Before providing any details of the result or scores from our match, I would like to offer my complete apologies to our opponents for the disgrace of a venue that the Eight Bells proved to be tonight. >:( >:(
As soon as the match got under way, the juke box was turned up to full discotheque levels from the 2 speakers that are located in the fairly small room that the table is in...... 3 polite requests to turn the music down were completely ignored by the staff and when they eventually did turn it down (an hour after the first request was made), the locals made their feelings clear about bar billiards interrupting the music. >:( >:(
With the Juke Box blaring, the locals decided that they also wanted to watch the football on the big screen in the Bar Billiard room as well....... so we had the local lager louts milling around and moaning that we were in their way. >:( >:(
Half-way through the last game (a very tense & close decider) the bar staff decided that it would be fun to let one of the local P***heads loose on a microphone at full volume...... so loud that it even overcame the Juke Box and Television. >:( >:(
When they were persuaded to stop that, the people then decided it would be fun to bang on the window next to the Table and pull faces at us...... sadly, I was scoring at the time so was unable to do more than apologise to the players. ::)
The darts team were also having a practice night..... although most of their practice appeared to be for how many pints they could consume and how much they could get in our way while they were watching the football. ::)
The service of the bar staff was almost non-existent (unless you were a lager-lout local dart player of course)...... and yet again I was overcharged - twice!! >:( >:(
Fortunately, our opponents were very sporting and understanding about all of the above..... and the match went on.....
So, to the result & scores.....
Eight Bells 3 Brewers Droops 2 :o :o :o
Dave Ingram 2,760 - 3,930 Andy Farmer-Wright Andy made a solid 2k start with some nice 50/10 splits and looked comfortable until he cam off. Although I had the break back 3 times I was unable to settle (for various reasons, mostly stated above) and Andy ended up a deserved winner. 0-1 :-X
Pam Peacock 1,330 - 1,040 Colin Humphrey A very scrappy game with Noddy really struggling with the table, Pam did enough to keep the lead and take the win. 1-1 ;)
Rob Driver 3,160 - 2,850 Richard Jeffrey Jock off early and Rob rode his luck to take the lead, then knocked in a good break of just under 2k. Jock got the break back but just ran out of time finishing the game off with a good 1.6k. 2-1 ;)
Gary Foster 1,480 - 2,040 Lorraine Hall Gary had plenty of chances in this match and would have been very close to beating Lorraine if he had kept his scores.... but Lorraine played well when it mattered to level the match. 2-2 :(
Colleen Park 1,200 - 890 Fred Jones With everything going on around them (juke box, television, microphone & idiots) it was easy to understand why neither player really settled to playing a good game..... Colleen gained an early lead when Fred missed the break and, while Fred closed the gap towards the end, Colleen potted the red to make sure that she couldn't be caught. 3-2 ;D :-*
My thanks go to our opponents who were as gracious in defeat as they always are in victory...... they were wonderful company and very understanding. ;D ;D ;D
Sadly, all of my concerns about the suitability of The Eight Bells as a venue for Bar Billiards when we first moved here were proved to be 100% correct tonight. >:( >:(
I cannot speak for the future of the Wednesday night Mid-Sussex Team here, that decision is not mine to make, however I can only hope that our captain is able to find a replacement player for our home games to take my place.
I can confirm now that our Monday Lewes League team will be moving to a new venue next season...... only 2 more home games there in Lewes, hopefully my pounding headache will have gone by then. ::)
I offer my apologies again to our opponents tonight. :-[ :-[ :-[

Without wishing to stray off topic, it has to be said.............
No-one likes to hear of neanderthals ruining a bar billiards evening in this way.
Full credit to both teams for putting up with it - and seeing the match through.
Looks like temporary measures will have to be taken - before something nasty happens like Ros's table being damaged.
I hope that something can be sorted out soon in the way of a venue deserving of a loyal and valued team.

I hope that something can be sorted out soon in the way of a venue deserving of a loyal and valued team. We already have a new (bar billiard friendly) venue lined up for our Lewes team next year....... 8-) 8-) Monday nights tend to be quieter at the Eight Bells, so we will play our final 2 home matches there this year..... :-/ It is not my decision as to where the Mid-Sussex team will play in the future..... :'(

Well a better night at the Fish than at the Eight Bells it seems - even with the table playing appauling badly!
Laughing Fish 3 - 2 CKRBL
H 4460 vs 3450 Derek Taylor
Derek should have had this. I played the worst game of the season at home. Derek opened with a solid 2.2k. I played like a prat for about 15 minutes failing to get the break back at all, until I got it back in the last 3 or so minutes and knocked in a quick 3k break to somehow win, although I really didn't deserve it!
Ray Carpenter 2120 vs 410 Dilly
Far more points were lost here than kept. Ray opened with 1.8k and then pegged it. He was soon back on for breaks of 800 and 740. Dilly got a good 860 back, followed by 1.5k but sadly another peg was felled. Dilly then managed to black peg it before a few point were added at the end.
Andy Brooks 2160 vs 5930 Ted Stringer
I for one have never seen Ted play this well. He opened with a solid 3k. Andy replied with 1.3k, then Ted added a 1.2k + a few medium sized breaks for the win.
Chris Ashford 2250 vs 2430 Peter Edwards
Chris threw this game away! He opened with 650, Peter didn't do much in reply, and then Chris added 1.1k. After some time Peter gradually caught up. Chris had it won on a medium break after the bar but took out the peg, and all Peter needed to do was pot the final ball, which he did.
Les Whiteman 3130 vs 1880 Jenny Edwards
Close early on. Jenny started with 300, and Les replied with 600. Jenny then took the lead with a 700 break, but Les managed to work his way to 1k ahead and stayed there for the match win.
Apologies for the state of the table tonight. It was not on par. Since I have started working, I have not had time to give it the usual TLC, and this was very evident tonight. I will put aside the time before the next home game!

