The dust has nearly settled on the season, and it's that time again when we reflect on how things went - in our favour as well as against. Here's a definitive account of my season,, with as usual some lows amongst the highs: (Have allocated star rating on a scale of 0-5 for each event, averaged out for the whole season at the end.)
The wind-down continues to schedule....... July 2012 Kent Classic. Last 32, good 1st round win, narrow Second Rd defeat, 3 good scores. 4 stars. Jun-Aug 2012 Billingshurst Jubilee Team Cup. Entered a fun team from the Mill House, bt 1st Div Blue Ship but lost in Qr-final to SWSC B 3 stars. September 2012 Berkshire Open., Narrow first rd defeat, 10k over 2 legs, then a great run in the Plate, losing to R.Wooton in Semi-Final. 5 stars. Sep ’12 – Apr ’13 SCBBA Home/Away Interleague. 2nd year of 2 back with Horsham. Played half-season only, lost 1st two, but won last two well. The team just missed out on honours but had an absolute ball along the way! 4 stars Jan 2013 Sussex Comps – was due to enter Pairs with SilverFox but it didn’t happen. N/A. Mar 2013 Sussex One-Day Interleague. Did not play N/A.. Mar 2013 1st East Anglian 4-Pin Open @ Norwich. Runner-up in a National Final ! This event was an absolute joy. Made a whole new set of friends. 5 stars. Sep ’12 – May ’13 Horsham League and Team Cup. A great season again, W18 L 5 with only four other players doing better. Qualified for the Masters again along with Tony Franks who joined us and played a full season. Team finished safe and Finalists in Team Cup. Teammate Vicky made Ladies Singles final in only her second season. 5 stars. Feb - May ’13 Horsham Cup Comps – none entered again. N/A May 2013 Guernsey Pairs/Guernsey Open. Margo and I gave it a miss this year: N/A. May 2013 Surrey One-Day Interleague at St Nicholas School, Merstham. Ditto . N/A May 2013 5th Surrey Open at St Nicholas School – my last 3-Pin Open ! Won first Rd with 8k and 6k for 1.3RPs, but soundly thrashed in next round by Mark Trafford after spilling 3k with a peg that came out of the blue. 3 stars. Sep ’12 – May ’13 Billingshurst League and Team Cup. First year in this league for the Mill House: Second Division Champions and won the Best Performance with 20 wins out of 22. 5 stars Feb - May ’13 Billingshurst Cup Competitions. Entered Singles and Mixed Doubles. A good win over the Thayres to reach Semi-Final but then outplayed by Richard (who also beat me in the Singles) and Denise on a difficult table. 2 stars
I make that 36 stars from 9 events, an average of 4 stars per performance. Second year of ‘winding down’ (16 events previous year, 4 events only next season).

The dust has nearly settled on the season, and it's that time again when we reflect on how things went - in our favour as well as against. Here's a definitive account of my season, as full of the usual lows as well as highs: (Have allocated star rating on a scale of 0-5 for each event, averaged out for the whole season at the end.)
July 2013 Kent Classic. It was moved this year to Medway so gave it a miss. N/A Jun-Aug 2013 Billingshurst Jubilee Team Cup. Insufficient interest so no team entered. N/A September 2013 Berkshire Open. Didn’t think I could match last year so missed. N/A Sep ’13 – Apr ’14 SCBBA Home/Away Interleague. Fulfilled my obligations, (I owed Adam one game from last season !) Team now managing fine without me ! N/A Mar 2014 2nd East Anglian 4-Pin Open @ Sudbury. A really fabulous event. Quarter-finalist. 5 stars. April 2014 6th Surrey Open at St Nicholas School. End of the line as well here although enjoyed going along and spectating. N/A May 2014 7th Guernsey Open. Entered Pairs with Sav and made the Semi-Final of the Plate; Last Sixteen in the Singles with £40 prize money, and very close to beating Chris Newson. Some good weather this time, sunbathed on Cobo Bay beach on the Monday morning. 5 stars. Sep ’13 – May ’14 Billingshurst League and Team Cup. The 2nd year in this league for the Mill House, surprise Runners-up in first year in the top division, also won the Team Cup on Finals Night: 5 stars Feb - May ’14 Billingshurst Cup Competitions. None entered. N/A Sep ’13 – May ’14 Horsham League and Team Cup. An enjoyable though challenging season: Team pulled off a minor miracle in avoiding relegation but losing our Team Cup Semi-Final was a major disappointment. Comfortably qualified for the Masters again along with Tony Franks, but failed to perform on the actual day. Early exit in the Mixed Doubles, and only won one round in the Singles (well beaten by Ricky D) but Runners-up in the Pairs with Dave Ingram – have now lost in all four of my Horsham Pairs Finals appearances! 3 stars.
I make that 18 stars from 4 events, an average of 4.5 stars per performance. Third year of ‘winding down’ (4 events, down from 9 events previous year, will probably cut out one night of playing for next season – or maybe have two ‘half-seasons’ before finally calling it a day). Rather conveniently, semi-retirement coincides with the loss of the Mill House as a home venue, one which AFAIC will never be bettered, although the Windmill Gossops Green has proven more than satisfactory as a replacement.

