After seeing this in Nigel's excellent Newsletter, I thought it would be a good idea as a new topic. I'm sure there are more "Classics" that others can remember.
(Copied from Nigel's Newsletter) "Greatest matches in National Tournaments" "The 3rd Round of this years Kent Classic saw an incredible match between Kevin Tunstall and Steven Sheard. Kevin was attempting to win a 22nd consecutive match in national tournaments and opened with 22,350. Steven came back with a magnificent 23,240. I have had a look back at matches where both players contributed a 21k score.
1) Paul Sainsbury v John Burrows 22,950 - 22,890 (AE Ind'95) - Burrows went on to win title 2) Steven Sheard v Kevin Tunstall 23,240 - 22,350 (Kent Classic'11) 3) Mark Sawyer v Kevin Tunstall 23,700 - 22,070 (Oxford Open'99) - FINAL 4) Keith Sheard v Paul Sainsbury 23,700 - 21,860 (Grand Prix'10) 5) Kevin Tunstall v Simon Tinto 22,530 - 21,410 (AE Ind'95) 6) Keith Sheard v Tony Walsh 22,450 - 21,250 (Oxford Open'02) 7) Kevin Tunstall v Keith Sheard 21,410 - 21,190 (Wessex Open'92) 8) Bernie McCluskey v Peter Farrelly 22,350 - 21,140 (Charity Singles'92) 9) Kevin Tunstall v Mark Sawyer 28,440 - 21,000 (Kent Classic'99) (Sawyer missed chasing 25,060 with 4 min's left!)"
These are a few more that I have checked back on....
The Northants Open in 1996...... Q/F Keith Sheard 22,760 – 21,570 Kevin Clark S/F Keith Sheard 24,490 – 22,600 Kevin Tunstall Final John Burrows 24,160 – 23,620 Keith Sheard Story of the final.... John played the table out with 23,630, I missed on 23,620 with a minute left and John cleared up with 530.

Thanks Keith, the 1996 Northants Open, is the one BBQ I am missing (issue 22 i think) so don't have records of that particular tournament - it definitely produced three great matches which you were involved in all 3. I found another one I missed where you lost to KT 22,650 - 21,660 in round 2 of the '97 Charity Singles.
I did originally do the list for matches involving two 20k scores, but didn't have room for them all on the newsletter - but may as well put them on here - there are 25 I make it, these do not included matches pre BBQ (1991), or pairs matches.
1) J.Burrows v K.Sheard 24160 - 23620 (Northants Open'96) FINAL (Sheard missed 10 behind) 2) Paul Sainsbury v J.Burrows 22950 - 22890 (AE Ind'95) 3) K.Sheard v K.Tunstall 24490 - 22600 (Northants Open'96) 4) S.Sheard v K.Tunstall 23240 - 22350 (Kent Classic'11) 5) M.Sawyer v K.Tunstall 23700 - 22070 (Oxford Open'99) FINAL 6) K.Sheard v Paul Sainsbury 23700 - 21860 (Grand Prix'10) 7) K.Tunstall v K.Sheard 22650 - 21660 (Charity Singles'97) Sheard missed on target with 1 min left 8) K.Sheard v K.Clark 22760 - 21570 (Northants Open'96) 9) K.Tunstall v S.Tinto 22530 - 21410 (AE Ind'95) 10) K.Sheard v T.Walsh 22450 - 21250 (Oxford Open'02) 11) K.Tunstall v K.Sheard 21410 - 21190 (Wessex Open'92) 12) B.McCluskey v P.Farrelly 22350 - 21140 (Charity Singles'92) 13) K.Tunstall v M.Sawyer 28440 - 21000 (Kent Classic'99) MS missed chasing 25,060 with 4 min left 14) K.Tunstall v C.Reeves 21750 - 20990 (Grand Prix'07) 15) P.Collins v K.Tunstall 21460 - 20800 (Oxford Open'11) 16) K.Tunstall v K.Sheard 21610 - 20720 (Kent Classic'06) 17) G.Lloyd v R.Wooton 21750 - 20680 (Grand Prix'10) 18) S.Searle v E.Jordan 22130 - 20650 (Charity Singles'92) 19) S.Tinto v M.Sawyer 23460 - 20650 (Berks Open'96) 20) Steve Mariner v T.Walsh 21640 - 20570 (Grand Prix'96) 21) K.Sheard v Paul Sainsbury 22780 - 20450 (AE Ind'95) 22) K.Tunstall v T.Walsh 21450 - 20260 (Grand Prix'94) FINAL 23) S.Sheard v R.Wooton 21130 - 20210 (Grand Prix'07) 24) T.Walsh v Paul Sainsbury 20450 - 20130 (Grand Prix'94) 25) M.Turner v K.Tunstall 20500 - 20110 (Oxford Open'04) FINAL
Out of these matches KT has appeared in 12 (winning 7) and Keith has appeared in 9 (winning 5). They also played each other in 4 of these matches KT winning 3, Keith 1.

