A case of The Magnificent Eight. :) So are we to take it that Middlesex and South West London are now completely devoid of tables ? (The link Mark Senior provided threw up ones in Brentford, Twickenham, Teddington, Walton-on-Thames, Thames Ditton and Richmond - sadly all now gone, presumably, along with another one that used to be in our league: the Midday Sun at Chipstead/Coulsdon, now a Hungry Horse Restaurant !) I'll certainly look in on the Bedford Tavern at Croydon, though, next time I'm passing that way.

Josie - How about the Bedford Tavern at Croydon, then ? It is quite close to Selhurst Park, so should offer an element of nostalgia both to you as a West Ham fan and to me as a Wimbledon supporter. D.C. might be up for it too, I once saw him in the vicinity.

If this chap wants any publicity in the BBQ, he can get in touch with me. Unfortunately, I do not know anything about London to warrant me helping out in any other way, otherwise I would try.

That's wonderful. Thanks so much for the offer. I'll give him your details when I meet with him and if he needs to get in touch he will.
Thanks again.

Hey there,
It's me again. I've just had word from my features editor that it look like there won't be enough space in the magazine to warrant a big meet up in London. I was wondering if anyone would be availiable for a chat (next Monday maybe?) to discuss the decline of Bar Billiards in London? Any reccomendations on good people to talk to about this?
Apologies again for anyone who's been put out.

From doing a bit of research, here is a list of London pubs that still have a bar billiards table: -The Pembury, 90 Amhurst Road, London, E8 1JH, 020 8986 8597 Glad you've heard about it! It took me two months to get my table, and I'm told it came out of a pub near Oxford. (It's hired from Bar Billiards Ltd.) The table is very popular in the pub, and I think the locals would be interested in participating in a league or in inter-area tournaments.

Hi and glad to hear of another venue.
You do not have a league in your area, so I don't see any possibilities there unless you can find other venues and start one.
You are North of the river, so presumably would be eligible for the poorly named annual 'Inter Area' tournament. That has divisions, so you could start fairly gently.
You could register whatever County you are in with the AEBBA (All England). That would entitle you to entry into the County championships at Reading, but I fear you would be cannon fodder.
Whatever, let us know and we can provide contact details.

Go on Chris - give him some encouragement roflmao
He might be able to set up a couple teams in his pub and call that a league ;)
They could be hidden talent that'll create havoc in some of the County champs.

Everyone starts somewhere, but "Inter-Area" has been going a long time under this name, basically because that is what it is. I hope he comes back for more information.

Here's a pub in London where there used to be bar billiards: www.professorharbottle.co.uk/pub/londonnorth/clissold.htmlExtract from an article in July's edition of Uncut (rock magazine): It's the winter of 1961, in the obscure north London neighbourhood of Fortis Green. The tempestuous stage career of Ray and dave Davies, the Kinks' creative core, has just begun in the Clissfold Arms pub. Directly opposite stands the family home, where they will write their greatest songs. "My dad knew the guv'nor, and he got us regular gigs," Dave remembers, "They've still got the little flat stage at the back. I was 14, Ray 17. We would play duo instrumentals by Chet Atkins or the Ventures. Ray played "South" there - his first real tune, which became "Tired Of Waiting". The crowd was family and friends, and locals milling about. It was our test run." The Kinks' association with the Clissfold continued well into their heyday. "Even when we had Number One records" says Dave, "We'd go in there and play bar billiards and shove ha'penny with dad's mates. A lot of our history's there. It became a venue for fans coming to London, taking pictures, like they would of Carnaby Street. They put up the Kinks Korner with memorabilia, and a little plaque."So now you know. The Kinks played bar billiards in their formative years.

I was watching an episode of the Hustle, a few weeks back and the crew were having a bit of a discussion over a Bar Billiards table. This must have been in the London area, but it was a shame to see they had placed a White pin in front of the 30 hole!

This was actually posted up by someone last month on FlickR: www.flickr.com/photos/aquarion/5093937429/Looks like a typical London pub table, check out the beer stains to the left and the nasty right-hand roll catching out the player on his/her second shot!

The Bedford Tavern, Croydon, has replaced the bar billiards with darts, but have found evidence of two more in or around London: The Clarence, 53 Whitehall, Westminster, SW1A 2HP Golden Lion, Town End, Caterham-on-the-hill, Surrey CR3 5UG Amendments made. tommo

Squeeze also, apparently: In Jools Holland's autobiography Barefaced Lies and Boogie Woogie Boasts he draws reference to the Brunswick Arms in Poplar where he and Glenn Tilbrook "used to regularly take part in bar billiards tournaments."

London rather strangely appears to be a no-go area as regards bar billiards ! This is all the more strange when you consider that the original table manufacturer - William Jelkes & Sons of Holloway Road - were based in London. Though no longer trading, tables made by Jelkes in the 1930s continue to be popular and many have been fully restored to their original condition after a colourful history over the last 70 years in the pubs, inns and taverns across the British Isles. Maybe it's because people have to be able to get around really quickly to meet up to play matches and the M25 is seen as the border for which this is possible. Tables do however exist within the circle of the M25 - I have played on tables in Raynes Park and Tooting, and also a (Redhill) League match at the Emma Hamilton (Wimbledon) - though I doubt if those particular tables are still there now ! Further evidence of difficulties in organising competitive play in London is provided in these early AEBBA minutes:

I have used the BB table in the Glasshouse Stores, the pub is owned by Samuel Smiths so very reasonable beer prices for central London

Will be visiting some bar billiards playing friends in London next weekend. Anybody got any up-to-date tips on tables? The Pembury Tavern (Hackney) and the Glasshouse Stores (Soho) seem to be where it's at in London. For a more discreet visit, I found the Dog & Bell (Deptford) and the Ship (Kennington) a pleasurable experience. Details provided on the List of London Venues thread. Don't forget to record your visit under Table Investigations in London.

Bar billiards in Harrow, early 1970s : In the course of my investigations, I stumbled across this one.......... Not sure if the version would have been 3-Pin or 4-Pin: I suspect the latter, with the emphasis being on endurance rather than on aggregate scores. Probably made a brief appearance in the Guinness Book of Records before being eclipsed by more impressive claims from Oxon, Berks and Kent.
