Both semi finals of the Mixed Pairs were played this week at the Elms. The table was playable but tricky.
Lady H and myself played Nick Brown & Jackie and beat them 2-1. Doug & Denise beat Gary & Anna Iles 2-0.
In the Ladies singles last night, there was a great match between Lady H and Jean. Jean won the toss and put Hayley into bat where she opened with a nice 3k break. A couple more turns later and Hayley made a brilliant 5,400 bk to make the first leg safe, just falling short of her first competitive 10k score with 9,800.
The second leg saw the fortunes change with Jean opening with about 4k. She added another 1900 and although Hayley got the balls back, couldn`t take advantage and Jean added another 4k.
The decider looked like they had changed tables. Hayley kicked off with 1700 and Jean only replied with 950. The balls stayed up the table for a while and then Jean black pegged trying to hit one behind the 10 hole. Nothing seemed to be going for both players until Jean retrieved the break. She made about 2400 and managed to hold on for the win.
Well played my hunny :-*, another new high score ;D

I refer to the women of the species being demanding and not us understanding beings called males.
As is known we always bend over backwards to please, and are never tempramental.

An eventful evening at the Dolphin yesterday for the men’s semi final – Kevin Tunstall vs Mark James.
Mark won the toss putting Kevin in to bat first. Kevin made about 2500 before coming off but Mark could only make about 1500 in reply. Kevin then played the rest of the time out for a comfortable 9660.
In the second leg Mark looked confident and set about winning the game on his opening visit. He had one difficult moment when a kick on the break put the red behind the left hand 50 but he recovered and eventually touched up on around 9k.
For the deciding 3rd leg Kevin got his head down and was looking good to run out the table for around 18 or 19k but it was not to be and neither ball went down when he hit a split too thick while on 9800.
Even breaks of course so Mark then steadily set about chasing Kevin’s target, there was no rush and when the bar dropped he calmly popped another coin in and continued. Neither player had missed a shot and before too long the supporters observed that Mark only needed to play the break three more times, leave the one-up (putting him level) then simply pot one more ball to win.
Mark executed the break and one-up successfully but had not left the red in the ideal position for another split. The white would not sit where he wanted it on the D so Mark chose to play a straight shot to the 50 hole at close on dead weight. To Mark’s horror and everyone else’s surprise the red ball hit the edge of the 50 hole and whipped out; game and match over, a draw!
The boys agreed to replay the whole match on another night rather than play to a finish there and then as the pub was starting to fill up with regulars. Watch this space for details of the next exciting episode.

Sounds like an incredible match Martin, I haven't heard of a match taking 2 nights to play before! Good luck to both in the replay.

Just like at the Crucible, with matches played over two sessions....
Or, as I felt like saying at the time, "ARSE!"

What an excellent report by the new(ish) member.
It sounded like a great game. What an unbelievable finish.
If the repeat is going to be as exciting, you may as well start selling tickets !

Excellent game by the sounds of things, and please postthe return date as if poss sure some of us would like to pop along. Replay scheduled for Tuesday, 29th, this time at the Swan, early kick off at 6:15pm (enabling KT to watch his beloved Man Utd. afterwards). If we draw again it's outside to the car park to take penalties against each other!

Caught onto this thread a little late, but 'grats to Lady H on what seems to have been a great game and hard luck on missing 10k. And good luck to you boys on your second night.
Feel the pressure, feel the nerves, it will make for a more interesting penalty shoot out. Remeber to bring jumpers

It all depends on whether the Handcross club have it on or not :P Lady H & BB Reaper are playing their semi final after mine.

Saga over, Mark won 2-0. He won the toss and put me in. A good move it seemed as i hit my first split too thick and watched as Mark then built a winning break of 9k. Second game, he continued in the same vain, opening with another 9k before touching on. Well done Mark, probably the right result as you should have won last week :-/

nige & Chris 2 -1 Roger & Brian
Played at the Schooner - a game me and chris should have lost. Both me and Chris had goes at the break in gamne 1 but neither made more than 500 with our efforts. Roger made a 5k break for 1-0. Roger's break in leg 2 - he made 2k, I came back with 5k, Brian got the balls back to get up to 3,500 with the bar dropped, but without realising his lead, took a peg out handing the leg to us 1-1.
My break in leg 3, going off with 5k, Brian came back with 1,300. Chris pegs his break nearing the winning line, but Roger fails on his visit leaving me to wrap up the match.
Schooner is a nice new venue with cracking view of the harbour. Table is very, very tough though with a big roll to the right. Splitting was very difficult and to give an example of one split Brian took on for the 50-100, ended up very thin with the white nearly missing the red and then he missed the left hand side of the 10 hole.
I hope that the home players can give the table a bit of an adjustment especially as we are playing the cup final there in 3 weeks v Dyke B which should be a cracking game. I know they are only just starting playing in there so it will take time to get the table right. I am absolutley certain it would be a very good top with a bit of adjusting.

Agree Nigel will be a very good top, but is at the moment very variable and certainly tricky.
The floor being highly polished is causing problems and know it is in hand to make sure the feet are chocked, the floor is also out of level so any small adjustment to table position makes one hell off a difference. we at the moment are over the moon with the venue, landlady and catering, but many of us will only be happy when the table is consistent.
We have a situation with the right hand roll that needs resolving, know Tarretts were in yesterday to look at one or two problems witht he table itself. should all be right for the final and yes what acracking game it will be with both teams on even break.

We had the same problem on Monday night Nige, match could have gone either way.
The Chairmans cup final took place last night at the Swan. Talk about topsy turvy ::), a great match for the neutrals but maybe not for the captains.
Three Horseshoes `A` Gardeners `B`
Game 1 - Neil Higgins broke off with a good 9k break giving Mal no chance. 0 - 1
Game 2 - What i assumed was one of our bankers, Rick with the break. Unfortunately, he never seemed to get the pace of the table and lost a couple of scores which would have been enough to level the match. Tony just plodded away and finished the balls off for a crucial point. 0 - 2
Game 3 - Things didn`t look good now for the Shoes with Nick Brown next, with the break on his Inter league home table. Surprisingly, he came off really early and BB Reaper set about establishing a lead, which he added to twice more until the point was safe. 1 - 2
Game 4 - Now Paul Reece has had 4 attempts on the Swan table this year, none of which have ended in a win. This one was nip and tuck with both he and Gary Ridley swapping the lead. Luckily for us, Paul was about 900 up when the bar dropped, so all square. ;D 2 - 2
Game 5 - Barney v myself in the decider. Paul chose to break but hit his first split far to thick and came off. Mark didn`t give me much of a look on Tuesday night and i needed to settle quickly. After a couple of splits up the top i managed to make an 8k break which just about settled it and added another couple for good measure. Barney came back at the end with 4k. 3 - 2
Great evening, good support from the locals and a team trophy to finish off a very competitive season. Well done guys ;) :) :)

Unfortunately my opening 500 wasn't quite enough to worry Kevin in the decider ;D.
Congrats to the 3 horseshoes.
