up Alex and Loz. Our break and Loz off with 3k. Alex struggling a bit to settle but eventually got going only to break down. A bit of Tip tap and loz balls back sealed it.
Last but not least Sub Dick and Nev. A good even game with Dick making enough at the end pinched it.
A lovely evening with the Horley lads as always and great to see the Bricks top playing well (thanks Ian)

Presidents cup Semi Final. Played on Salfords R/H top.
Mvc A 0 Spcc A 5
* Benny 1540 Ricky 8920 Colin 910 * Dick 6800 * Neill 1090 Tracy 5760 Jeff 0 * Laurie 5730 * Chris 2670 John 8600
First up Benny and Ricky. Benny on first but a break shot where the white slid by meant he was soon off. Ricky next to get them back and going ok till a mistimed split and off. A few more goes each and Ricky cleared up and no mistake second time with 6k break. A good first leg.
Next on Dick and Colin. Dicks break off and going ok till a whipped 50 and off. Colin struggling with the Top Dick break back and 2k break gave him a good lead. A bit of Top of the table stuff before one last Break sealed it 2-0
Game 3 saw Neil play in form Skipper. Neil's break and like so many tonight going along confidently and Then off. A few shots each and Tracy got the balls back. A very good 3k put her in a good position and A few more at the end was enough for frame and match 3-0.
On fourth Jeff and Laurie. Loz to break and off with a steady 2k. Plenty of goes but not much scoring with Small breaks each. Jeff ending up late on with a tight one up the middle unluckily clipped the black and Effectively frame was over.
Last but not least Chris and myself. Chris with the break and once more a confident start and a bit unlucky To break down. For myself I was struggling a bit to find my rhythm. A level game at 2k each when I managed To clear Them. Much better and a 6k was enough.
A lovely evening with The Merstham lads very graciously wishing us the best for the final. Daves top played Lovely . Plenty of good catch up Chat with Neil and Jeff. Benny his usual chirpy self. Pleased to have made the final.
