I hope I'm not re-opening a can of worms here but I've just been reading an old thread from last summer about this idea and it didn't seem very conclusive. I read everyones point of view on the pros and cons of holding a masters event but the discussion just seemed to stop. Obviously I'm not bringing this up for the current season but its something that could be aimed at for future years. I know I am only in my first mid-sussex season and as mentioned in the previous thread a masters event can be seen as elitist, but what about holding, as suggested, a so to speak, lower div masters? Eg the top 16 in the rankings go into the Masters and the next 16 into the Lower Div Masters, with the stipulation that only Div 1 players can enter the latter of the two. Also, if, by chance, a highly capable div 1 player (by that I mean someone who should probably be a premier player!) manages to get into the lower masters they should be handicapped for every point their average goes over 4k for example (thats a figure I have just plucked out of thin air by the way).
Anyway, just some ideas I'm throwing out there. Please don't flame me, I'm not trying to start some controversial shouting match, I'm just keen to see if this could be a reality for the future or not.

I'm fairly sure that plans are afoot to stage one, H, - and this season ! But confirmation is needed from someone in the know - ie a Committee member. I don't think I'm giving away any trade secrets by saying this ! ;)

I am pleased to say that this has been given the definite green light now by the Committee....... just waiting for Competitions Secretary to be able to confirm the date, venue and availability of the tables. 8-)
The competition will be open to the Top 16 Players from last year, with players below that as reserves in the event that some players may not be available (or willing) to play. Matches will be on a knock-out basis over 2 legs, each player having the break in 1 game.
These were the Top 30 players at the end of last season.......
1. Kevin Hall (Hurst A) 2. Andy Farmer-Wright (Brewers Droops) 3. Dave Ingram (Hurst A) 4. Steve King (Hurst B) 5. Clive Thompson (Handcross Z) 6. Neil Burchell (Greyhound) 7. Derek Taylor (CKRBL) 8. Shaun Morris (St Francis) 9. Roy Wells (Hurst A) 10. Richard Jeffrey (Brewers Droops) 11. Graham Sparksman (Brewers Droops) 12. Darrell Skinner (Hurst B) 13. Pete Edwards (CKRBL) 14. Norman Cragg (Watermill A) 15. Geoff Parsons (Plough) 16. Ros Appleby (Sportsman) 17. Peter Burchell (Greyhound) 18. Colin Mansfield (White Horse) 19. Pete Hall (Hurst A 20. Mark Coles (CKRBL) 21. Chris Little (St Francis) 22. Graham Daniels (Handcross Z) 23. Trevor Rees (Greyhound) 24. Lorraine Hall (Brewers Droops) 25. Des Gasson (Plough) 26. Ted Stringer (CKRBL) 27. Mick Holmwood (Handcross Z) 28. Adam Bateup (Brewers Bravos) 29. Chris Kirkham (Hurst B) 30. Steve Smith (Windmill)
It is hoped that the Masters Final will be played on Finals night. 8-)

Surely if it is to be played on Finals night it should be the top16 from the current year ???
No league that I know of has a Masters that is a year out of date.
Perhaps it should be re-named Past Masters

I'll answer this for Q......
Trophies were put up at the start of this season by a benefactor with the intention to use it for the qualifiers from last year, thus in its first year of existence it is the 2008/09 competition.
It could have taken place some time during the season but the venue lined up (the Sportsman) fell through.
The 2009/10 competition will be for the top players from this season which still has six weeks to go.

Just a quick query then - will next years (or rather THIS years) masters competition be brought forward to bring it back into sync?

Just a quick query then - will next years (or rather THIS years) masters competition be brought forward to bring it back into sync? That would make sense H...... but availability of tables, dates & venues don't make it easy to arrange an additional competition. One possibility would be to run something at Hurst Club the night before the Sussex Individual Competitions take place (assuming SCBBA would allow it?) as the tables & venue would already be in place...... ???

Getting the first ever competition up and running always takes extra effort in the planning - a fact I can vouch for in connection with the Surrey Open.
So yes H, that is the intention, but let's give the committee a vote of confidence on this one and be grateful that it's going to happen.
Great idea when to stage the second one, by the way, Warrior. ;)

It isn't a critisism of you, just an honest personal view of how I feel on the matter.
