Hi Bob,
A good fun version to play is "31's". Any number of people can play, and you have a 'kitty' where each person puts 20p in at the start of a round. The target to reach is an exact score of 310, you can break down under this score but if you fail to score at least 100 you pay a fine of 10p. You also get fined if you go over 310. If you score exactly 310 you win the 'kitty'.
At the drop of the bar, or when a kitty is won, everyone pays 20p and you start again.
You would not believe how difficult it is to score the 310. You will find many come close but blow it with the final shot. All this helps to build up a decent-sized 'kitty'.
We play this at our pub every Xmas, with additional fines for failing to be ready on time for your go, or failing to score when it's your turn to do so. Great fun !

Played that lots of times, and as Tommo says, it's more difficult than you think to score exactly 310 and keep it.
Also we play TACTICS. Cue ball always played off the spot. Red Ball break position half way between 100 and 200 holes. Cue ball must hit a cushion before hitting another ball!!
Best played after a few beers!

I have got two, but my memory is a bit hazy on the correct rules....
Killer. (Unlimited players)
Each player has 6 lives. A pack of cards is shuffled and player picks the first card. If the card is anything from ace through to 10 then the player must play that many consecutive scoring shots (so if you pick a 5 you must play 5 consecutive scoring shots to keep you life). If you get a jack you must put a ball down the 10 hole, if you get a queen you must get a ball down the 100, if you get a king you must get a ball down the 200.
Chase the red.
Scoring is normal but you must hit the red first on every shot. Also the break shot is not the normal break shot but you start with the red behind the 10 hole, and any time the table is cleared you put the red back behind the 10 hole. Think it is normally played off the spot, but guess it doesn't have to be...
