Just wondering if anyone has a tried and tested way of setting up your singles tournaments?
We at the Norwich BB League (4-Pin) are going to be starting a singles tournament next month, and wondered if anyone has a good way of drawing the games, as last season seemed to be a bit of a farce.
We were thinking of on of the following....
FA Cup style format. So all names in a hat a randomly drawn for Player A vs Player B (no more trying to get four people together at the same time!). Then all winners back in the hat and randomly drawn for next round.
Venues drawn randomly as well. Any advantage or preferred table will be luck of the draw so just play the cards you're dealt!
No more limiting it to 32 entries. Make open to all incl. regular punters down the pub. Even invite the guys from Wellingborough if we like!
Perhaps an entry fee to be collected by the pub when registration is made?
Any automatic qualification based on prior year placing?
Posters in each pub to advertise like we do with bands to encourage people to sign up.
Any one have any different ways they have done it??? Any feedback would be greatly recieved

Hi Carl,
Great to see so much enthusiasm for the game up in Norwich...... 8-)
Most League run their Singles Competition along the lines that you have put down, ie Random Draw with winners names back into the hat after each round is completed. You may also wish to run a "Plate Competition" for the first round losers to keep them interested, at least that way everybody is guaranteed at least 2 matches in the competition. ;)
Nearly all competitions in the Leagues that I have played in are arranged to be played on Neutral Tables (so no player gets an advantage of being drawn on their home table) and, where possible, the organisers also try to avoid putting players on a table that they have previously played on in the same competition to ensure that neither player has an unfair advantage..... obviously that is only possible where there are sufficient tables available to allow that to happen.
If you think that a shortage of "neutral" tables could make it awkward to arrange the matches, you may wish to consider playing the competition on a "Home & Away" basis with 2 games played at each players home venue, each player getting one break each. If the match is drawn after the 4 games, you could either have a one game "play-off" or use total aggregate scores to decide the winner. That format works well in one of the Leagues in Sussex.
You can either decide to play each round on a specified evening (which can cause problems if some people who may want to enter are unable to play that night and could reduce entries) or you can do the draw and give players a certain amount of time to arrange a play their matches.... with BOTH players being disqualified if they fail to play the game.
Most Leagues do charge a nominal entry fee (normally somewhere between £2.00 to £5.00) for their competitions which goes towards the cost of trophies etc, however I am not aware of anybody who gives automatic entry to competitions based on a players previous performance..... with the exception of "Masters Competitions" which are only open to the top players in the League based on their League performances throughout the season and those competitions are generally played all on one day.
I hope that the competition proves successful for you...... my eldest son is considering moving back to Norwich (he graduated from UEA last year and loves the area) so I may well pop up and try my hand at 4 Pin if he does decide to return to Norfolk. 8-)
Best of luck..... Dave

Fantastic, thats has answered all my questions, the list above were the suggestions that were battered about whilst in the pubs so thats why there are a few random things on there.
I shall put the ideas forward and see what we come up with, but the names in the hat looks the best option. Neutral tables? Would be great but our pubs are so close together, non of them are really neutral, but then, there are a couple that a few players dont like to play so luck of the draw is a great option ;)
Like I said on another post, if anyone wanted to come over to play, they would be very welcome, and if your son does decide to move back to Norwich, we will be needing some players soon! There are 3 pubs trying to get tables to join the league, so if its in his genes........ :)
Thanks again
Carl
