Get those pencils put, here we go again... ;)
1 If the perimiter of a square is one yard, what is its area ?
2 Which is the greater, 6% of 9 - or 7% of 8 ?
3 If a right-angled triangle has one side 6 inches long, and another side 10 inches long, what is the length of the third side ?
4 How many girls would stretch from London to Brighton ? (4pts for correct answer)
5 What is the lowest number into which all the numbers from 1 to 10 can be divided ?
6 When two boys, John and Peter, stand on a scale together it shows 14 stone 4 lbs. Peter who weighs 7 stone 8 lbs gets off and Jim gets on. Jim and John together weigh 15 stone 10 lbs . How heavy is Jim ?
7 At a conference the delegates passed a motion by a majority of 320 votes. If 2% of the delegates had changed sides the result would have been a tie. How many delegates were present ?
8 What is half of two-thirds of three-quarters of four ?
9 A man is offered a job at £10k pa to be paid each half-year. He can have a rise of £300 p.a. or a £100 rise every half-year. Which should he choose ?
10 A square has an area of 16 square inches. What is the radius of the biggest circle that will fit inside it ?
11 Which two numbers have a product of 48 and a sum of 19 ?
12 What, in present money, is the difference between 30 old pence and 30 new pence ?
13 Take the sum of all the whole numbers up to 5 from the sum of all the numbers up to 10. What is the answer ?
14 What is 101 squared minus 99 squared ?
2pts per answer except where indicated otherwise. Good luck !

3) Using a 3,4,5 triangle the remaining side must 8 inches long
5) I will take a punt at 362880 which is 1x2x3....x10
8) 1
10) 2 inches
11) 16 and 3

Thought I'd get a tickle from Nigel. ;)
3) 8) 10) and 11) are all perfectly correct, 2pts for each makes 8pts. And a bonus point for 3) which required knowledge of Pythagoras' theorum (square on the hypoteneuse, etc).
For number 5) the answer is a lot less, only a four-figure number. (If you think about it, both 2 and 4 can divide into the number you have given).

12. 17.5 p (30d = 2s and sixpence = 12.5 p, therfore = 30p - 12.5p = 17.5p)

1 ¼ yrd squared (I don’t really know ye olde measurements)
2 1% of 9 is 0.9 so times by 6 is 5.4 1% 0f 8 is 0.8 so times by 7 is 5.6 so it’s 7%
7 320 votes is 52% trial and error. 1% = 6 52 x 6 = 312 1% = 7 52 x 7 = 364 1% = 6.2 52 x 6.2 = 322.4 1% = 6.1 52 x 6.1 = 317.2 6.2 x 100 = 620 people.
I think I’m missing something here.
9 A half year is twice in a year, which is a £200 increase p.a. So £300 p.a. is the better choice.
13 1+2+3+4+5=15 and since you would only have to take 15 away from the sum of 1 – 10 you’d only have to do the following addition. 6+7+8+9+10= 40 Answer 40.
14 What is 101 squared minus 99 squared ? 101 101 x 101 0000 10100 10201
99 99 x 891 8910 9801
10201 – 9801 400
Gods I feel like I’m taking Math GCSE all over again!

Hi Tommo
Q2 6% of 9 is 0.54 and 7% of 8 is 0.56 so 7% of 8 is the greater
Q5 2520??
Q13 70
Q14 400
thanks Tony (still thinking about Q4!)

Hem Brewster -
SEE ME AFTERWARDS ! ;D
Well now, 1 ¼ yrd squared (I don’t really know ye olde measurements) You're not wrong, but you didn't go on to give the correct answer which is 81 square inches. 1yd =36 inches, so 36/4 = 9, and 9x9=81. Good enough for 1pt only.
2 1% of 9 is 0.9 so times by 6 is 5.4 1% 0f 8 is 0.8 so times by 7 is 5.6 so it’s 7% I know there's such a thing as inflation, but when I was at school 1% of 9 was 0.09 and 1% of 8 was 0.08 so the answers to compare come out at 0.54 and 0.56. ;D Never mind, you found the correct answer, so 2pts.
7 320 votes is 52% trial and error. 1% = 6 52 x 6 = 312 1% = 7 52 x 7 = 364 1% = 6.2 52 x 6.2 = 322.4 1% = 6.1 52 x 6.1 = 317.2 6.2 x 100 = 620 people. I think I’m missing something here. No, it doesn't add up, does it as 2% of 620 delegates would be 12.4 ? 0.5pt bonus only for a brave effort.
9 A half year is twice in a year, which is a £200 increase p.a. So £300 p.a. is the better choice. Remind me if I ever get a pub to employ barmaids like you ! ;D Let's compare the salaries in six-monthly increments, and see what we finish up with after 3 years: a) £300pa rise. 5000+5000=10000;5150+5150=10300;5300+5300=10600. b) £100 half-yearly rise. 5000+5100=10100;5200+5300=10500;5400+5500=10900. So £100 half-yearly is the most advantageous choice !
13 1+2+3+4+5=15 and since you would only have to take 15 away from the sum of 1 – 10 you’d only have to do the following addition. 6+7+8+9+10= 40 Answer 40. Correct, well done, 2pts + 1pt bonus for showing working-out.
14 What is 101 squared minus 99 squared ? 101 101 x 101 0000 10100 10201 99 99 x 891 8910 9801 10201 – 9801 400 Correct, but there is an easier way to work it out which I'll show when answering Tony. But you get 2pts + 1pt for long-hand workings. 9.5pts to the Hem Brewster !

Now for Tony, whose answer was lodged 16 mins after Hem's, but knowing how these things work, he wouldn't have had the benefit of seeing Hem's answer while working out a long one of his own. So it's accepted in good faith.
Q2 6% of 9 is 0.54 and 7% of 8 is 0.56 so 7% of 8 is the greater Correct, 2.5pts as it's slightly more precise than Hem's.
Q5 2520?? Correct, 2pts.
Q13 70. You've added them together Tony ! 55-15 = 40.
Q14 400 Correct, 2pts. Quick way of doing it: "The difference between the squares of two numbers is equal to the product of their sum and their difference". (Tommo's law ! ;D ) So, (101+99) x (101-99); 200 x 2 = 400.
Clue for Q4) - Idiomatically. 6.5pts for Tony's effort.

Well - 531 'old girls' entered the London to Brighton veteran car rally this year...... ::) Tony That would be Euphemistically rather than idiomatically, Tony. These are more likely to be young girls. ;)

Okay, number 4) was a bit of a tease. The answer is 53 miles stretch from London to Brighton. Or 53 'misses'. As we all know, "a miss is as good as a mile". ;D
2pts are awarded to Barbelman for a good shot at the answer. H&J only gain a bonus if they can demonstrate a way in which the answer "2" can fit the question...............
Only the 'delegates' question is left.

H&J only gain a bonus if they can demonstrate a way in which the answer "2" can fit the question...............there was a thriller called London to Brighton that came out 2006 i think that starred 2 girls in the lead roles..........

First of all, H&J have come up with a convincing argument for having earned the other 2pts from question 4) so so be it.
Which leaves Barbelman's stab at Q7), thus : 16000 (which is 320 x 100/2) You are so close ! But have over-estimated by double, the answer is 8,000. (Fits the question thus - 2% of 8000 = 160, so 4160 yays, 3840 nays and a majority of 320). 1.5pts as you scored an 'inner' rather than the bullseye.
Quiz ended thus: 1 Barbelman 10pts 2 Hem Brewster 9.5pts 3 NigelS 9pts 4 H&J 7pts
