Easter Pop Quiz II
As tommo’s first Easter pop quiz only lasted for half the duration, here’s another one to spread over Easter Sunday and Monday.
Much is made of having the Christmas Number One, here you have to identify the Easter Number Ones from the period 1980 to 1994.
Easter jumps around, and some ridiculously-easy clues are given to help you in your quest for, in each case, the title and the artiste – for which, 1pt each. Bonuses available for extra (must be relevant) information.
1 6th April 1980 – This band were able to preserve their regular chart appearances of three years’ standing with their first number one.
2 19th April 1981 – The UK’s first Eurovision winner since 1976.
3 11th April 1982 – German band created by Oliver Bendt and produced by Frank Farlon, also of Boney M fame.
4 3rd April 1983 – A first number one for this band, named after a character in Barbarella, with their 7th hit single.
5 22nd April 1984 – Motown’s best-ever-selling single at the time, overtaking the one which this artiste had also written and sung lead vocal on.
6 7th April 1985 - This single contained the lyric “she’ll get a hold on you believe it – like no other, before you know it you’ll be on your knees !”
7 30th March 1986 – Title track of a film starring Eddie O’Connell, Patsy Kensit (as Crepe Suzette) and the singer of the title track. You can earn bonus points for naming each of the other three stars from the world of pop.
8 19th April 1987 – A multi-artiste revival of an old song, instigated by the Sun Newspaper to aid a disaster fund.
9 3rd April 1988 – A second chart hit after 4 years for this UK reggae group: their profile was raised sufficiently for them to make a recording and Wembley appearance with Cliff Richard.
10 26th March 1989 – Despite a major PR kerfuffle over the aborted use of this song as a Pepsi-Cola promotion because the sponsor felt it to be too controversial, this went on to become a No.1 hit globally.
11 15th April 1990 – First-ever rap-based track to hit no.1 in the UK: used a sample from Disco singer Jocelyn Brown’s song I’m Gonna Get You.
12 31st March 1991 – A double-sided hit for this pair of comedians, whose royalties were waived for the aid of Comic relief.
13 19th April 1992 – The third hit for this East Grinstead-based band: it stayed at number one for four weeks.
14 11th April 1993 – This re-release from a Scottish band made it to the top on the strength of a TV advert for tampons !
15 3rd April 1994 – A rather twee Charleston-based sample which created a whole new dance craze.
No more than THREE answers per person in any one 3-hour period, please, to give everyone a chance. Good luck !
