With the last week of the season upon us the Redhill mob travelled to Kent in what was the "dead rubber tie". Tunny Wells were guaranteed 5th whatever happened and Redhill could (in theory) jump from fourth to second, but that would be relying on results from elsewhere.
To start the evening both captains fancied a crack at each other and Pete was making the early running before leaving the one-up short at about 2k. Captain Col was straight over to the table but it was clear that the lager tops hadn't kicked in this early in the evening and he was off before Gary could take another sip. Pete didn't fancy giving Col another go and racked up 7k before tap tapping for the opening leg. 1-0
Next up was one of the suber-sub-Kemsleys (Martin in this case) against the in form Michael, has he mentioned to you he made 20k? Anyway Michael with the break was in no mood for a battle and he was rattling along with a perfect 100 splitting break. At 10.3k a voice said "good hit". Having gone in on the whip for the first time Michael was in a rebellious mood and got another 100 split. at 11k the lurking voice was a bit louder "GOOD HIT". Michael tapped for touch, keeping his score. A couple of friendly minutes at the back of the table saw Martin make scores, but it was Michael who got them back and played it out for another 5k. 1-1
Third on was the second super-sub-Kemsley (Paula) of the night in what turned into a fun game. Sleezy opened up with a couple of k and added a few k here and there throughout the game, but it was the Max Burt-style talking to the balls from Paula, particularly if they were within a foot of a peg, that provided excellent entertainment. A fun game, but another leg with the break in the ledger. 1-2
Next up was the mighty Fitz, and Captain Col decided to turn up the pressure by pitting the mega Jonesy against him. It was expected that Gerry would make 6k before finding a way to miss, but he clearly fancied an early trip back to his pint. DJ had just turned away having had his look at the table when Gerry left his one-up short at just over 1k! Dave was clinical, clearing the balls and serenely getting to 8.5k before tap-tapping. Gerry finished of showing what might have been. 1-3
So Redhill were now firmly in control and it was master DC who was given the task of finishing the job. His opponent had scarred Redhill before - a wonderful deciding leg from Bryan had put pay to Redhill's title ambitions - and the aura of Bryan appeared to loom large as DC came off at 2k after battling with the table. Bryan looked like he'd punish DC and he accumulated steadily before a mistake and he was off at just over 4k. DC required four invitations on Tuesday night to get over the line, but this time the second letter posted through his door was enough as he made 3k to take the leg and the match for Redhill. 1-4
At this point the authors memory becomes uncharacteristically faded, a very enjoyable night on the whip meant his attention on the billiards was next to nil and could make for an interesting last couple of reports...
Sixth on Gazza took some of his footballing wizardry and played the table with great skill. The set piece break, one-up, split was flying in and when he was told he couldn't catch Michael's score it even brought a tear to his eye. 1-5
Finally Vinny and Geoff... honestly I've got no idea. Geoff seemed to be going quite well but apparently was off having whipped a ten split. His score seemed convincing enough and on the basis of that he can be awarded the win. 1-6
An excellent evening with some fantastic story-telling, great chat with friends and no-one forgetting what there opponent had scored. First time for me at TunWells and boy was it a beauty - best top I've played on this season. A lovely spread of food on the bar, I do love a samosa, rounded off the evening well with Redhill sneaking into third spot in the league.
Away from the Redhillians, I must congratulate Brighton on winning the title - a brilliant season. Perhaps young "Silent" can use that to relieve his Merstham scars, watching master DC ruthlessly chase him down in week two of the season.