The dust has now settled on the season, and it's that time again when we reflect on how things went - in our favour as well as against. Here's a definitive account of my season, as full of the usual lows as well as highs: (Have allocated star rating on a scale of 0-5 for each event, averaged out for the whole season at the end.)
Sep ’14 – May ’15 Billingshurst League. Emergency reserve only for away matches (Margo being the same for homes) – called upon 5 times winning just twice, as did Margo. n/a Feb 2015 Home/Away and One-Day Interleague: all set to represent Billingshurst A but they were on both occasions unable to raise a side. n/a Sep ’14 – May ’15 Horsham League - no team any more but played once as emergency player for the CC’s; But currently really enjoying being Chairman and a table operator on a casual basis and of course website administrator. n/a
4-pin activity (NB. This doesn’t count for winding down !) Eastbourne mini-Open @ REHC 31/5/2014; Summer 2014 Crawley Summer League inc, Interleague challenge v Eastbourne; Nov 2014 Eastbourne/Hastings v Bay Horse Sudbury friendly @ Ashburnham Arms, Hastings; Mar 2015 3rd East Anglian 4-Pin Open @ Sudbury;. Qr finalist again in East Anglia and willing but casual participant in the rest.
May 2015 8th Guernsey Open. Entered Pairs with Margo and lost by less than 1k over 2 legs in both the Main and the Plate; Same story in the Singles but added a 6800 playout against Tupps to the 5600 break the day before against Diddy and Mat: Unable however to close down the matches. Weather lousy this time, but enjoyed the experience again and the return stay at Hogue du Pommier. 2 stars.)
So 2 stars from 1 event: and on the face of it 4-Pin or Off-the-Spot more likely to tempt me out of the house than the more traditional version! I will say though that I have missed the rigours of league play and quite often gone along anyway just to watch. Having cut down thus far without actually retiring, I will probably keep to one event (or two half events) per year ad infinitum which could even mean a return to playing league matches – especially as our puppy is now a year old……..

By way of a complete contrast I would love to see a full resume of Ros’s achievements for the past 12 months:
If modesty forbids this, I will have a go at compiling them myself – as I did for BB Warrior for the 2011/12 Season.

