Old Oak | 1 | v | 4 | Nomads | Nick* | 240 | - | 6030 | Max | Clive | 2420 | - | 5860 | *Jim | Paul* | 70 | - | 5780 | Michael | Martin* | 6420 | - | 1700 | Dave | Charlie | 0 | - | 1600 | *Abbey |
The league season kicked off with the Old Oak hosting the Nomads on their newly resurfaced top - a venture into the unknown for the visitors. First up Nick made a good start, racking up a break of 1.2k, but was unfortunate to fell the first peg of the night which lost him his score. Max wasn't able to get the balls back initially, but after a couple of goes he did. Unfortunately for him his pace was very much for the Garland, and his one-up was too hard, spinning out first time. A little bit more of a ding-dong went on but Max showed why he is considered a hot prospect to clear and rack up a lovely break of 4210 to put the leg to bed. The drama wasn't over, though, as Max decided to flirt with fate, accidentally pushing a white up the table to the 200, it was clear it would make the hole - but would it knock over the black?? Not quite, it safely dropped down the 200 and the crowd could breathe! 0-1 After all that drama, the Billingshurst rivals Clive and Jemima took centre stage. After Jemima came off early on the break, Clive made the early running with a 2.4k break, but a missed split saw him leave the table. What happened then was rather impressive.. as the fight down the back raged, Clive managed not to bank any more points while Jemima was starting to find her flow. Balchin Senior once again found her mojo, getting the balls back and adding a 3k break at the death to clinch victory - what a wonderful start to the season for the joyful Jemima! 0-2 So the Nomads could get the job done early, and it looked like they would have a good chance with Paul leaving the one-up short. Michael couldn't get the balls back though and so a long old battle of the back ensued. All eight balls were in play at one point, but with the scores at 800-1000 and the table getting clearer it was still anyone's game. Paul, though, threw a spanner in the works as he took Max's approach of going for the 200, just this time the white had a little more pace, lipped round and took out the black. Not long after Michael got the break back and he played out the last few minutes for 4 and a bit k to make the game look far more one-sided than it was. 0-3 With the win confirmed the Nomads could look for a whitewash, but Martin was having none of that. The table seemed to be getting trickier and Martin struggled with the white coming inside the 50 on the break. He'd only racked up a k and a half when he came off and Dave flicked his magic wand to clear up first time and set about the chase. That midas touch disappeared though as, like Martin, the BBWizard struggled with the break and was off early. Both players then had to grind at the back, but it was Martin who got the balls back and boy did he dig deep. With a k lead on the board a very workman like break of 3k with several excellent recoveries got Martin past the winning post - an excellent win despite flirting with the white peg on his final shot! 1-3 So now Michael's nemisis, Charlie, faced the rather G&T heavy Balchin Junior and Abs used this as an excellent excuse to miss the break. Once again the battle at the back raged and it was Abbey who made all the running, finding lots of good shots to build up a 700 or so lead. Charlie got the black peg memo - sadly for him - and when trying to clear a ball behind the 10 he clipped the black over, confirming the leg would go to Abbey. As the G&T continued to flow, Abs took the final leg to give the Nomads an excellent opening day win! 1-4 So a very enjoyable evening down the Oak on their newly reclothed table. I thought it played very well and I expect to see some good scores on it over the course of the season. Good to be back and the Nomads will be delighted to get a win under their belt as they seek to see how far up Division A they can go!

Quercus 1, Not-So-Mads 4 A comprehensive victory fanfare there from the visiting captain. Now from the point of view of the vanquished......
Put simply, apart from our captain, we were very poor: two black pegs (Paul and Charlie) when their games were evenly balanced; an abject failure by me to score anything in the last 15 minutes, and a "rabbit in the headlights" moment from Nick after his bright start.
But the Nomads set about their task with great panache, as the first three scores will witness, and they could turn out to be a great threat to the long-term League domination of MVC and SPCC.

Spcca 4 Mvc A 1
Ricky 10180 Jeff 1420 Dick 2640 Benny 5450 Dave 7060 Neil 2580 John 6870 Colin 2900 Tracy 2390 Grahame 1520
First up Ricky and Jeff. Jeff off with the break and soon broke down. Ricky first to get the balls back And a very good 5k and touch gave him a great start. Jeff struggling a bit Ricky cleared the balls and a replica 5k break and frame over.
Dick and Benny on next and Benny off with 2.5k. Both players battling to get the balls Dick was next to clear Them but couldn't capitalize. Plenty more goes each but with Benny playing some steady stuff one more good Break was enough to seal the win 1-1
Dc and Neil on next and Neill riding his luck off with 2k. Unusually Dave struggling to get the balls back added A few. Eventually Dc cleared up and made a useful 4k break. A bit of play up the top and one more good Break Was enough for a good win.
4th up myself and Colin ( we always seem to draw each other). Colins break but soon pegged his opener and Left me a good chance. Balls back but I was struggling to leave a sensible one up. Plenty of 50 play and splits Ɓut I kept going to make 6k and touch. Colin made a few but I cleared up and thought maybe a few more but no. Col finally playing better made a break to the Bar.
Last but not least Tracy and Grahame and plenty of goes with the game getting a bit bogged down. A leg that Could have gone either way but skipper sneaked it.
Another good win for us over a steady mvc A ( twice in 3 days ) and a great start to 2024 gaining top slot of The league!!!.
