I have received the following enquiry from a local (Merstham) pub landlord:
We have a pub in Newport Pagnell that is interested in putting in a table and joining a league. Can you give me a contact that I can pass on to them please.
Please advise if you are able to help.

It's a long county with only one League - High Wycombe - right down in t'south. Nearer to Northampton, surely ?

You have definite boundaries then, set in your constitution ?
I didn't realise that, as we have no such thing in Sussex: Alfold (Surrey) teams, for instance, play in the Billingshurst (Sussex) league because it's nearer than Redhill which is at the eastern extremity of Surrey.
And HonVicePresident will confirm that teams in Emsworth (Hants) play in the West-Sussex league - because they're nearer to Chichester than Portsmouth.

Okay, we can't keep the poor guy waiting for ever, so I've replied thus:
Hi Jason,
There is unlikely to be much of a response forthcoming from the Forum. Bar billiards in Buckinghamshire only really exists around the High Wycombe area, in the extreme south of the county. Northants (which is nearer) are not interested in anything outside of their own county.
Best thing I can suggest is that the landlord buys a table at minimum outlay to himself, and tries to build up interest from there. There is a good one for sale here ....................
It's a long way away, but it's not on eBay, and bargains there tend to get snapped up straight away.
He will be the first in the area with a table, and could advertise in Milton Keynes for local interest. A new town might well take the game to heart, like they did with the football ! There is a tremendous catchment area, bar billiards is not played in Bedfordshire or Herts (though it used to be) but it is in the surrounded counties, this at present being a sort of 'black hole'.
I wish him well in his venture.
Best regards, Clive.
Ian,You might want to transfer this from Northants board to "Where Else in the UK" on the General Discussion board - tommo.

We should not discourage new teams. It would be great to get back to two separate divisions again one day.

When a pub has got a new table in the past a few of us have gone over to it and had a chat with locals, showed them how to play the game and showed them the basic shots. Does anybody fancy popping over some time with me as I am more than willing to pop over. :)

If people are really interested in having a new team in the league outside Northants then you need to bring your comments to the next committee meeting which is Tuesday 01/12/2009 ;D

The constitution needs to be checked, as it will take an EGM or the AGM to change it.

I don't think anyone wants to travel all that way and not sure if they would want to put a team in. Just nice to see another pub interested and this was my only reason in offering to pop over

Thanks, Jason, I welcome this development and will now send a follow-up reply with a more positive spin.
As I see it, where there is a possibility of the game taking off in hitherto uncharted territory, it is as well to obtain advice from an 'expert' as if the landlord leaves it all to the brewery you can finish up with a Supreme or a Narrow SAMS which are, to quote Sav, "no good to either man or beast".
For an adjacent county to show an interest and be offering of help can only be a good thing for the future of our sport. 8-)

:) Count me in as well Jase
Nobody likes to travel too far but do we really want to discourage a possible new venue?
I appreciate the biggest travelling would be done by Barton and Thrapston but like others have said - once a season!

I will be upset if we all don't fully support this possible new venue!
What an opportunity to expand our league and to have a new venue, I am hoping the league makes them feel welcome :) 8-)
