"Blind Pairs" Competition, 4th April

(Extract from Pathfinder's circular to the Redhill League):

Please note that on 4th April we will be holding a blind pairs competition at The Frenches Club. Partners will be drawn from two groups - the better players partnered by a not-quite-so-good-player. Please come and join in the fun.

At tonights committee meeting it was decided that we should ask if anybody has a local charity that we might support - we have some money available for a donation. Please give any committee member your suggestions.

Redhill restored this one to their calendar (after an absence of around five years) for the penultimate event ever to be staged at the Frenches Club, and a great day was enjoyed by all.

The concept is an original one, turn up on the day not knowing in advance who you are going to be partnered with - it may be someone you have never met before ! Partnerships were drawn from two pools, one for seasoned players and one for so-called 'lesser' players.
A maximum break of 3,000 was permitted for the duration of the competition.

After a series of round-robin matches within four Groups, players were divided into either the Main or Plate competition, and here's how it went from that stage onwards................

So there we have it, Richard Wickham (Limes) and tommo the victors over Lorraine (landlady of the Crown) and Laurie Roberts in a tense Final, after Laurie black pegged what would have been a thousand lead to take into the second leg. Instead it was a thousand deficit, which proved to be unassailable once a few balls were left up the table on a difficult top.

Grateful thanks to the Frenches Club staff, to Colin and his team of caterers, to Brian and Tony for the supply of tables, to those who arrived early to set them up, to the table sponsors, to those who kindly donated raffle prizes, and last but not least to Caroline Jones on the Admin Desk ably assisted by master of ceremonies Gary Powell. Oh and to Richard (who has only been playing for three weeks but with the benefit of a crash course from Jason) - well played all day, m8, you are indeed the D's B's. ;D ;D
