As there were only 5 entries for this area qualifying competition, it meant there had to be a prelim. first. The draw was done saturday at Bletchingdon
Prelim
Rose & Crown v Lamb & Flag @ Morris Motors SSC
Semi Finals
Morris Motors SSC v Winner of prelim @ Corner House Horse & Harrow v Corner House @ Lamb & Flag
All matches to be played by 20th August.

Rose & Crown won the first 3 games. Wins for KT, Mark & Joe sealing the win. Table played a bit trickier than i remember it but everyone had a chance.

Result Morris Motors 3 Rose & Crown 2 Ray Sturgess 1,550 Tony Martin 10,000 Keith Sheard 6,000 Mark Turner 2,400 Kevin Godfrey 7,220 Kevin Tunstall 5,550 Pauline Withey 1,440 Joe O'Farrell 6,510 Steven Sheard 8,360 Leon Beer 610
On a quirky table Ray only opened with 300 & Tony played very well with a break of 9,500 to take the first game. Mark came off with about 2,000 & I went in with 5,600, we then both lost small breaks because the red ball spot was coming loose, eventually coming off on the red ball as Mark played a break shot. I thought it was going to cost me the game because he then came back with a 3,000+ break with no spot on the table but lost them....Phew!! The two Kevins had a ding dong battle with Kevin G coming out on top, his first competitive win over the maestro. Pauline found the table not to her liking as Joe ran out a comfortable winner to make it 2-2. In the timed break decider young Steven played extremely well under pressure to open with 8,360 in 11 min's 30, which meant Leon had to not miss before reaching that score, unfortunately for him & his team he missed on just 610.
Now just one game away from going to Reading for the National finals, to try to retain the title we won last year. But I'm sure the Horse & Harrow will try to do something about that in the area final first. 8-)

Well done Keefy, quirky and damn slow is what i`d call it. Can`t believe it`s the same table that i knocked Steven out of the County singles last year. Oh well never mind, would like to have signed off winning this competition for the Rose & Crown. The 3 main teams i`ve captained (Tandem, Black Horse & Chequers) have all managed to win this title, so i was a bit disappointed to go out given so many chances. Looks like it`ll have to be with my new Sussex team next year then.......................

Final Morris Motors 2 Horse & Harrow 3 Played at the Red Lion (Cassington)
Ray Sturgess 8,280 *Paul Lawson 970 *Keith Sheard 12,040 Pete Welch 4,560 Kevin Godfrey 450 *Garry Johnson 17,160 *Steven Sheard 4,340 Pete Burton 7,870 Pauline Withey 7,050 Phil Collins 8,970
What a final !! Paul lost his opening break of 4,000, Ray got breaks of 2,000 & 5,000+ to take the first game against the break. I opened up with a break of 10,380 to make it 2-0. Garry pulled a game back with an opening break of 10,370. Steven came off early on his break & Pete went in with 7,000+ to make it 2-2. In the deciding timed game, Pauline opened up with a fine break of 6,870 in 7 min's 30 sec's to put the pressure on the young shoulders of Phil. He responded magnificently with a break of 8,600 in 9 min's & played safe with very little time left to win the match for his overjoyed team mates.
Well done to the Horse & Harrow on a great comeback & good luck in the All England Finals.
Not a bad team considering Dennis Atkins was missing from the line up.
We would have liked to try to retain our All England win from last year, but not to be. :(
Keith

Comments from an outside observer :
What a turn up for the books ! Some well-known Oxonian faces will be missing in the All-England Team championships next Sunday........... But don't discount their 'replacements' from carrying off the title.

I did once overhear someone remark that I talk "a load of warlocks" - or at least that's what it sounded like they said. ;D