Also if anyone has any matches to add that they remember (perhaps pre 91) or any memories of these matches it would be nice to hear about them on here......

Great list this. Would be interesting to know if most of these were won by the person setting or chasing? Any chance of people knowing this? I am sure Kevin and Keith will remember theirs!

Highlighted in yellow are the players who went first - Keith will have to confirm on the 2 Northants '96 games but out of 23 matches there are only 5 occasions when they chasing player has made over 20k but come up short.....

I found the information in the "Pot Black" magazine and also Pauline has the BBQ No22 issue, so I got some scores from her. Pauline is bringing it round today, so I will copy and Email it to you.....hopefully!!

Nige, If my memory serves me right (which isn't good) I set in both matches against KT & KC.

Hello all, I have read the list of matches with great interest.
However there is a match that sticks in my mind between Terry Race and Trevor Galliene during the World Champs a few years back.
Watching Terry chase down over 15k in the second had the crowd completely enthralled and the atmosphere was terrific.

Another Jersey game that sticks in my mind...... partly because I had the pleasure of scoring it 8-) .....was the 2009 World Pairs final between Keith & Steven Sheard and Phil Collins & Leon Beer.
Phil & Leon won the toss and watched Steven pretty much play the table out for 16k+..... Phil then replied with just over 19k if I remember correctly to win the match. ;D
I don't know if there are any records for the highest "off-the-spot" aggregates, but would imagine that this would be among them and made for a brilliant final to the competition. ;D
However, I did feel a bit sorry for Keith and Leon who had to stand and watch and have always wondered why the latter stages (quarter-finals onwards) of the "World Pairs" are not played to the same format as the AEBBA British Pairs where all 4 players have a break game...... surely that would be the fairest way to decide who is the best pair. ??? ;)

Doug I agree Doug that was a great match, personally I think the best I have seen - I have never seen a whole room stand up and applaud like that for any game. That 96 Northants Final looks like it was a cracker, especially with Keith missing at the death

I had a very close view of that '96 Northants final, as I was one of the scorers, and I can confirm that it is one of the most exciting matches I have ever witnessed.
One feature of it that struck me at the time, however, is that the table did not seem as easy as one might imagine, given the scores.
In fact, I'm pretty sure that it was used for one of the quarter-finals on that day, a match in which both Les Green and Harry Leeson struggled to get the break shot consistently, the white ball whipping out quite often.
Watching John, in particular, in that final, I was amazed, indeed terrified, to see with how much left-hand side, and how forcefully, he struck the break shot every single time, in order to get the white to drop cleanly. It was truly a sight to behold.

Just misses out on inclusion, but worth mentioning methinks is the match between the two Kevins in the 2009 Sussex Open, when K.T. set a first-leg target of 19k and Kevin Hall replied with his 'maiden' 20k. 8-)

Another good comeback was in the 1984 Pairs Final in Eastbourne between Pete Farrelly/Steve Biggs & Dave Plumstead/Myself. I played the table out with 20,870 and Pete played it out with 21,100. (After he had played the same table earlier in the day!!)
Another situation where 2 players stood and watched without getting a shot!