By way of a complete contrast I would love to see a full resume of Ros’s achievements for the past 12 months: If modesty forbids this, I will have a go at compiling them myself – as I did for BB Warrior for the 2011/12 Season. Ok........Ros Appleby obviously too modest, so here goes !• May 2014 – Semi-finalist, BIOC Ladies Sep 2014 Sussex B 5th/5 in Ladies County (P8 W4.5) Nov 2014 beat BBW in a Worthing League Lewes Cup match Nov 2014 beat B.McCluskey in group stage of World Champs • Jan 2015 Sussex Ladies Singles Runner-up (to Jean Brackenridge) Jan 2015 Sussex Ladies Doubles 4th/5 in round robin (with Kim Hurley) Feb 2015 National Pairs @ Bournemouth – made it to Rd 2 with A F-W Feb 2015 Mid Sussex 4th in One-Day Interleague B Section (P5 W3) Mar 2015 Mid Sussex 3rd in Ladies Interleague (P10 W6) Sep’14-Apr’15 Mid Sussex 3rd/3 in Home/Away Interleague Div 3 (P8 W3.5) Sep’14-Apr’15 Mid Sussex League: Brewbells 5th/7 in Prem Div. Sep’14-Apr’15 Lewes League: Plough Plumpton 6th/9 Sep’14-Apr’15 Horsham League: Dun Horse A 4th/6 in Div.1 Apr 2015 Horsham Mixed Doubles Semi-Finalist (with Paul Jobbins) Apr 2015 Horsham Ladies Singles 3rd/5 in Round Robin Apr 2015 Worthing Ladies Singles Semi-finalist (lost to Sheena Wood) May 2015 Sussex Mixed Doubles Semi-finalist (with Phil Osborne) May 2015 Sussex Team Captains Semi-finalist (lost to BBW) • Sep’14-Arp’15 Worthing League: Smugglers B 1st Div Winners • May 2015 National Mixed Doubles Champion (with Jim Greensted) • May 2015 Horsham Team Plate Winners (Dun Horse) • May 2015 Horsham League Ladies Highest Score winner • Jun 2015 Lewes Mixed Doubles Runner-up (with Phil Osborne) • Jun 2015 Lewes Ladies Singles Champion (beat Jean) • Jun 2015 Mid Sussex Team Cup Winners (Brewbells) • Jun 2015 Mid Sussex Open Doubles Champion (with Neil Higgins) • Jun 2015 Mid Sussex Doubles Champion (with Andy Farmer-Wright) • Jun 2015 Mid Sussex Ladies Singles Champion (beat Lorraine) Jun 2015 Reserve slot awarded in Sussex Masters I make that a “Dirty Dozen” – though I wouldn’t be surprised if a Baker’s Dozen isn’t subsequently claimed ! NB. Opens need adding to obtain a full picture, but these are difficult for an outsider to assess with AEBBA website currently down.

Nov 2014 beat BBW in a Worthing League match Just for the record.... it was a LEWES Cup game, not a Worthing League game. And she played very well and thoroughly deserved her win that night! Well done Ros on a great season.

As a means of bumping this thread in which players are invited to list the experiences - good and/or bad - of the previous season, here is my hitherto unposted recollection of 2015/16 when I was making half-hearted attempts to retire from the game ! (As usual. a star rating on a scale of 0-5 for each event, averaged out for the whole season at the end.)

