In response to another thread, below is the standard pattern for odd numbers of teams in a division/league
For seven
Wk 1 Wk 2 Wk 3 Wk 4 Wk 5 Wk 6 Wk 7 2 v 1 1 v 7 7 v 6 6 v 5 5 v 4 4 v 3 3 v 2 7 v 3 6 v 2 5 v 1 4 v 7 3 v 6 2 v 5 1 v 4 4 v 6 3 v 5 2 v 4 1 v 3 7 v 2 6 v 1 5 v 7 5 bye 4 bye 3 bye 2 bye 1 bye 7 bye 6 bye
Wk 8 Wk 9 Wk 10 Wk 11 Wk 12 Wk 13 Wk 14 1 v 2 7 v 1 6 v 7 5 v 6 4 v 5 3 v 4 2 v 3 3 v 7 2 v 6 1 v 5 7 v 4 6 v 3 5 v 2 4 v 1 6 v 4 5 v 3 4 v 2 3 v 1 2 v 7 1 v 6 7 v 5 5 bye 4 bye 3 bye 2 bye 1 bye 7 bye 6 bye
or for nine
Wk 1 Wk 2 Wk 3 Wk 4 Wk 5 Wk 6 Wk 7 Wk 8 Wk 9 1 v 9 9 v 8 8 v 7 7 v 6 6 v 5 5 v 4 4 v 3 3 v 2 2 v 1 8 v 2 7 v 1 6 v 9 5 v 8 4 v 7 3 v 6 2 v 5 1 v 4 9 v 3 3 v 7 2 v 6 1 v 5 9 v 4 8 v 3 7 v 2 6 v 1 5 v 9 4 v 8 6 v 4 5 v 3 4 v 2 3 v 1 2 v 9 1 v 8 9 v 7 8 v 6 7 v 5 5 bye 4 bye 3 bye 2 bye 1 bye 9 bye 8 bye 7 bye 6 bye
Wk 10 Wk 11 Wk 12 Wk 13 Wk 14 Wk 15 Wk 16 Wk 17 Wk 18 9 v 1 8 v 9 7 v 8 6 v 7 5 v 6 4 v 5 3 v 4 2 v 3 1 v 2 2 v 8 1 v 7 9 v 6 8 v 5 7 v 4 6 v 3 5 v 2 4 v 1 3 v 9 7 v 3 6 v 2 5 v 1 4 v 9 3 v 8 2 v 7 1 v 6 9 v 5 8 v 4 4 v 6 3 v 5 2 v 4 1 v 3 9 v 2 8 v 1 7 v 9 6 v 8 5 v 7 5 bye 4 bye 3 bye 2 bye 1 bye 9 bye 8 bye 7 bye 6 bye
The pattern is the same for any number of odd teams as each team moves diagonally down/up the fixtures as each week passes. No teams with adjacent numbers are ever both home. To get the next even number up you just carefully add the extra team. You then check for matched pairs of numbers. You cannot have a perfect fixture lst with an even number of teams (unless you add a bye) The half way changeover is always a problem, but the basic list is easy. Click here for a fixture list generator. This appears to work very well, but you have the basic method above if the link goes. Type in the number of teams (not names if you have clashes), then see which teams are never home together and apply the names. Sav

Hi Ossie
Hastings must be used to playing 8 teams from 5 venues, Eastbourne has got 5 teams from three venues and its got Nige a bit stumped on how to fit the fixtures in without double booking venues, looks like we will have to play a few games on different days.
Anyone got any ideas on a fixture format to solve Niges dilemma, i might have put this as a CODEBREAKER problem for Tommo to get his old grey matter working again.. now that he's getting his supplements regularly ::)

Hastings only had 4 venues up till now, BTW, the Anchor and the Plough being 'new'.

Five teams from three venues is a standard fixture list unless I am missing something.

Five teams from three venues is a standard fixture list unless I am missing something. Sav. Agree, providing one venue doesn't have a third team ! Otherwise 5 teams, 2 double ups = less than 50% = okay. Gandalf obviously got round whatever problem he had, as he's since published the fixtures !

Hi Sav & Tommo
Thanks for your comments, our fixtures are published but we have four matches to postpone as both pub teams are at home on same day, never had any input in fixtures so definitely not my thing.
Sounds to me like you both know how to resolve this, be good if you could advise how to tweak our current fixture list, the shaded items are currently due to be re-arranged.

Hi Sav & Tommo,
Now that i know there should be a solution I've now got the focus required and have come up with the following:-
1. Interchange HRWB v Hurst Arms 13/09/11 with Hurst Arms v HRW B 25/10/11 2. Interchange 7 Sisters A v Hurst Arms 20/09/11 with Hurst Arms V 7 Sisters A 08/11/11 3. Interchange HRW A v 7 Sisters A 10/01/12 with 7 Sisters A v HRW A 20/03/12 4. Interchange 7 Sisters B v HRW B 24/01/12 with HRW B v 7 Sisters B 03/04/12
sorted!!!

never had any input in fixtures so definitely not my thing. Glad it's resolved Gandalf and just a note for the future then......................... If you take the Horsham fixture list as a guide, this follows a standard grid for 14 teams, all playing all. Before naming the teams which will fit the grid, line them up 7 on one side and 7 on the other on a scrap pad. It will be noted on studying the grid, that certain numbers are 'opposites' , for instance when 7 is at home 13 is away, and vice-versa. 6 is the 'opposite' to 12; 5 the opposite to 11; 4 the opposite to 10; 3 the opposite to 9; 2 the opposite to 8; and finally 1 is the opposite to 14. All you have to do then is, where you have two teams from the same venue, allocate them opposite numbers - then they will never both be at home or away at the same time. In the case of the Horsham fixture list (newly published for this season by IanG), the two Roffey teams occupy 3 and 9; the two Stout House teams 5 and 11; and the two Windmill teams 7 and 13. This concept applies for a grid of any size: for as few as 4 teams; or, (as we once had in Billingshurst), as many as 18 teams. Simples ! ;)

Hi Tommo, Thanks for your efforts, i'm sure it's easy in practice, will pass on to nige for future reference regs cs You're welcome. To be fair to the Hastings, as we have been using their thread, I am transferring this and other posts on the subject over to the Help and Support board, where Sav started a thread called "Fixture Lists" back in 2008..........
