I have had a table for the past 25 years and am wondering if there is anyone who can throw some light as to manufacturer. Metal plate at front of table says Brevete s.g.d.c. France etranger licence A.Basilo. Under the table 1746 has been stamped in large letters. My assumption is that it is a French import but any ideas as to maker and date of manufacture would be much appreciated. Have photographs I could mail if it helps

Hi Jon and welcome to the Forum. I have moved your post into the area where you can see all sorts of information regarding the origins of tables and their history.
The diamond-shaped plate near the handle on your table, marked Brevete s.g.d.c. France only tells us that you have a standard timing mechanism, and does not in itself lend a clue to the type of table you have.
So if you can post a picture, that would definitely help.
If you want to have a go at identifying it for yourself, have a look at some of the links given under 'Some links distinguishing different table types'. The three most common are 1) SAMS, 2) Jelkes and 3) Riley/Burroughs and Watts.

My reply:
Hi Curt, The information is certainly worth sharing on the Forum. People I'm sure would be interested to see the photos, and we would also like to know the name and address of the venue for the AEBBA Map.
Unless Chris knows better (he normally does !) I would say that it is a very old Padmores table which has been sanded down so that the vendor could claim it as a "refurbishment". The cracks in the slate would need to be assessed by Sav - sometimes they can be overcome by the addition of a metal cross-brace, packed with some cardboard or beermats, and in bad cases the addition of a quarry slate for extra strength.
I've said Padmores as the four slots at the front of the table which hold the cues is a giveaway.
Regards,
Clive

The problem with these very old tables is that time has muddies the waters. Was the table made by a firm or did they just rent and maintain them like Bar Billiards Ltd who are often quoted as table makers as are Stelling Minnis (Bar Billiards Kent)
Is the makers name the maker of the table or the maker of the clock? we cannot be absolutely certain
Curt's table looks like this one
which has a Snookerette label on the timer.
but did they make the table?

Waters are definitely muddy ! Curt's table looks narrower than the one shown by Sav (50 pockets on Curt's look further down). It seems that the Padmores were made both "narrow" and ordinary.....
And I would enquire of Curt if there is a timer/bar mechanism ? I can't see a handle but possibly an electronic one may have been fitted ? tommo
