:( I visited Phil in hospital today and whilst he was sitting in a chair out of bed, it looks as if he will be in hospital for the rest of this month at least. Having a conversation with Phil was very hard work he has no short term memory at all and it takes a long time for him to express himself, and wanders from the main topic to others and then back. :'( To see my old mate like this was soul destroying, there were glimpses of the Phil I know and love, especially when I mentioned bringing him a pint in next time I visit. I started this thread to keep all who know Phil appraised of the ongoing situation and will update it every time I visit Phil. I hope it doesn't get moved because this is a logical place to put it.

:) 8-) I visited Phil again today in the Churchill Hospital and the difference in him is remarkable, he was still slightly hesitant in his speech but I had a great conversation with him and he told me what he has is a form of meningitis, and he was very lucky that he was taken to hospital very quickly after his collapse and it was the speed at which his treatment started that has seen him progress so well. He will still be in hospital for at least another ten days. Good news. ;D

;D ;D Just a quick update, Phil is out of hospital and on the mend, there are still signes of the illnesses side effects, but I'm sure over a period of time they will lessen. Phil's illness turned out to be encephalitis an inflammation of the brain, and he could have been in dire trouble, as this illness can be very nasty. Personally it's nice to see my old mate up and about. ;D ;D

:( Update on Phil, bad news I'm afraid, Wednesday Phil had some kind of seizure and damaged his face badly and was taken to the JR. I can only hope it is a one off, but it is not a good sign, I will visit Phil at home on Saturday as it is the earliest I can get there as I am a carer and Friday is spent shopping for two families. I will update again on Saturday. :'(

Phil was on good form when I visited him on Saturday and almost seemed his old self, but he has almost no short term memory and he obviously looked terrible after his seizure. Phil may be allowed to come to finals night, but no drinks please, as I will have to drink them all. ;D The seizure may be a one off, as they say it is a normal side effect of this illness, fingers crossed.

I went to a welcome home party at Phil's on Sunday and Phil was on good form and says if all goes well over the next couple of months he will be signing on for the Gladiator Club next winter, all I can say is you can't keep a good man down. He is much improved :) on the last time I met him and I can see there is a possibility he could play in the Winter league. He had a couple of Hobgoblin beers that I took to the party with no ill effects. Phil's condition is much improved :) and I am looking forward to bringing him to finals night, but only for a couple of hours.

:(Thursday 28th June.
I went to see Phil and to be quite honest I was shocked to the core. He was the worst I have ever seen him. He has lost a lot of weight and has regressed to how he was when he was first admitted to the JR. I found it very hard to communicate with him. I'm not completely sure he knew who I was as he shook my hand when I left and mates don't do that. I am finding it very hard to cope with how my old mate is. I was close to tears when I left his house last night. :'(
I'll keep posting here every couple of weeks and hopefully the news will get better.

:'( I got in touch with Phil's family on 24th July in the hope I could take my old friend out for a pint and the news I got is very disturbing. Phil is back in hospital at the J R level six psychiatric assessment unit. He started wailing and having panic attacks a couple of weeks ago, they took him to doc, when he got home he collapsed and was taken to the J R! He's been there for a couple of weeks, things are not looking too good for my old friend. I know it's a long fight to get over encephalitis and I can only hope that Phil starts to get better. I will post again after I've been to see him in hospital.

:-/ I visited Phil in the JR early Thursday evening. He knew who I was and we had a good chatter interrupted by numerous stoppages for Phil to get over spasms of pain in his shoulders and back. He still has no short term memory and he thought it was 7.30 in the morning. The damage to Phil's brain is firing up nerve receptors causing excruciating pain in his shoulders and upper back, it's not very nice to see my old friend in so much pain, all I can hope is that in time the recovery will alleviate this problem. I gave him all your regards and he thanked everyone who had wished him all the best. I told him I had not signed on for a team this year and he said he thought he'd give it a miss as well, (still a sense of humour whilst in so much pain). He also said he would still like to go out to bar billiards on a Thursday and is looking forward to when he has recovered sufficiently enough for an hour or two at a match, (I look forward to that day). I will post here again if there is any vast improvement or heaven forbid, deterioration.
Dick.

:'( I bumped into Phil's missus today at Cowley Center, and she informed me that Phil will not get any better for at least two years, he is still not eating and they still have not put him on a drip to feed him and rehydrate him. The powers that be say he cannot go home as there is not the infrastructure there to be able to look after Phil as he needs constant attention so they are looking for a place for Phil in a nursing home ( here's hoping its a better than the ones you hear so much about in the news. ) I will go and visit him Saturday night to see if I can find out more.
