Proboards Version 5

We are on version 4.5 and version 5 has just gone into open beta testing. Version 5 is now scheduled for release some time later this year. Version 5 is not just an upgrade, it is a completely new version of Proboards.

When this happens I envisage a troubled period with much work for me in particular. None of the coding which has been added to make this forum unique and tailored to our requirements will be ported to the new version. We will be back to a bog standard bland forum.

All of our posts, logons and PM's will be converted automatically to version 5. We will have no choice but to upgrade. The pool of special features codes that I have cherry picked and adapted for this forum will not initially be available.

I will need time to learn and understand the new version before I can start playing with it. Version 5 is a major advance in forum technology and many of the annoyances such as spacing in posts will disappear. it is a much truer WYSIWYG system, but patience is going to be required by all.

I will update this thread as I receive information from Proboards.

Proboards have announced that forums will start to move to version five at the end of January.

We will not be amongst the first few.

Conversions have now commenced to the new version and this forum is eligible. I do not intend moving for the next couple of weeks, but we will have to sooner or later.

All members will have had the email regarding the new global logons.

Please see here for what the forum will look like straight out of the sausage machine. That is a copy from a few days ago.

Much of the personalisation will be lost, but the forum will basically look the same. All of the fancy codes I have applied, such as excluding quizzes from last posts search, will be lost. It will take time to rebuild but the forum will work. You may have a play on the test copy if you wish, it is not live and will be binned when the official conversion is done. Make sure you are not on the live version!! ;D before making silly posts.

It will give you practice at upgrading accounts.

Apparently Forum owners are to be allowed a temporary opt out on compulsory conversion in April.

I intend to put conversion back until the summer.

My target date is Thursday June 13th which has a quiet couple of weeks following. Thus be warned there may be comms difficulties shortly after.

In three weeks time on Thurs June 13th this forum will convert to the new version.

I have set up a new play area copy of this forum on

barbilliardstest.freemessageboards.com/

Please have a look and try to log in, this is the fiddly part as you will need a new global login (if you are not already on a version five Proboards forum) and then link your barbilliards membership to it.

That is what the new forum will look like and is as close as I can get to the existing forum for now.

I will be looking at the changeover from now on.

The forum has now been converted and I am working through the list of ancillary changes that need to be made.

Not all bells and whistles can be converted, please post comments and requests in the support thread
