So one would imagine. And loads of other stuff to be sorted as with any 'new' Open, such as entry fee, prize money, trophies etc. But at least the date and venue are fixed, and forms will be given out at next month's Kent Classic. Which will leave 10 months for the remainder of the planning, and publicity. Just about right, I reckon. Maybe i am missing something, but where is this competition being played and what date? I presume this has been discussed in the "staff" forum as only the forum staff seem to know as nobody else seems to know!!! Everything anyone knows is in the public domain, Mark. Tony

This is a list of Competition & Table Hire Dates for 2013 May weekend 18-19 - KENT - Six in One Club - Off the Spot Open .... and believe that entry forms will probable be available at this years Kent Open. ;)

Easy to miss I suppose as a little further back in the thread, due to general discussions, but Pete S did post this only 3 days ago :) As Dave has published the date I can confirm that the entry forms will be available at this years Kent Open

.......and I posted the date (highlighted in green) half way down the previous page (why do I bother? ::))
Anyway, just to say, that I would expect that the date would be 19th May 2013 rather than spread over two days, as Dave in his diary tends to group a weekend table hire under just one header.
The Saturday will probably be used by Kent for a domestic competition, such as a 'Masters' or 'Inter-league'.

Probably won't get many (if any) Oxford/Witney players as that looks around the same time our finals nights are! Plus that would mean 3 comps in a matter of weeks with Guernsey, Surrey and now this?

I must say "well done" to Pete Sainsbury for actually going ahead with this competition. It has been sorely missed by a lot of players since the All England Ass. changed it to the Alternative rules Open. Apart from local leagues running their own versions of Off the Spot comps, there is nothing that actually rivals the World Champs & Guernsey tournaments on these shores.
I did say several years ago at an AE AGM that it would be great to revive the NBBA singles comp. but several members said there were too many other tournaments and we`d have trouble to fit another one in. Now with the demise of the Pompey Open, there is a space on the calendar. Surrey have moved their Open into April which means there isn`t 2 major Opens in consecutive weeks ;D
I do like the idea of moving this competition around the country, it can only promote the game, especially if Northants & Cambridge get involved. I feel this should be an AEBBA run event (with help from the area that are hosting it), probably with an entry fee of around £8 per player to cover any costs. As for the perpetual trophy......many of you know my thoughts on that one. The original NBBA trophy, now being wrongly used for the Alt.rules Open, should once again go back to what it was meant for. The Alt. rules should have a new trophy, something gimmicky, as this is a unique competition that is like nothing else. I know just the man to make something original ;)
Keith - We cannot use the title "British Isles Open" as it is still "owned" by Jersey. Do you remember that I also put a questionnaire out a few years ago about an Off the Spot open? And whether any current Opens would consider changing their rules? The response was quite positive about an Off the Spot open but not for changing any current ones, so the interest is out there.
Mark - Three competitions in a matter of weeks has always been there since the Guernsey Open came on the scene so there is no change on that front. With Pompey going, things have just been jiggled around a bit. Pete did approach several people at the Sussex weekend asking for their opinions, so it has been discussed outside the forum.
I for one will welcome this addition to the circuit :)

Mark, The Witney and Oxford Finals are actually either side of the Off-the-Spot competition. They couldn't clash with it as the same set of tables are used, as per Dave Alder's official booking list: May weekend 11-12 - WITNEY - Masons Arms - Finals weekend 18-19 - KENT - Six in One Club - Off the Spot Open weekend 25-26 - OXFORD - Gladiators Club - Finals ....and as KT correctly points out, there has simply been a shuffle of dates: Surrey Open has vacated this slot and moved forward to April - to occupy the currently-vacant Pompey slot. All the Sussex Leagues have their Finals Nights around this time of the year too, but hold them mid-week. It's a lot of billiards to play, but is just accepted as an 'exciting period of intense activity'. :-/

Keith - We cannot use the title "British Isles Open" as it is still "owned" by Jersey. I think that if you are a different organistation you can call it what you like. Like the WBA, WBC, IBF do in boxing, you can call it the AEBBA British Isles open, and, or even, world championships.

Yeah but bar billiards ain't a professional sport, so maybe best not to complicate it. ;) When we debated this before, the options were: - British Off-the-spot Open,
- UK Off-the-spot Open,
- (NBBA) National Off-the-spot Open and
- AEBBA (All-England) Off-the-spot Open.
I think most of us see it as a curtain raiser for, rather than a rival to, the World Championships.

What about Ranking Points ?
I suggest a) it's definitely classed as a ranking event; and b) points awarded are the same as for a normal Open.

If entry exceeds a normal open maybe could be worth more than a normal open, but more than likely would go for the same ranking points as other opens.

Hello All,
I would just say that I will issue entry forms for a National Off the spot Open. I cannot call it an AEBBA event as I am not an officer, however, I would be delighted if it were an AEBBA event and be perfectly happy running it. I will let the AEBBA and others decide what they want to call it.
The idea of moving it around counties is great.
Plenty of time to decide about the perpetual trophy.
See you all in a couple of weeks
