I have just had a 10 minute conversation with Lyn and she has given me permission to update the bar billiards community with Neil's condition.
He has a severe case of pneumonia and is being given antibiotics. His blood oxygen level is low despite wearing an oxygen mask all the time. He is extremely tired because every time he nods off he coughs and wakes himself up. He did however manage to get about 2 hours kip the night before last. Having had most of the lymph glands in his neck removed when he had his cancer his immune system is not up to the task of fighting the pneumonia by itself - hence the two types of antibiotics, paracetamol, oxygen and fluids that he is being given.
I have been texting him occasionally and he has responded but from his responses I can tell that he not himself and so I will restrict myself to once a day. Lyn has said that she will keep me informed.
Definitely no visitors at present - his sons have only been allowed to see him once since Sunday.

This is so sad to read, Neil has fought the big fight and seemingly won, this setback must be really disheartening for him. Pass on my best wishes to the star of my one and only effort in running a Sussex 'B' team ;D
Get well soon Neil

Better news yesterday in that they have identified the bacteria that is causing the pneumonia and consequently have changed Neil's antibiotic. When that kicks in there should be an improvement.

Texted Neil for a progress report yesterday and it was short but sweet: 'slow but sure'. The day before he was talking about being discharged by the weekend so all sounds good.

Well Neil is still in and hasn't yet got a discharge date. There are still problems with his temperature spiking and his blood pressure. They are due to do a test on Monday morning where Lyn is hoping to have a chat with the consultant.

Neil is definitely in the right place, and hope he is home soon but they cannot take any risks with what has gone before. I can imagine his frustration at a further set back. Thanks to Paul for keeping us up to date.

In fact I have just picked up all the documentation from Lyn so that I can go (he had done all the bookings - flight, Gatwick parking, hotel, competition entries - thankfully NOT car hire). Until I spoke to Lyn yesterday I didn't even know how long we were going for! I shall be Nobby no mates out there 8-)

That is very regrettable, on top of having had to concede various competition ties in Mid Sussex where he had reached an advanced stage.
Sensible not to jeopardise his already fragile health.
Hope he finds some added strength from some quarter, poor fellow.

Latest news on Neil is mixed.
He has picked up a secondary chest infection, but is also according to Lyn 'much brighter and chatting'. He is due some sort of test this morning, but with the new infection it is not certain whether this will go ahead.

Apologies for lack of recent updates.
Early this week Neil was having big problems breathing and so had a tube fitted down his throat which I imagine was a bit tricky given his previous mouth problems. Consequently he was sedated. I have just had a text from lyn and it said this ....... Neil so much better today abw tube may come out tomorrow. Everything crossed .......
So better news.
I have just got back from a fantastic boat trip to Herm with Ian lelliott. Neil would have loved to have done this and let's hope that he can do it next year.

I met Lyn for about 10 minutes at 10 o'clock this morning (Tuesday) and she gave me the full rundown on Neil.
He is in intensive care with someone in full-time attendance. He is conscious. He cannot talk because of the breathing tube down his throat. His hands are swollen and so the only way he can communicate is by spelling out letters on Lyn's hand. The plan at present is to do a tracheotomy when he his fit enough to withstand the procedure (this will not be today a subsequent text from Lyn said). He is seriously ill, but there is still hope that he can pull through. At one stage yesterday he got a bit arsey with Lyn when she couldn't understand him - she sees this as a positive sign.
Someone else who had been speaking to Lyn told me that another patient had been as bad as Neil a few weeks ago and had managed to make it through.

Paul, there is an alternative to Neil trying to spelling out letters on Lyn's hand. When my father had a breathing tube and subsequently a tracheotomy last year we used an arrangement where the alphabet was set out on a grid. The visitor would refer to the rows and columns to pick out each letter. It can take some time to spell out a sentence but it mght be worth suggesting this to Lyn if you get the opportunity.

Cautiously upbeat text message from Lyn today.....
Tracky in and working well although it's making him cough more but thats good. Already wants to know when he can come home!
To which I replied
Excellent. So the more he coughs the more fluid comes up?
And Lyn replied
Thats exactly right they give him regulars Nebulisers to break up the gunk

All the Guernsey lads send their best wishes to Neil, for a speedy recovery. If Paul could pass this on please. I will update all our players at the start of our summer league. We were disappointed that he couldn't make it over this year, but understand due to the circumstances, and look forward to seeing him in Jersey this November. We also hope he can join us over here in Guernsey in 2013.
