Latest from Lyn sent last night but only picked up by me 10 minutes ago when I managed to get connected to the hotel wifi in Cesky Krumlov. Good news again!
I'm very pleasd to say that Neil has taken the first step to coming off the Tracky. Today he went on to something called CPOD for 1 hr 15 mins, this is part of the weaning process and means he has to trigger the breath. He did very well and his stats were in an acceptable range. Tomorrow they hope to have him 2 hrs on CPOD then 2 hrs on ventilator then back on the ventilator overnight. Depending how he goes on the next stage is to have no pressure on CPOD machine which means his lungs have to work even harder, after that it's an oxygen mask over the Tracky. All this is going to take several days depending how his stats are but he is desperate to get home so that must help. I'm so glad it's good news for a change.

It sounds as if it's such a long rocky path to recovery and we all wish Neil well again and hope that he makes it.
Thank you BarneyBear for the continued updates.

Latest from lyn - not as good but hopefully 2 steps forward 1 step back
Hi Paul Hope you're having a good time with Nick in Brno. He had a great day on Thursday, I got all excited, by the way it's CPAP not CPOD that something at work! He's had 2 shitty days since and they're going to drain his chest cavity again. He got weighed today was 11 st 7 lbs now 9 st 13 lbs so a bit of catching up to do, they can now work out a new regime for him to start putting on weight in a controlled way. He certainly needs a few extra calories to get some energy! He is looking very tired so might need to turn that corner again. Sorry it's not better news but he's no worse than before you went away.

Latest from Lyn - it's going to be a long haul Sorry it's been a little while since my update but he had a bad couple of days over the weekend but has now re-turned the corner and has now had 2 goods days. He is still on the CPAP, sorry for the miss spelling last time, and has done 5 hours this morning 7 hours this afternoon. He will go back on the ventilator overnight but they hope to have him on the CPAP all day tomorrow. He actually finds it easier than the vent but he mustn't get too tired so they are talking it slowly. The pneumonia is still there so I think that's another reason for not pushing too hard. He has lost another lot of weight and now weighs 58.5 kilos which is 9 st 2 lbs! Can still only have family visiting whist he's in ITU but will let you know as soon as he's on the ward, realistically I think thats at least a couple of weeks of yet. Will try and do another update over the weekend ---------------------------------------------- He is obviously improving as he is now thinking about bar billiards - he was not capable of doing this at all a couple of weeks ago - but he told Lyn today to get me to withdraw from the watney Mann and nobby Clark. I told him that we had roger Taylor as a reserve for the Watney Mann. We might need someone for the nobby Clark though. Please pm me if interested.

Latest from Lyn received thus evening........
Hi everyone, Well here is the next episode in the Neil Saga. He is doing really well being weaned off the ventilator and now only has an oxygen mask over the Tracky so we hope to get it out altogether quite soon. The down side of pneumonia and all the coughing is that it has affected his heart rate to the extent that he is having a pacemaker fitted on Tuesday. We were quite upset about it when it was first mentioned but they did a good job of educating both of us to the benefits and we are now ok with everything. I think it will be at least another couple of weeks before we can think of getting him home but he may well surprise me. Thank you all for your good wishes they are much appreciated. Will try and send the next email a little sooner.

Latest from lyn...........
Neil sat on a chair for 40 mins today despite his chest infection what a star. He's shattered now!
Ian lelliott had a conversation with lyn on Wednesday Morning. His feedback was that he had his pacemaker fitted on tuesday but there was so little tissue where they wanted to place it that they had to put it somewhere else in his chest. Lyn also said that it would be 18-24 months before he was fully recovered.

Have just received an update but not directly from Lyn. It reads
Neil is doing really well reading the paper and listening to the football he even had a go at walking with a frame only 5 steps but it's a start. Medically he still has to have a procedure to decide what to do about his aspiration so will have a camera down. He had another episode when walking which shouldn't happen because of the pacemaker but they don't know why. If all goes well he could be moved to a ward next week.

I have had replies from Neil to a couple of texts that I sent to him - both bar billiard related - and can confirm that he does appear to be in a better frame of mind. The ones he replied to at the start of his llness were very terse and so I stopped texting. He now seems to be thinking more clearly.

I spent about an hour with Neil last night. He is progressing well, but very slowly. He is in exactly the same bed and same ward as he was 3 years ago after his cancer op. (Millennium wing of the Sussex County ward 8A East - he can now take visitors) If he had binoculars he would be able to see golfers playing the 18th at East Brighton.
He still has a trachy in but is able to speak one word at a time between breaths. I was able to understand most of the things he said and only had to ask him to repeat about 6 times in the hour that I was there. He still has 'stuff' in his lungs which he can extract via the trachy and a suction tube (like the dentist has to remove the saliva from your mouth).
He looks fine, but a lot thinner, and he wasn't exactly fat to start with. He is just over 9 stone and was 11 and a half before he had this latest problem. He has however put on a couple of pounds recently so hopefully the weight loss has troughed. As a result of his inactivity over the past 12 weeks he has become pretty much immobile - he can just about get out of the bed and walk with a zimmer round the bed to the other side. This is with a nurse (confidante? - I typed 'nurse' and proboards has translated it - weird) ready to catch him and with Lyn following and carrying a chair in case he can't quite make it. This also is an improvement - getting his legs out of bed and sitting on the edge was an effort until quite recently.
Mentally he seems strong - I only intended to stay for about 15 minutes last night, but I couldn't stop him talking (mostly about bar billiards - so he now knows who won the Sussex and Surrey opens and is following the Olde House's progress in the Nobby Clark (he thinks we can win it!)). I only left in the end because it was chucking out time.
He has a tele and so has been enjoying Wimbledon and I should think will be avidly watching the upcoming open golf.
Visiting hours are 3-5 and 7-8.30 - I'm sure he would like to see some of you for a chat. Parking isn't easy - according to Lyn there is often a long queue to get into the car park. First two hours are £2.40 so it may be better to park outside and walk in.
Note from Sav - 'Nurse' was a censored word ???, have removed it.

Latest from Lyn..................
I am really, really pleased with the progress Neil is making, his walking is certainly coming on, I can't quite say in leaps and bounds, but definite progress in the number of steps with a frame and the they are increasing every day. As you know, if I actually sent the email I intended to send, Neil is in Brighton County Hospital at the moment but a request has been sent to Worthing to accept him back into the Chest ward. We don't know at present whether Worthing will accept him back, his Tracky will be the stumbling block, but we are hopeful. What we don't want to be doing is see sawing between wards in Worthing and Brighton. He is now open to visitors but short sharp visits please as he still gets vey tired, I arrived at 3 o'clock today and he didn't wake up till 4 ! Thank you all so much for all your support and good wishes they are very much appreciated.

I visited Neil again on Monday evening and he is progressing well (except for picking up another infection which they are trying to identify). His walking has improved - end of the ward and back (20 yards) and his speech is back to what everyone would be familiar with before his current illness. Having the tracheotomy removed has done this. I suspect he won't be moved back to Worthing whilst he still has the infection.

A quick update to say that Neil is back in Worthing hospital (last Wednesday he was in Castle ward, but waiting to be moved). If you want to visit it will be best to ask where he is at reception.
Just a case now of getting his strength up - he has regained 1/2 a stone of the 2 1/2 that he lost. No release date yet.
