Margo and I have just got back from seeing Angels And Demons at Horsham. Takes you to Rome as if you are there. Brilliant effects. Starring Tom Hanks. What more could you want ? Relatively faithful to the book, which predates the Da Vinci Code and is a better story. Recommended. 8-)

I've heard A&D was rubbish.
Star Trek was good, even if you're not familiar with the series.

Angels & Demons, We went to see it last week. I liked it, Lady H said it was ok but she wouldn`t watch it again.
We`re going to see Night at the Museum II this weekend sometime, watched the first one again last night. Brilliant ;D

Night at the Museum 2 was okay, the boys enjoyed it although I preferred the first one myself...... :-/
Went to see Terminator Salvation last weekend, special effects not as extreme as Terminator 3 but plenty of action to watch and we all enjoyed it. 8-)
Haven't been to see Angels & Demons yet, hope to get there soon though..... Tom Hanks was excellent in the DaVinci Code and I enjoyed reading the book. ;D

A bit of an oldie - 2002 I think, but was on again last night and I never tire of watching it as it's about the occult............The Ninth Gate, starring Johnny Depp.
Beautifully filmed in Portugal, Spain and France. The young girl who it's in doubt whether she's an angel or a demon, and who seduces Depp towards the end is Emmanuelle Seigner, who is apparently Roman Polanski's wife.

Been a while since we had one of these..... ::)
Went to see "The Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey" last night at the cinema, as a big fan of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy I expected it to be very good and was certainly not disappointed. 8-)
Acting was brilliant, scenery was breathtaking, special effects superb.... the nearly 3 hours of the film flew past far too quickly and I am now really looking forward to the next section of this to be released. ;D

Yup, big Tolkien fan here too, still think it's ashame they missed Tom Bombadil from the LOTR films though. I was only thinking last night it's time I read the lot again.
Did you view the Hobbit in ordinary 2D??

As a child I read The Hobbit and loved it, but then found Lord of the Rings heavy going (although my brother was very enthusiastic about it).
In adulthood I have been more drawn to LOTR and apparently the Two Towers were inspired by real ones in Edgbaston, where Tolkein lived - and where I was taken to live as a small baby.
I will definitely try to view The Hobbit some time.
Margo went to see the new James Bond film, Skyfall, with our granddaughter, both said it was very good.

Margo went to see the new James Bond film, Skyfall, with our granddaughter, both said it was very good. Agree that Skyfall was also excellent.... the opening sequence was probably the best I have seen in a Bond film and the rest of the story line followed on well. 8-)

I enjoyed Skyfall and saw it on my Bournemouth visit.
It was a good film but twenty minutes too long and the storyline was muddled at the start in my view, still well worth watching though.

It has been may years since I read the Hobbit and was disappointed that parts of the story I remembered seemed different, notably regarding how the Trolls were turned to stone, but overall the film was very good for all the reasons quoted already and that the near 3 hours passed so quickly too (saw in 3D).
LOTR has always been my favourite book and have re-read it many times, and am overdue to get my 3 volume hardback 1961 set (63 shillings ;D) out for another mammoth session.....as I can't put it down once started. Yes some of the missing bits were noticeable (Tom Bom) and even the different view of the characters took me a while to accept, as we all have mental pictures from the book that are destroyed by a film.
'Dune' was a film I didn't like very much because of the destruction of my mental pictures....oh well can't win them all 8-)

Recent DVD releases that I have watched....
Ice Age 4.... enjoyable enough nonsense for the kids, but not as good as the first 3 in the series. :-/
Expendables 2.... great fun with nearly all of my favorite "action heroes" from the last 20 years basically taking the mickey out of some of their previous roles, but plenty of action and a good enough story line to pull it off IMHO. ;D
Batman - The Dark Knight Rises.... Excellent, plenty of good special effects and lots of action. 8-)
Ted.... hmmm, hard to know what to make of this one. :-/ Certainly very politically incorrect, crude, rude and in bad taste for most of the film.... :o ....my 19 year old son bought it down with him to watch over Xmas and he loved it.... 8-) ....I can't say that I really "enjoyed" it and I'm glad that I didn't buy it, but I have to admit that I did laugh most of the time. ::) ;D

Ted.... hmmm, hard to know what to make of this one. :-/ Certainly very politically incorrect, crude, rude and in bad taste for most of the film.... Will keep a look out for that one...if you want a film with lots of swearing but with a good storyline, try Glengarry Glen Ross (stars Alec Baldwin, Jack Lemmon, Al Pacino and Kevin Spacey).

A film I will definitely be avoiding is the 2004 film "King Arthur" which attempts to demystify Arthurian Legend, and represents Arthur as a Roman officer based at Hadrian's Wall rather than a medieval knight who becomes king of Camelot. ::) By contrast I enjoyed every second of the TV serial "Merlin" which was true to the legend, and I was rather sad when it ended, on Christmas Eve. :'(

Just watched the 2011 version of the thing, if you enjoy gruesome and rather imcomprehemsibly horrible deaths with excess paranoia then give it a go, although not as good as the '82 version, still very watchable and pretty mental!

Having had a couple of quiet weeks on the Bar Billiard front, I thought I would catch up with a few of the recent DVD releases.... Parker.... this film reminded me a bit of the George Clooney "Oceans" trilogy (11,12 & 13).... ....but with Jason Statham giving it a bit more "ooomph" than Clooney in the action stakes. I certainly enjoyed watching it. Jack Reacher.... Tom Cruise in the title role, a fair bit of action but not his best film IMHO. Olympus has Fallen.... I am often hesitant to buy a film that is billed as something like "Die Hard at the White House" as they very rarely match up to the original that they refer to.... but, in this case, I am really glad that I did. This is probably the best film that I have watched for a long time, lots of action, strong story line and Gerard Butler and Aaron Eckhart play the lead roles superbly. If you like the "Die Hard" series (as much as I do) then you will really enjoy this as the 2 hours seemed to fly past. A Good Day to Die Hard.... the most recent of the series with Bruce Willis this time helping to save his son from the bad guys, although his son seemed to save him more often as Bruce is perhaps getting a bit too old for this type of film now! Enough action to keep me happy and I loved the car chase, just wish that I could have the bad guys armoured truck for rush hour on the M25...!!