Zeds 5, Plough 0
Super G 6020, Martin Hannigan BP Mr Mike007 3010, Des Gasson 2130 tommo 3780, Geoff Parsons 2320 Johnny Haigh 2660, Mark Webber 1300 Barry Timson 1850, Mark Potter 1830
What can I say - apart from any luck going tonight went to the home team. Even luck that was bad: Johnny Haigh spilled two separate breaks early on which would have taken his score to 5k. And in the last frame, notoriously difficult on our top as the table by then has 'over-warmed', Mark Potter played really patiently and correctly only to be denied on the last ball, which a grateful Barry potted.
Plough gracious in defeat, and the food courtesy of Super G was excellent.

Mind you, we didn't get the result of the Bravos/Royals match either.

Watermill B 4 1/2 Whitehorse 1/2
All the games with the exception of the last one could have gone either way as you will see
Paul Blackburn 2000 Colin Marshall 1950 Colin did not get much from his opening break but did not leave me much which was the story of the game.I was 550 behind with about 5 mins left and scored about 500.I needed the 100 to win which I was lucky enough to get. Tony Williams 4270 Colin Mansfield 3110 Tony broke off with just over 1000 then after some small scores Colin got the break back and knocked up 2500+.Tony then got the break back and knocked up another 2000+ and held on for the win. Sabina Williams 1210 Ian Powel 1000 Sabina started with only a couple of hundred from her break and Ian was struggling all through the game. There were no big scores just a few hundred here and there and Sabina held on to win. Gavin Boyd 1160 Brian Coleman 1160 This was one of those rare tied games Gavin stuggled on the break which was unusual for him. This was a game of very low scores throughout.Gavin needed the 100 to win but missed and Brian needed the 200 to tie and put it down. Martin Range 3300 Trevor Howes 280 Martin was alway in control of this game Trevor missed the break and when he got it back he left both balls up on the one up shot.
Always enjoy playing the white horse who are a great bunch very friendly and a great laugh.
Very close which

Looks like temporary measures will have to be taken - before something nasty happens like Ros's table being damaged. too late. the table has already been damaged a few weeks ago, hence the cue ball no longer sits where you want it to on the 'D'. tho it was slightly better tonight after i'd left the (cold but heavy) iron sitting on it for a little while as soon as we arrived. the saddest/worst/infuriating part is that the landlord & landlady were there and seemed oblivious to the whole thing - the landlady was the one who turned the music up, and the landlord put the football on. funny how the music was turned down when everyone was watching the penalties on telly.........but the football sound was off ?? ::) ::)

BREWERS BRAVOS 4 BREWERS ROYALS 1 Could the Warrior been any more correct with his prediction?
Lynne:2270 Dan Jennings:2850 A nice opening frame with Lynne continually cutting out Dans lead only for him to strike back immediatly. In the end he did enough for a good win. What i haven't mentioned that Dan is just 12 years old :o. Hopefully he will continue to play this game that he shows a lot of promise at. Good to see he had a big grin on his face for the rest of the night ;D 8-).
Spud:2880 Lynn Storr:1480 Once again myself and Lynn were drawn to do the Billiards waltz and i managed to come away with an unconvincing victory. I was lucky Lynn couldnt get the balls back to have a crack at the break as i reckon i would have been in big trouble.
Nikki:1570 Russel Jennings:1110 Bring out the bunting, crack open the champagne and put your best frocks on! After 22 weeks without reward Nikki finally got the win that we all felt was coming. Funnily enough, it perhaps wasnt her best game but she edged ahead mid-game and clung on with some solid play. Russ was unlucky as he couldnt quite avoid the pegs and was left with too much to do when the bar dropped. ;D ;D ;D
Bravo:8640 Jan Hinkins:860 With the party poppers packed away it was time instead to release the attack dog. Bravo played very well to secure the win for us, compiling three 2k breaks on the way to victory. Jan found the break mid-game and was unlucky not to score more.
Paul:2500 Anne Stockinger:1440 With Anne struggling to find the break, Paul inched further ahead with some solid play. Eventually, Anne found the break near the end to mount a last charge 1k break before Paul cleared the balls up after the bar dropped to get us an extra point.
Comiserastions to the Royals who were,as ever, superb company. My team scarpered home and i was left to play an entertaing friendly of doubles with the opposition. All the best for the rest of the season.
