I have edited this post to be the actual rules as agreed by committee for this event.
Rules for Speed Break Competition (2006-7 Finals Night)
1. The winner is the person who scores the most points in one continuous break lasting a maximum of 60 seconds, all normal 'end of break' rules apply.
2. The entry fee collected will be divided 50/50 between the winner (or winners in the event of a tie) and the Mid Sussex Bar Billiards League.
3. The 60 seconds starts when the first ball is struck.
4. Any balls dropping down pockets after the 60 seconds that resulted from a shot played before the time limit will count towards the score, subject to normal playing rules.
5. All other Mid Sussex playing rules apply.
6. Competitors do not have to be members of the MSBBL.
7. The entry fee to be £1 per entry.

I'm more than willing to do my stint if I'm not otherwise engaged but do not wish to spend the whole evening tied to one place & would like to watch some of the finals. Last year was an experimental year & you had as the night went on people came up with all sorts of ways to try & speed things up including having all the white balls out of the tray & on top of the table, I know you have said normal playing rules apply but could be worth a mention. Ian.

OK Ian good points and would hope we could have enough 'trained ;D' officials for it to run smoothly and fairly for all, so we can all see other things.
Interesting as mostly the balls would be in the tray as quite a few can play 60 second stints before the bar drops BUT that brings into play the situation of someone loosing time to pull the bar again, if required, so suggest that the Official anticipates the next Bar drop and pulls before that break or better still the bar is pulled before each break (assumed free table mechanics), if somehow someone is inconvenienced by the Bar dropping then they get another go (free).

Re bar dropping. I made sure there was enough clock time for each break but they thought that if the balls were on top they could save milliseconds by not reaching down to the tray to get the next ball !!!!!! I personally think that it would be more of a hinderance. But it has to be the same for all.

Mmmmm......I tend to agree and that I would find it a hinderance as I'd prefer to stay with a well honed ;D routine and we usually end up waiting for the red to return anyway. Also there would only be 6 whites 'in the baulk' and when they are gone (IF we get that far ;D) we would revert to taking all the balls from the tray anyway.
But I personally would accept that a player could choose to play that method if they wished and I don't see anything against it in the rules either.
I'll leave this one pending anybody else's replies.

I wasn't that some players were using 2 whites and not waiting for the balls to drop, I think that normal BB rules should apply, after all we still use 3 down 1 up, so why should anyone break other rules ??

I have edited the first post, for clarity, to show the rules as agreed by the committee for this event.
It is planned that Table 1 will become free for this event after the Team Plate at about 8.20 pm and will continue till end of proceedings at about 10.40 pm.
Sorry BBR as I know you would have preferred any other table, but tough ;D ;D ;D
