Watermill A 2.5 Mill House Z 3.5 at the St Francis SC.
Cracking match, was as exciting as it sounds. 8-)
Norman Cragg 3250, *Barry Timson 3250 0.5 - 0.5 *John Staplehurst 3760, Alan Downs 4560 0.5 - 1.5 Kim Stenning 3240, *Graham Daniels 40 1.5 - 1.5 *Geoff Rose 3600, tommo 5470 1.5 - 2.5 * Chris Nikolaj 2530, *Mick Holmwood 1330 2.5 - 2.5 a tie-breaker necessary! * Norman Cragg 1850, *Barry Timson 4060 2.5 - 3.5
But this does not explain the drama! Game 1, Norman was in command at the bar and potted all remaining whites to go 200 up but missed the 100 shot (twice) and Barry sunk the 200 at the second attempt to tie. Game 2 was cut and thrust, each player making a thousand per visit until poor John got a bad kick on the break shot which allowed Alan that one extra chance. Game 3 Graham found the table not to his liking and could not take command when Kim lost a useful break early on in the game. On the back foot throughout, he blackpegged towards the end when trying to force the pace. Game 4. Geoff made all the early running, but tommo burst into life half-way through with a 4k break.
In Game 5, Mill House were almost home and hosed, Mick having 4900 on the board and a 1700 break going when the unthinkable happened............the ball whipped off the right hand 50 and onto the black! Chris had played steady himself which meant that there was no time for a possible comeback. Barry Norman made his comeback instead! Barry won the toss and what a good toss it was to win, Barry banking 3k and Norman with even break not being able to match it.
So there we are, the St Francis table playing absolutely superbly, as Eight scores of over 3k will bear witness. Thanks indeed to Shaun for doing the preparation, it was a pleasure to play on.
And commiserations to teh Watermill A, who are worthy adversaries and really gave us a run for our money tonight!

did barry and norman both manage to draw themselves or do you get to nominate? Well we had a set of rules handy and the contingency isn't covered 100%. But Competition Rule 9 covering Individual competitions sets out what to do in the event of a tied match (an extra game to be played on the night, even break, toss of a coin for choice) so we applied that to Team Cup. Sussex Rules say similar. Kim and I agreed beforehand that should it get to 2.5-all, the two players involved would be the two who had tied, and sealed it with a handshake.

Looks from the scores as if the Mill House was difficult last night - disappointing for me, and I can only apologise. This is the problem which faced me on Tuesday: Levelling our table again after yesterday being in a bar with floor sloping the opposite way proved a challenge.... (yesterday it needed 11 half turns on the left legs plus four beer mats under each to get it acceptable !) It seemed all right as I left it, but obviously, like Sparky's table at the USC, and the Hurst a while back, it will need time to settle and a few further adjustments while it 'beds down' again.

no complaints from me. Did not see any beer mats under legs so assummed you popped in on Wed to check & why I thanked you for prepping the table.
Seems uphill 2 shots into the 200 from the back cushion & the break wasn't easy most players found the white coming in front of the 50 hole.
Ian.

That sounds just about right, and what we went through at the start of the season before it settled. Being on a carpet, the heavier front (as it has the rack) sinks lower, causing it to play uphill which in turn makes the break difficult. There's no games on it next week (we have a date with some egg sandwiches next Tuesday!) but I'll have to remember to raise the front legs the following week.