2016/17 Aug 2016 – 16th Bucks – 3rd round lost to Phil Osborne by a mere 400 pts. 3 stars Aug 2016 – 1st Northants 4-pin….good Qr final win over Phil Osborne but lost in Semi to Jason Neal. In 6th 3-pin Open, made the 4th Rd but lost to Mark Trafford 3 stars Aug 2016 No Crawley Summer 4-Pin League but played in Interleague challenge Eastbourne v Mid Sussex Aug 2016 Re-introduced the King & Barnes Open Doubles, having attained a sponsorship award in Oct 2015 from Hall and Woodhouse (Dorset brewery) which we shared with the Billingshurst League. Oct 2016 – National Off-the-spot Open @ Salfords - good 1st rd win over S.Carruthers before being trounced again by Curt Driver this time by 23k. 1 star Sep ’16 – May ’17 Mid Sussex League - Sadly Alan Downs suddenly passed on in July 2016 which coincided with plans for a move from B’hurst to Mid Sussex. SilverFox joined us, a worthy replacement. Runners-up in the League and won the Team Plate. Lost in 1st Rd of Mixed and did not qualify for later stages of Charity League or Masters 4 stars Sep ’16 – May ’17 Horsham League - Windmill GG Div 1 runners-up; unfortunately lost Team Cup semi-final due to me not making it back from Guernsey in time. Missed out on Charity Cup Semis and lost in Semi-final of Mixed, but won the Mens Singles- previous win being 21 years ago. Unable to take part in Masters as it clashed with Northants Open weekend. 5 stars Mar 2017 5th E Anglian Open -reached 3rd round but lost to Stephen Coleman 2 stars Apr 2017 7th Guernsey Pairs - entered with Margo, rapid exit in both Main and Plate but opponents Martin Cole and Jim Millward were gracious in victory. 0 stars Apr 2017 10th Guernsey Open – 1st Rd last ball win over Luke Oliver, but nightmare 2nd Rd versus Silent. 1 star May 2017 2nd Nthnts (AEBBA) 4 pin - missed out in group of death (which included Senior and Osborne) and in Plate lost in Qr Final to Damo. 1 star May 2017 7th Nthnts 3 pin Open - comprehensive 1st round defeat by Nigel but actually won the Plate- helped by a PB 10k break in the Semi. 5 stars So like a rubber ball I came bouncing back to the game! In an up-and-down season, 25 stars from 10 events: a fitting average of 2.5 stars. 2017/18 Sep ’17 – May ’18 Mid Sussex League. Premier League Champions by ….pts ! Runners-up in Charity League and lost S/Final of Team Cup. Early exit in Singles, losing semifinalist with Jim in the Pairs. Runner-up in the Masters but a cherished 5th Mixed Doubles title win with Margo, 36 years after being the very first winners in the year of our marriage. 5 stars Sep ’17 – May ’18 Horsham League - Windmill GG Div.One runners-up and Team Cup winners. Lost in 1st Rd of Singles and Doubles and K & B Doubles but runners-up in Mixed Doubles. Had traded Chair for Comps Sec and compiled a souvenir programme for Masters in its 30th year. 3rd in group for Charity Cup and Masters. 5 stars Aug 2017 17th Bucks Open – bit of a disaster this one, Lorraine overturned a 3k deficit plus against break in 2nd leg to beat me in Main. Then wasn’t in the races against Big TJ in the Plate. 1 star Feb 2018 – Reluctantly answered SOS to play for Horsham in the 1-Day Interleague and ruined my proud break-even record over the years, winning just one frame out of eight. 0 star March 2018 - 6th East Anglian – won group stage but lost in 2nd rd to Casey Parker. 2 stars April 2018 - 10th Surrey Open (Surrey having lost the AEBBA Off-the-Spot) 1st rd defeat by Dave Ingram (like to think I gave him a good game) but good run in the Plate losing to the mighty Geoff Jukes in the Semi-final. 4 stars May 2018 3rd Nthnts (AEBBA) 4 pin - Runner-up in Group one, then lost to Sav in the Last 16, matching him shot for shot but his 50/50 break v my 50/10 break being decisive. 3 stars May 2018 8th Nthnts 3 pin Open - Rapid exit in both Main and Plate. Bad day at the office. 0 stars
So 20 stars from 8 events – matching last season Ave: 2.5 stars

