This is prompted by Q's latest ambition to be registered to play for the record number of different Leagues in the same season: Five and counting.
That's all very well, but who has tried to squeeze games for two separate leagues into the one evening ?
I did a bit of that myself in the late 1970's but wouldn't dream of attempting it now.

Sometimes play pool aswell. Is that at the same venue or do you have to travel? Next week I will play 'at home' 20 miles away for The Albion in Brighton, and then travel to an away match at St Francis Social Club in Haywards Heath, a distance of nearly 20 miles. I can then go home 16 miles. Needless to say I wont be drinking that night.

The most recent person I can think of to attempt this was Gareth Lloyd, who played for us one night when we were short. He stuck about 15k past Charlady at the Wheatsheaf and then b*ggered off almost immediately to play in the Brighton League.
I can remember some animosity caused once by Gerry McCarthy (now emigree back to Eire): he played a game in the Crawley League and knocked up a 13k break at the Plough Smallfield. Then he was off to play in the Horsham League in the same evening. It was the only game he played in Crawley that season - apart from entering the cup competitions - and on finals Night he went home with the Highest Break and Highest Score Cups as well as the Mens Individuals trophy. Words were said !

The one occasion that really sticks in my mind is when - it must have been around the year 1978 - I had to play two away games twenty miles apart. I was allowed to go on first (for the Railway Billingshurst) at the White Hart Cranleigh and then had to make it back to play for the Brewery Shades Crawley at the Charcoal Burner. Cranleigh is 20 miles from Crawley if you stick to the main roads going via Horsham (but the bypass hadn't been built at that time). I decided to try to cut off five miles by travelling "as the crow flies" which took me through twisty and turny country lanes via Ockley and Rusper. I was really pushing it and nearly landed in a ditch several times. I made it back to the Charcoal Burner by about ten to ten and was greeted on the doorstep of the pub by an exceedingly irate John Turner: "You've only just saved your bacon !" he yelled at me. "The bar has just gone in Tony -------'s game, he's played like a c*** and we stand at 2-all. One more minute and we'd have had to give your game away. Now get on there !!!" Well I had to go on all in a fluster, jet-lagged, no time even to get a drink, but somehow I managed to win. But it sure taught me a lesson, one I'm particularly careful not to repeat.

I believe that, many years ago, the Brighton league had a rule which forbade it's members from playing in another league with the same match night (i.e. Wednesday).
This was a time when the adjacent Portslade league also played on Wednesday nights, and presumably there was competition for players between the two.
I played in the Portslade league until it's demise, the remaining few teams (including mine) then joined the Brighton league (this would be either 1985 or 1986).
Are there any other forum members who were around at that time, who can confirm or refute the accuracy of my recollection?
By the way, if the rule did exist, I'm sure it's been long-since repealed, things were quite a bit different in those days!

I am hoping noone will attempt to complain as my dad has had only 4 players all season and it is in the leagues interest as well as my dads team that Bernie can play for the Albion this season. I will try and get the rule removed for next season.

Thought I'd bump this thread.
My, how times change......................
There are several players I know of who play four nights a week (eg Lewes, Horsham, Mid-Sussex, Worthing in that order) and often have to 'double up' by playing a competition match followed by League or Interleague in the same evening.
Of course, the 'ultimate' was BB Warrior last year, who played in EIGHT leagues (Mid-Sussex, Lewes, Brighton, Worthing, Littlehampton, West-Sussex, Horsham and Redhill). :o
Billingshurst, Eastbourne and Hastings must be wondering what they had done wrong. ;)