2018/19
Sep ’18 – May ’19 Mid Sussex League. In contention in Premier but faded badly, losing the last match 0-5 at home which knocked us down to 4th. I had scored a PB of 13900 earlier in the season and made the semi-final of the Masters. We lost our Team Cup semi, did not qualify for the later stages of Charity, and conceded the Mixed over arrangement difficulties. 4 stars
Sep ’18 – May ’19 Redhill League - Had planned to give up one night a week like my Horsham league teammates but a chance encounter in a Redhill pub with some former colleagues saw me join the Old Oak team 3 games in. We finished mid-table, and lost in qr final of Presidents Cup and s/final of the Burwood Cup. 2 stars
Mar 2019 - 7th East Anglian – runner-up in Group stage and made the 3rd round before losing to an inspired Jim Balchin. 3 stars
Apr 2019 - Was entered for 11th Surrey Open but dropped out when Margo wrote her car off. However I attended the Charity event (Inter-League) the next day and was part of the victorious A league representative side winning all my games as did Curt Driver for the Chairman’s team. 5 stars
So 14 stars from 4 events, Ave 3.5 stars
2019/20 Aborted season - plus the 2020/21 Cancelled season
Sep ’19 – Mar ’20 Mid Sussex League. Joint top of table when league suspended, and spared the concluding matches which would have more than likely have knocked us down to at least fourth ! Great run in the Team Cup, knocking out two strong teams to reach Semis (never played) and Charity League was abandoned after 2 rounds. Entered a Seniors Comp for the first time ever and won the only match played – a 2-leg Prelim – but abandoned along with the rest. 5 stars Sep ’19 – Mar ’20 Redhill League - Old Oak finished half way up again but this time relegated. Early exit in both the Cups. 1 star Sep ’19 – Mar ’20 Horsham League - 2 guest appearances: team also finished half way. In Semi-finals of Over 50s and Mixed Doubles but all competitions abandoned. 3 stars
4-pin activity Sep 2019 – “National 4 x 4” (= Teams of four playing four-pin) held at White Horse, Sudbury. Entered team from Surrey with Joe Elleson, Jim Balchin and John Slee and team finished 5th out of 12. 4 stars And I drew up fixtures for a 4-Pin League to be run Oct to Dec 2020 but this had to be shelved due to a second phase of “Lockdown”.
Mar 2020 12th Surrey Open – had entered but was cancelled as Covid kicked in. This also put paid to Guernsey 2020 (entered) & 2021 and E Anglia 2020 (entered) & 2021. Went to Sudbury anyway for organised friendly play on the Saturday when the 1st World 4–Pin would have taken place.
9 stars from 3 events = Average 3 stars.
So having tried to give up the game 6 years ago, what happened ? Deaths in the team reminded me of my own mortality, and as they say, life’s too short: I’m like a rudderless ship, drifting “wherever life may take me”. In 2021/22 new adventures beckon with a move from Mid Sussex back to Billingshurst – albeit without one of our mainstays Barry Timson – a recent victim of cancer. And I would like to think I have one last Guernsey and/or Jersey visit to come.

The dust has now settled on the season, and it's that time again when we invite you to reflect on how things went - in our favour as well as against. Here's a definitive account of my season, lows as well as highs: (Have allocated star rating on a scale of 0-5 for each event, averaged out for the whole season at the end.)
Sep ‘21 - Apr ‘22: Redhill league. Played another full season for the Old Oak team. Again we finished mid-table, and disappointingly lost close matches in first round of Burwood Cup and in the semi-final of Presidents Cup. However had a great season personally, unbeaten into February before losing 3 towards the end, having already secured ‘B’ League Player of the Year. 5 stars Oct ’21 – May ’22: Billingshurst League. Could hardly have gone better, our team having switched leagues from Mid Sussex. Did the League and Team Cup double plus I won Best Performance award with 16 wins out of 17 and a 6236 average. Sadly the Individual competitions were not run, but the League was won by 8 clear points from the previous champions, and we won the Team Cup final with a whitewash. 5 stars Nov ’21 – Mar ’22: Horsham League. Just called on for three appearances as the emergency player, won the vital game that secured the league championship for the Windmill by 1pt. 5 stars Feb 2022 – Played for Horsham in the SCBBA 1-Day Interleague, had my moments but won only two frames from eight, yet it was enjoyable and we were playing in the top division 2 stars Mar 2022 - Kent Open - My first Kent entered for ten years: Thrashed in First Round by Jason Neal but had one good win in the Plate before losing the next round on aggregate over 2 legs. 2 stars Mar 2022 - East Anglian 4-Pin - missed out on the Inaugural World 4-pin at Sudbury due to own Ruby Wedding celebration N/A Apr 2022 - Redhill 1-Day Inter-League - was part of the B league representative side which finished third. Lost a vital game through handicap difference but had good scores in wins over Tony Cross and Denise Wills. 4 stars Apr 2022 - Surrey Open - Quarter-finalist including a good win over Alan Brackenridge but lost to eventual winner Alan Donovan. 5 stars Jun 2022 - National Off-the-Spot Open - bottom in Group with one win out of four, but runner-up in the Plate, having played 11 frames on the day. 4 stars So 32 stars from 8 events, an average of 4 stars which must rate as one of my best seasons ever.
